Last long/hard training hike for the boys (and dad) yesterday. Packs at full weight (hopefully a little lighter on our trip) so much hard work was done on our 15.5k, 6hr walk in the hills with a literal 4 thousand box steps. Karamatura-K Forks-Mt Donald McLean-Puriri Ridge-Omanawanui Trig then return. Additional weight in packs (re food and sundry items not needed yet) provided by 7 books, a board game, a nerf gun and an honest to God piece of firewood! Pack weights yesterday were 17kgs, 9kgs, 7.5kgs and 4.5kgs although dad may have unburdened Silas (8) of a kg or so for the return section. Well-earned thick shakes at Scenic dairy and Hell pizza for dinner.

Only 4 weeks till these young lads commence a mission of epic proportions. Training has done its job - comfortably smashed out an old favourite in record time today, with full weight packs (except for dad, who, try as he might, can't seem to keep up with them 😅).

Took the boys out for an easy 8km hike with packs at 80% weight. Final few weeks of training before their epic mission.

Great day for a hike today! Loaded up packs at half/⅔ weight and hit the hills. Omanawanui, firm favourite for views and elevation, 4hrs and some 18k steps (2420 actual boxed steps - each way!). Hats off to Cass, Lincoln and 5yr old Phoebe who joined us today. Good effort! 💪🙏😎

Nice 4.5hr hike today with light packs. Beautiful day for it with final 45mins in the moonlight. We couldn't fight it.
