The Love Family Trophy is locked up in the Waimate clubrooms for another season after the Premiers reversed their first round result with a good 24-20 win over the Mud Dogs at Pleasant Point Domain today.

The Premier Reserves played well again but we're well beaten by 8-55 due mainly to incisive running and breaks by the Point fullback despite matching them in most other facets of the game but can look forward to a game off next week but still a big trip to Mackenzie to support the Premiers.

Playing uphill in the first half the Premiers battled to get inside the Point half but scored two of the times they did and briefly led 10-8 before Point responded immediately to lead 15-10 at the break.

Point extended their lead five minutes into the second half with their third try but then Waimate started playing at the right end of the field and started supporting the ball carrier better.

When Anthony Amato scored his second try they narrowed the gap to within 3 points.

The arrival of Loni Toumohuni and Daniel Arthur had more forwards running straight lines and kept Point defending more than attacking and a try after 67 minutes to Epeli Rokovaka and another successful conversion to Jack Farrell put Waimate back in the lead.

Point kept coming back but the defense held until fulltime although it was nerve-wracking but a good win to move back into the top four for now.

UNSUNG HEROES

Earlier in the week we made a call out to our sponsors thanking them for all their support and today we are making a shout out 📣 to some more of our people who front up every week or as often as they can to support Waimate Rugby Club.

There is our club committee led by President Jeremy Dyson, our match day photographers Garry Drake and Waimate with Sharyn. We also have Gordon Scott keeping the clock going at the afternoon matches and our groundsman Dion Walker making sure our grounds are in great shape for practices and matches.

We also have our anonymous social media manager and over and above his committee work our statistician and historian Tony Stevenson keeps all the team and individual caps and points scoring and updating of the trophies.

Awesome work all of you - don't forget to give them a pat on the back or a thanks next time you see them!

This weekend's rugby schedule is kindly brought to you by Gold Sponsors Paul and Ros Derwin which is most appreciated.

Our Premier and Premier Reserves continue their run of away games as they head to Mud Dog Country to play Pleasant Point while it looks like our JAB teams are all on the road too while it is Roncalli Club Day where our youth players front up with Roncalli.

It is a special day too for both clubs as the Premiers play for the Bruce Love Family Trophy - Bruce was hugely respected at both clubs so it is a very special trophy and occasion.

All the best to all the players, coaches, medics and managers - Give em a taste of Waimo!!!

We also know the Mackenzie lads who play in our reserves have a healthy rivalry with Pleasant Point too so should be some great matches to watch on Saturday.

See you all there 💙❤️ 🏉 will be on 🔥🔥

A tough start to the road trips with Waimate losing both Premier matches to Temuka today.

The Premiers started well and certainly looked up for it but despite dominating possession and territory for much of the first half couldn't convert it into points while the Temuka side turned any opportunity into points going to the break ahead 23 nil.

Temuka with a penalty soon after the break stretched their lead before Fou Tagiaia scored a try to get Waimate on the board.

It took another 20 minutes before Waimate scored again this time to veteran Loni Toumohuni back to help out capping off a good game on the wing!

Now only down 14-26 the supporters had some hope that we could repeat some great comebacks from the past as Temuka took a penalty to stretch it out to 15 points and then scored on fulltime to wrap up the win by 36-14 over Waimate.

It was a tough watch as Waimate had plenty of ball but in the end the team who made the least mistakes came out on top.

The Premier Reserves were up against the top of the table Temuka side but were first to score with a penalty to Oliver Pankhurst.

However Temuka took advantage of their opportunities to score regularly to go to halftime up 22-8.

As they have most of the season Waimate had a better second spell but wet conditions on the field meant a few dropped passes but Thomas Brown showed some real wheels in the conditions to score a good try and while Waimate continued the battle 3 late converted tries to Temuka blew the score out to a 13-50 loss which didn't really reflect the game.

Well done guys you should still be proud of how you played.
