🎉 Official Re‑Opening of the Waitakere Hockey Turf 🎉

On Saturday, we proudly celebrated the official re‑opening of the Waitakere Hockey Turf following the resurfacing project completed over summer! The day kicked off with a special ceremony and ribbon cutting to mark this exciting milestone. A huge thank you to our speakers who joined us for the occasion, David George (Waitakere Regional Hockey Turf Trust Chair), Philippa Durkin (Henderson High School Principal), Hamish Milne (Waitakere Hockey Club President) and Shane Henderson - Councillor for Waitākere.

Following the ceremony, we hosted the first official match on the new turf: an invitational game featuring Waitakere Regional Hockey Turf Trust vs. Waitakere Hockey Club. Some of the club’s top talent took on the turf trust board members, supported by invited players to round out the squad. The club team narrowly came away with the win, with the game ending in a 1-0 score. A fun, competitive way to break in the new surface, thank you to all that took part!

Finally, an enormous thank you to our project sponsors Auckland Council, New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), and the Bobby Foundation. This upgrade simply would not have been possible without your generous backing.

🌟 TURF RESURFACE COMPLETE! 🌟
We’re excited to kick off 2026 with a brand new playing surface at Waitakere Hockey!
The project was completed just before Christmas, and we can’t wait for our community to get back out there to test out the new surface.

🔍 The Specs 🔍
We’ve installed a 24mm Ecocept underlay, giving water far more room to drain before it reaches the surface. That means better drainage, fewer puddles, and far fewer rained‑off games, all while maintaining top‑level performance.

On top of that, we’ve now got a brand new WETT Pro surface from Tiger Turf — a world‑class, high‑performance hockey turf designed for excellent speed, consistency, and player experience.

♻️ Sustainability Spotlight ♻️
Our new Ecocept underlay not only performs well — it’s also great for the environment, being made from 90% recycled materials. A standard hockey turf underlay reuses approximately 5,000 used car tyres and eight million plastic bags!

We’re also proud that all of the previous underlay was repurposed, and nearly all of the old carpet was collected by members of the community and community groups for reuse. It’s awesome to see the old turf beginning a second life across the community. Feel free to share photos of how you’ve reused the old turf below! ⬇️

🚧 Turf Resurfacing Update 🚧

The Waitakere Hockey turf resurfacing is officially underway! A huge THANK YOU to all the amazing volunteers who worked tirelessly in the heat over Monday and Tuesday to get all the turf rolled up ready to be taken away!

Want some turf for at home practice areas or DIY projects?
We have turf available for collection from the car park off Smythe Road:
✅ **Tonight:** 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
✅ **Tomorrow:** 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Important details:
- No holds – first come, first served
- Bring strong helpers to load it into your car/ute/trailer (it’s heavy, especially now that it’s wet!)
‐ It is cut in all different sizes so bring a tape measure if you need any specific lengths/widths

➡️ Anything left after Friday will be offered to the wider community, so grab yours while you can!

🚨 Turf Resurfacing – Volunteers Needed! 🚨
You may have already heard... the Waitakere Hockey Turf is being resurfaced by the team at Tiger Turf! This is a huge moment for our hockey community, and we’re so excited to get it all under way this coming Monday.
To get things started, we’re looking for volunteers to help us roll up the old turf. It’s part of the uplift process and a great way to be involved in this exciting upgrade. While the work is physical, you don’t need to be a bodybuilder—just reasonably fit and ready to lend a hand!

📅 Volunteer Days:
Monday 17th November
Tuesday 18th November

🕘 Time:
9:00am to around 4:00pm each day

🍽️ Lunch will be provided for all volunteers
You’ll also get first pick of the old turf – perfect for an at home practice area, garages or sheds.

⚠️ Important: This is an active work site, so no small children are allowed on site during the uplift. Volunteers also need to be 16 years or older.

Over the summer break we have been working hard to get new floodlights installed, this project was finally completed last week. The old lights have been swapped out with new LED's, these new lights are far better for the environment using less power and also much more reliable.

The Waitakere Regional Hockey Turf Trust would like to say a massive thank you to Grassroots Trust who provided us with the funding to allow this project to go ahead.

These new lights are going to future proof the facility and ensure we can provide a great venue for College Sport, Club games and trainings to go ahead.

The pavilion build is coming along very nicely! Here a few little sneak peaks into the building itself.

Exciting times ahead as we have begun work on constructing the pavilion at the turf! Temporary fencing has gone up (please see image below) which runs along the grass. There is one access point to the turf which is behind the shed which can be accessed via parking on Smythe road and the main entrance to the turf by the gym is still available. Be aware that the turf is an active construction zone and there will be heavy machinery and materials around. Players, spectators and officials can access the dugout side of the turf by walking across the turf (when no one is on the turf) or accessing the turf via the second gate located behind the shed.

WE ARE BACK!!!!!

Today is the day that the turf is re-opening and we are just as excited as you are.

Here are few things to be aware of when coming to the turf:
- Please use the designated ENTRY and EXIT points. There are seperate for Turf 1 Entry and Turf 2 Entry as well.
- Please Sanitise on your way in and on your way out. There are sanitisation stations upon entry and also just before you go onto turf 1 or turf 2, same as when you exit.
- Please let your coach know ASAP if you are not attending training.
- There is no access to the dugouts.
-Toilets are open, one person waiting only.
- Only used designated gates.
- Stay on your portion of the turf.
- Stay home if you feel unwell.
