Wairoa Bowling Club Results – Gisborne East Coast Champ of Champs

Over the weekend, the Wairoa Bowling Club competed in the Gisborne East Coast Senior Pairs and Senior Fours Champ of Champs events, held at Te Karaka Bowling Club and Kahutia Bowling Club.

On Saturday, Murray Glassey (skip) and Vern Withey represented Wairoa in the Senior Men’s Pairs, while Glenda Kapene (skip) and Jo Wroe played in the Senior Women’s Pairs. Both teams performed extremely well. Murray and Vern went down in a very tight match to the eventual winners, David File (skip) and Shaun Goldsbury from Te Karaka.

Glenda and Jo started the day strongly with two great wins against teams from The Gisborne Bowling Club and Tolaga Bay Bowling Club, before narrowly losing the final 14–12 to Jesse Davis-Law (skip) and Jenny Amor from The Poverty Bay Bowling Club.

On Sunday, the Senior Men’s and Women’s Fours were played at Kahutia. Representing Wairoa in the Senior Women’s Fours were Glenda Kapene (skip), Jo Wroe, Penny Mitchell and Jo Sturmey, who played a very good game against finalists Glenys Whiteman(skip), Dayvinia Mills, Ngamiro Allen and Karen Pinn from Kahutia, eventually going down by 6 shots.

The Wairoa Senior Men’s Fours team of Peter Robinson (skip), Vern Withey, Mo Governor and Wayne Goodley displayed outstanding bowls in their first two games, beating The Gisborne Bowljng Club 18–13 and the NZ National Fours bronze medallists from The Kahutia Bowling Club 19–1. These wins put the team into the final against The Tolaga Bay Bowling Club of Boon McIlroy (skip), Ricky Miller, George Tamihana and Mark Walker. Wairoa got off to a strong start in the final, leading 13–3, before Tolaga Bay fought back, picking up 8 shots over the closing ends. However, Wairoa held on to win the title 15 -11, claiming the Gisborne East Coast Senior Men’s Fours Champ of Champs title.

A remarkable achievement by the team, who now travel to Dunedin on July 24–26 to compete for the National Champ of Champs title.

Kia mau te wehi, team!
