Last winter we had really exciting races and wonderful week with biathlon family. Lets meet again in Kontiolahti, Finland 16.-22.3.2026.

Biathlon New Zealand has been invited to send a group of young athletes to the IBU IOC Camp to be held in Goms, Switzerland in December 2025.

The camp is for young biathletes (aged 15–21) who have reached a competent level of biathlon and shown commitment to the sport. New Zealand can send up to 4 athletes (2 male, 2 female) and 1 coach.

If you are interested in this camp please let WBC Head Coach - Jason Sklenar know by no later than 15 August.

Last weekend Waiorau Nordic Sports Club NZ and Wanaka Biathlon Club ran a fantastic camp for youth. This has become one of the highlights of the season - if you or your child are keen, come along next year - you'd love it!

Start of the Season
It was great to see so many of our club out at the range this past Sunday. Overall we had 23 total biathletes working with our 3 coaches + our volunteers throughout the day.

This Sunday, July 20th, marks the Second Sunday Coaching Session of the season. We will split into two groups but flip the order:

Group 1 will include the Masters/Novice Adult and younger Youth Development (year 8 and younger) biathletes from 1000-1200 with setup from 0930.

Group 2 will include the Team Snow Farm, older Youth Development (year 9 and older) and self-training biathletes with shooting + skiing sessions from 1230-230 pm with setup from 1200.

This weekend also includes The Nordic Development Camp.

Opening Weekend?
While Snow Farm is clearly not opening today, the forecast looks very promising for tonight and tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed!

To that end we are postponing the Working Bee to Sunday at 10am. If you’re able, please come to the range and give us a hand setting up for the season. Time and weather permitting we will have an Open Range afterward.

Calling all Wanaka Biathlon Club members. Do you want to compete in Australia this winter? Biathlon Australia have contacted the club and asked for interest in the Australian National Championships to be held at Whisky Flat, Mount Hotham Victoria on the 19 and 20th of July this year. The idea is to run a Trans Tasman competition which will feature races in both countries.

If you are interested, Biathlon Australia are offering to help with billeted accommodation and Biathlon New Zealand will help with transport costs.

Given the great start to the Victorian winter, and these offers of help, this could be the ideal year to head over. This could be the start of a rekindled Trans Tasman biathlon series!

On Saturday 14 June we are hosting a pop-up Laser Biathlon Challenge at the Wānaka Recreation Centre from 9:30-11:30am.

The format will be a timed 200m run, laser shoot, 200m run, laser shoot, and a final 200m run.

If you or your child is interested in biathlon, this is a great opportunity to give it a try and meet the coaches prior to the season start.

See you at the Rec Centre!

The countdown is on! Snow Farm have announced their opening day as 27 June! In the lead up to opening day we have the following activities planned.

On Saturday 14 June we are hosting a pop-up Laser Biathlon Challenge at the Wānaka Recreation Centre from 9:30-11:30am.

Are you under 19 and keen to try biathlon? Whether you're in primary or secondary school, if you love skiing and want to level up your skills, this program is for you! ⛷️🎯

👉 Learn the fundamentals of junior biathlon:

Skate skiing technique

Laser rifle shooting

Progressing to .22 shooting (under close supervision)

By the end of the season, you'll be aiming for:
🏅 Snow Farm Academy Bronze (XC skiing)
🏅 Biathlon NZ Bronze (biathlon)

No shooting experience needed – just a bit of cross-country or alpine skiing background, plus fitness and enthusiasm!

🗓️ 6 coaching sessions at the WBC range
📍 Sundays from 13 July – 23 August 2025
➕ Optional Wednesday sessions (2–4pm)
🎯 Includes entry into the WBC Champs & BNZ Nationals
