Buying your first pair of skis is exciting… but a lot of people end up on gear that actually makes skiing harder to learn.
Here are 5 super common mistakes we see every winter 👇
1. Buying skis that are too advanced
A lot of beginners buy stiff, aggressive skis because they think they’ll grow into them.
The problem is that advanced skis are usually less forgiving and harder to turn at slower speeds. For most people starting out, a beginner/intermediate ski will help you improve faster and enjoy skiing more.
2. Choosing skis based only on graphics or brand
Some skis look amazing, but the nicest-looking ski in the shop might be completely wrong for your height, weight, ability level, or skiing style.
Different skis are designed for completely different types of skiing. The best ski is the one that suits the skier using it.
3. Buying skis that are the wrong length
Some beginners buy skis that are too short because they feel less intimidating. Others go too long because they think bigger automatically means better.
The right ski length depends on your height, weight, confidence level, and skiing style.
4. Spending all the money on skis and ignoring boots
Good ski boots matter more than most beginners realise.
A properly fitted boot improves comfort, warmth, and control.
Most beginners buy boots that are too big because they feel more comfortable in the shop, but ski boots should actually feel snug with minimal heel movement.
5. Not considering second-hand gear
A lot of people assume they need to buy a completely brand new setup straight away.
In reality, quality second-hand skis are often the smarter option, especially when you’re still figuring out what type of skiing you enjoy and what gear suits you best.
A good second-hand setup can save hundreds of dollars while still performing incredibly well on snow.
That’s a big part of why Sports Circle exists.
We stock second-hand gear that still makes sense for real skiers, whether you’re completely new to the sport or skiing every winter and looking for good value equipment.
