No stars. No sky. Still somehow feels like another world

Deep beneath Waitomo, the ceiling lights up with thousands of glowworms while you make your way through the cave with nothing but a tube, a wetsuit and a very good story waiting at the end.

Excitement: 0 to 100. Altitude: 0 to -35.

showed us how it's done, abseiling 35 metres into the darkness of Ruakuri Cave, then launching on a zip line through a galaxy of glow worms.

After some well-deserved and welcomed snacks and a warm pick-me-up drink, it was back to plunging into the underground waters, scrambling over rocks, climbing waterfalls, and powering through flowing currents.

Some adventures ask you to step outside your comfort zone. Ours asks you to squeeze through it.

Before you even enter the cave, you'll suit up, meet your guide, and practise your best jump with your tube (trust us, it'll come in handy). Then it's time to step into an underground world where you'll crawl through ancient cave passages, splash into waterfalls, float beneath thousands of glowworms, and discover why this is one of New Zealand's most legendary adventures.

It's muddy. It's wet. It's unforgettable.

At Legendary Black Water Rafting Co, smiling isn't optional.

We've tried everything. Serious faces. Tough guy poses. Looking mysterious for the camera.

It never works.

Something about floating through ancient caves, jumping into underground rivers and drifting beneath thousands of glowworms seems to make people forget they're supposed to be cool.

Case in point: . Those pearly whites were on full display, and we don't blame you.
