Tutemohuta Waka Ama Tutemohuta Waka Ama is a hapū-based waka ama club established by Ngāti Tutemohuta.

Our goal is to strengthen our hauora, our whakapapa connections, and our relationship with the taiao through the traditions of our tūpuna.

Beautiful hoe on the moana with the whānau this morning. Koro Tauhara looking splendid and we got to hear some kōrero from Mihi Blake’s mum telling us about stories she heard from her mother-in-law about how our tūpuna used to bring watermelon and cherries over here on waka from the other side of the lake for the whānau back in the day. Awesome to hear stories like these. 💚🤍🖤

And a big mihi to John Andrews for coming to mow the lawns at the taunga waka - much appreciated e te whanaunga. 💚🤍🖤

Also just a heads up - we had to drive down past the marae this morning to get to the waka because there’s a big tree that must have come down in the wind the other day and it’s blocking the road to take the back way down to the waka taunga. Turi will be up again in a couple of days so we’ll look to get it cleared when he gets up here. But just a reminder for our whānau that we need to be taking this back road to get to the waka rather than driving down past the marae to get there.

Enjoy the day whānau. 💚🤍🖤

Ngā mihi o Hineraumati ki a koutou katoa!

Now the beautiful weather is here, anyone keen to go for a paddle at 9.00am tmrw (Tuesday 6th Jan)? Let’s see if we can get two crews out. We’ll look to be back in by 11.00am. Please comment below if you are keen so we can make sure we get the waka filled. If we have more than 12 we’ll try and make a second session.

Five seats already taken (just coz these whanau have been asking to get out on the water):
Pilar Tahau
Mihi Blake
Gresha Wall
Tairoki Tahau-Hodges
Ngatuire Hapi
Pania Tahau-Hodges

So seven more seats to fill.

And just a heads up, we’re working on our calendar now and hope to have that up in the next couple of days to share when we’ll be out on the water.

Come and enjoy our beautiful waka, whānau. 💚🤍🖤

Kia Ora whanau.
Our waka Matarangi had some defects when it was delivered. Our waka builder said he would give us a replacement ready in December. He contacted me a short time ago to say he was in Tauranga enroute to drop off our new replacement. It will be here this evening. He will have to get to Koropūpū from the side gate, the backroad is too narrow for the trailer to get through.
Arohamai for any inconvenience. The exchange will take a few minutes.

Kia ora whānau. Unfortunately the wind has picked up and it’s white capping out on the water now, so we’ve had to bring our waka in for the day earlier than we’d hoped. Safety is our priority, so sometimes we have to make the hard calls to keep our whānau safe. We did manage to get out for a bit, and awesome to see Pip out on the water with her tamariki - and sorry to our whānau who arrived just as we were bringing the waka in. But just shows how fast the conditions can change on the lake. All good learning though whānau - we’re learning about the conditions here too, learning the signs to look for, just like our tūpuna would’ve back in the day. And I know a lot of our whānau already know how to read the signs that tell us what the winds and water are doing, so looking forward to learning from you all too. It’s all part of our journey together. But here’s a bit of a snippet of our whānau out on the water before the conditions turned. Kia pai te rangi ki a koutou whānau 💚🤍🖤

WHĀNAU DAY, THIS SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2025

E ngā uri o Tutemohuta, nau mai, haere mai! We're ready for our next whānau day!

10.00am-1.30pm at our taunga waka at Koropūpū, just along from the marae. Please take the back road down to Koropūpū, instead of driving down past the marae. Lifejackets and paddles provided.

We welcome all newcomers and experienced paddlers of all ages. It doesn't matter what your level of fitness is - this is all about giving it a go and having fun!

Don't forget your sunblock, a pōtae, swimming togs, water, and a snack in case you get hungry!

We'll look to get our babies out on the water first at 10.00am, but will need some whānau in the waka with us to help take them out. Other than that, we'll be just rolling with whoever is there.
If the weather is cake, we'll post up by 8.00am on the day to let you know if there is a change of plan.

Nau mai, haere mai, eke mai!

Mean paddle this morning with the whānau! A nice gentle 6km paddle into Rotongaio and then down to the point before heading back to Koropūpū. And we’re starting to build up our skills base, whānau - Jase all trained up to call in the waka and our beautiful niece Shilo sharpening up her steering skills with Papa Turi. Cuzzie Papuni bringin the power, and beautiful Maria keeping the timing for the crew in seat 2 - awesome. Loved it! Thank you Aunty Horiana for coming down this morning before Church, and to cuzzy Janice, Aunty Josie and Miss Snowy Rose and Miss Aho for bringing us some snicker-snackers for when we came off the water - love and appreciate yous. 💚🤍🖤

MINUTES FROM YESTERDAY’S CLUB HUI

Here are the minutes from our first club hui held yesterday.

A big mihi to everyone who came - it was awesome to have four generations of whānau present at our first club-wide hui.

Thank you also to those whānau who sent apologies - this is just the beginning for our club and there will be plenty of opportunity for everyone to help shape our club and the direction we wanna go with it.

For those that were present, please let me know if there’s anything I’ve left off or have got wrong.

We’ll look to schedule our next hui early in the new year. Kia pai te rā ki a koutou!

KEEN FOR A PADDLE TOMORROW (SUNDAY 23 NOV)?

We'll be down at the waka tomorrow morning from 10.30am to about 1.00pm for anyone keen to come and have a paddle. So come on down - all welcome. Even if you haven't paddled before or you feel like you might not be fit enough - we will tailor our session to those who come along.

Please comment below if you're keen so we can get a sense of numbers.

Sorry for the late notice whānau - we came up for the hui today and weren't planning on going out tomorrow, but figured while we're here and the weather is good, we may as well make the most of the opportunity!💚🤍🖤
