"We're helping them along the way in the journey to get more women into the outdoors."

Gemma McCaw and Jess Baker started Ladies Who Venture to close a real gap - women who wanted to hike but lacked the skills or confidence to do it themselves. The goal was never to keep them coming back on guided trips. It's to give them the tools to keep venturing in the outdoors long after the trip is over.

But it's not just about the skills, it's about the people you meet along the way. Many of the women on this trip started as strangers and left as friends, with a new crew to keep exploring with.

We were fortunate to join them on a hike to the Pinnacles Hut.

We packed our bags, laced up our boots, and joined Ladies Who Venture and a crew of 24 women from all corners of New Zealand, for an overnight adventure into the Coromandel ranges.

Three hours of climbing through native bush, a bit of hands-and-feet scrambling over rock, and the reward was worth every step: Pinnacles Hut, framed by the peaks the trail is named for.
