Upper Clutha Junior Rugby recently had the opportunity to take part in the 2026 Forsyth Barr Stadium Year 8 Rugby Experience in Dunedin. The club took a squad of Year 8 players down to face local Dunedin side Kaikorai in what was an unforgettable day for everyone involved.
The combined Upper Clutha Year 8 team truly got to experience life as a Highlander for the day โ entering Forsyth Barr Stadium through the playersโ entrance, using the โHomeโ changing room, and warming up in the indoor training facility before taking the field.
Running out onto the stadium pitch alongside a much bigger Kaikorai team could have been intimidating, but while we may have lacked size, we certainly made up for it with heart and determination. From the opening kick-off, one of our smallest players put in a huge tackle on one of their biggest players, setting the tone for the entire game.
Throughout the match, every player contributed, whether on attack or defence. From the forwards to the backs, the whole team stood strong and gave it everything.
It was a fantastic experience for players, and parents alike, and one that will be remembered for a long time.
Our coaches - Rob Norman, Paul Mavor, Randall Aspinall, Issac Davidson and Ben Goodwin were all exceptional in their roles and the players and parents are all very grateful to have highly experienced, committed and dedicated coaches.
A huge thank you to Otago Rugby for organising opportunities and experiences like this for our young players.
