Match Report Waikanae Wanderers vs Manakau United Tuakana Teina (Again)

For the fifth time this season, the two heavyweights of HK Div 2 went head to head. After it was all square up in Manakau last week Waikanae were leaving nothing to chance, playing this game on the main stage, this was the Wanderers first outing at Jim Cooke this season, but would it be their last? With the league finished for another winter, it was time for the cup tournament.

A brief spell of rain just before kick-off reminded everyone football is a winter sport, but a quick check confirmed none of the players were made of sugar, and them game went ahead. The first half was a cagey affair. Both teams playing some great football, and having periods of dominance, but with neither team being able to make the most of their chances both teams went into the break as even as they started. Half Time 0-0

Following An inspiring half-time team talk from Chris came out fired up and ready to book their place in the next round of the cup. A few missed weren't going to put the mighty Wanderers off, and within the opening 10 minutes of the first half, they finally broke the deadlock. A tidy finish from Matty putting them up 1-0.

The first goal inspired the Wanderers, and some scintillating build up play lead to a great shot from Chris, but he was unable to get it on target. The Manakau keeper however thought the effort was worthy of a second chance, so played the goal kick straight out to Chris who took a touch, looked up, and slammed home a 30 meter screamer into the top corner! 2-0 Wanderers.

They say 2-0 is the most dangerous scoreline in football, and Manakau tried their best to prove it, but some resolute defending from the boys in red and black kept the visitors at bay, and having repelled a few attacks the Waikanae team strung together some incisive passes, culminating in a somewhat scrappy, and unconvincing goal, but a goal nonetheless, and a first goal of the season for Louis! What a time to find your goal scoring boots. 3-0 to the Wanderers!

The full time whistle sounded and a roar erupted from the sideline. A fantastic turnout from the supporters shouldn't go unmentioned! Thank you again for turning up to cheer us on every week!

Well played Manakau we'll see you again next season.

Match Report Waikanae Wanderers vs Manakau United Tuakana Teina

It was another trip up to Manakau for the mighty Wanderers. One or two of the players confused by the earlier 12.15 kick off, as Wanderers and Tuakana Teina played curtain raiser to our Div 1 equivalents. Or were we the main event and they were the encore?

Scraping together 11 just in time for kick off, the sun was shining and the grass was green, well except for the far side of the pitch where the trees cast shadows and the grass was still frosty.

The whistle went and the Waikanae boys were still getting out of bed. Some slick passing to the big man up front who took a touch, turned his defender, and fired his shot past the goalkeeper before he could react. 1-0 to Manakau and the Wanderers still hadn't realised the game had started.
Not the start we wanted.

The Wanderers rallied and Cam W playing his first game as striker rewarded the gamble with a tidy finish after some brilliant, and unselfish play by the team. 1-1, game on!

Manakau pushing hard made the most of a loose ball and got a shot off across the goal sneaking in off the back post.
The rest of the half saw both teams making great opportunities but unable to convert.

Half time 1-2

A bit of a reshuffle at half time, and the Waikanae team had finally woken up. Coming out firing with some crisp passing, and a tasty finish from Lee into the top corner! 2-2

Manakau showed great resilience and came back again! 2-3

However the Wanderers weren't done yet, and despite some desperate defending, and superb goal keeping, Chris struck for the Wanderers, 3-3!

Chances aplenty, but the goals had dried up. Definitely a game for the strikers, not the defenders, and the honours were shared at full time.

Well done Manakau, great game.

Shout out to the Rangers, who in the encore game secured the Div 1 title!

As always big thank you to the supporters who made the trip up! We love the vocal encouragement you provide our sideline!

Match Report: Waikanae Wanderers vs Manakau United Tuakana Teina

It was a sad week at Waikanae FC, with the news that club mate, Tyler Rodeka passed. Condolences to all that knew him, he was more than just a son, grandson, brother, team mate, or friend. Gone, but forever with us, we'd like to thank the Manakau players for joining us pre-match for a minutes silence and reflection.

My Wellington friends don't believe me when I tell them it's always sunny in Kapiti, but it was another glorious day as the team made the trip north for the final game of the league! Team nerves were high as kick off edged closer and there was no sign of Lee, who was responsible for post match refreshments. Without the promise of a cold drink after the game, what would motivate the team?

Thankfully Lee did show up, and he brought the drinks! That, and Joe's promise that if he kept a clean sheet he'd buy the team a round put some fire in the Wanderers bellies, and before long Lee made up for the stress he'd caused by playing and absolute delight of a ball to the back post where returning Wanderers alumnus Rich was waiting to finish. Sensing a threat to his position on the golden boot standings, captain-for-the-day Amon scored one of his own, finishing off a well worked bit of Wanderers football, with a superb shot from just outside the box, giving the team a 2-0 lead going into half time.

Following a half time with motivational speeches a plenty, and the tactics flying in fast, the Wanderers flew out the gates, but Manakau were up to the challenge, that was until Joe remembered football was played in three dimensions and thumped the ball down field. Completely bypassing his defence and midfield, with one of the greatest assists of the season he found his little brother who left the opposition defenders in his wake and with ice in his veins finished past the onrushing goal keeper. Sensing his triumphant return might be overshadowed, Rich then controlled a pin point cross, and then with the grace and composure you'd expect in a Copa America final lashed home the volley giving the Wanderes a 4-0 lead.

Despite the scoreline, the winner on the day has to be Jordan, who not only became the inaugural supporters bingo champion, but also took out the raffle back at the clubrooms.

Huge thanks to Manakau for hosting us on the pitch, and back at clubbies.

And finally, as always, a massive thanks to our supporters who help add to the game day atmosphere, and have found a way to make our games even more fun!

Match Report: Waikanae Wanderers vs Waikanae Hawks

It was all to play for this week when the HK Div 2 Waikanae derby kicked off. The previous two meetings between these sides had seens plenty of goals, and a win each way. Season's bragging rights were on the line.

The sun was shining and the Wanderers were bolstered by the return of Lee from his international sabbatical. The first half saw some of the Wanderers best football, as they finally started to gel as a team again, linking passes well all across the field.

Unfortunately the Wanderers were unable to find that killer last pass, and eventually the Hawks class showed through. Hawks taking a two goal lead into half time, including an incredibly well struck penalty Joao Felix could only dream of taking after GK Joe brought down the Hawks attacker who had snuck through on goal. Definitely a penalty, despite claims of a dive. Half Time 0-2 Hawks.

The second half saw the Wanderers struggle to find their footing a bit as the Hawks extended their lead to three. A well struck shot from outside the box glancing off the toe of the Wanderers defender trying to block it, but instead only managing to divert it away from the safe hands of his keeper.

Hope a comeback was on surfaced following a sensational left footed shot from outside the box by Rowan. Over the defenders, and sneaking in between the keeper and the crossbar, the fightback was on. Valiant as it was, it was also short lived, as the Hawks found themselves with time and space at the back post following a bit of pinball in the box, and they calmly placed the ball for their fourth goal.

The excitement was not over yet though, and a corner, and a bit of a goal line scramble at the back post saw Keith bundle the ball over the line to score his first for the season, and second for the Wanderers.

Full time 2-4 to the Hawks.

Huge thanks to Chris and Hoppy for refereeing the game. And as always a massive thank you to our enthusiastic, and vocal supports

Match Report: Waikanae Wanderers vs Ōtaki Puru Master Blasters

As the team made the journey up to Ōtaki the sun was shining and all was looking good for the visit to the table toppers. That soon changed when, with 5 minutes until kick off the temperature plummeted, and the skies opened. A quick scramble to get any unneeded gear off the sideline to the shelter and the game begun.
The usual cliches apply about tricky conditions, a heavy pitch, and both teams playing in the same conditions. I guess you could call this an improved performance, definitely a more solid effort from the team in red and black, but Ōtaki aren't top of the table by accident. A calmly taken penalty, and a well taken second goal putting the hosts 2 goals ahead at half time.

The second half saw some relief from the weather, and a slightly easier to play on penalty area for the Waikanae defenders. A much more competitive showing, Ōtaki putting a third away, and Matty coolly placing a penalty around the Ōtaki defender, it looked like second half honors were going to be shared before a late bit of tiki-taka football, from Ōtaki , a stunning save from Joe, and then a goal mouth scramble saw a fourth in the back of the net.
Officially recorded as a 3-1 victory, but we all know it was 4-1.

Congratulations to Ōtaki Puru Master Blasters on securing the HK Div 2 league title!

Thank you very much to the hardy supporters who stuck it out on the sideline, we greatly appreciate your support!

Match Report: Waikanae Wanderers vs Paekakariki Central Cosmic Unicorns

Another beautiful winter's day in Waikanae saw the Wanderers play host to our guests from the south, the Paekakariki Central Cosmic Unicorns.

Previous encounters had seen the team from Paekakariki take the points in 3-6 and 1-3 victories, this game was shaping up to be a cracker, and the Waikanae team were hoping to cause an upset and nab some points.

Unfortunately it would seem too much of the team had been staying up late (or getting up early) to watch the Euros, and the slick passing, spicy finishing, and overall team cohesion that had been building all season was slightly less slick, spicy, or cohesive than they would have liked.

A 2 goal lead to the visitors was pegged back, and it looked like Waikanae might be mounting a comeback at 2-1 before the Cosmic Unicorns netted a third just before the break. 3-1 up at half time, the second half scoreline matching the first. Paekakariki taking the spoils with a 2-6 victory. Chris scoring both Waikanae goals.

No photos sorry, the paparazzi were taking a break 📸

Match Report: Waikanae Wanderers vs KCU The Force HK Div2 Round 3

The opening Euro 2024 game played curtain raiser to the start of the HK2 Round 3, and the games couldn't have been more different. While the Euros were a dull one sided affair, Waikanae Wanderers hosted KCU The Force for a highly enjoyable, and thrilling battle.

Previous meetings between the sides had seen KCU take the honours 1-8 and 1-3, some definite improvement shown over the season by the Waikanae team, so could they finally overcome the team from Kapiti Coast United.

The Force took an early lead, but The Wanderers didn't buckle, and comments on the sideline noted it wasn't all going the way of the Force, with a lot of fight from the team and red and black and the balance of the 50/50s falling to the home team, a goal was inevitable.

That determination payed off, and some beautiful play from the Wanderers left The Force no choice but to turn the ball into their own net. 1-1, game on!

The Force however, rallied, showed that former div 1 pedigree and took a 1-2 lead into the break.

Both teams came out in the second half trying to take control of the game, but it was the visitors that scored first, giving themselves some breathing room and a 1-3 lead.

The home team, spurred on by their vociferous supporters, pulled themselves back into the game with a calm finish from the young front man Matty, picking his spot and beautifully curling the ball round the keeper in into the back of the net.

The game then took an unexpected twist as the referee had to be substituted, coming down with an ankle injury with 30 minutes to play.

The teams clearly smelled blood in the water, and intensity, and ni**le, lifted for the incoming referee.

KCU extending their lead once again 2-4, but weary legs were starting to show, and in what had been a very clean game, the foul count started to climb, even with a visually impaired referee!

Waikanae's dominance was starting to show, and ill discipline almost cost The Force, with a powerfully struck free kick from Chris on the edge of the box just grazing the top of the crossbar! With moments left in regular time, and another free kick in a very similar location was this time guided on target by Chris. The force of the shot too much for The Force shotstopper, with no option but to parry the ball into onrushing Wanderers attackers. Eisa earning credit for Waikanae's third.

3-4 and with only the referees discretion left on the clock, both teams pushed on, but there were to be no last minute heroics. KCU taking the points.

Great composure by The Wanderers to stay in it, and push right until the final whistle, but it wasn't to be.

Special thanks to the two referees. It's a real privilege to get official Capital Football referees as often as we do, but when we don't someone has to give up game time to provide both teams a common enemy, and give the game some semblance of control.

Goals to Oggie, Matty, and Eisa
Man(s) of the match to referees Amon, and Tom.

Wanderers 2024 Round 2 Recap

Round two is done and dusted. It was a tough round but the team dug deep and put in some gutsy performances. Definitely earned their post match cold drinks!

The opening game against KCU's The Force showed how much a bit of regular game time together can help. a much improved performance, but not quite enough to stop the unstoppable Force. 1-3 defeat at sunny Weka Park. Matty scoring the consolation goal.

The return fixture against Paekakariki saw us wander down to Campbell Park. Not the lovely mild conditions we're used to in Waikanae, but a great game of football to be had. Again a solid improvement on the previous meeting, a stunning strike earning Thomas his first Wanderers goal, and a spectacular penalty save from Joe, but the heroics were not quite enough to break Wanderers' Paekakariki hoodoo. Another 1-3 defeat.

Back home and playing host to table toppers Otaki. 2-4 at half time things were looking good, but unfortunately a second half blow out saw Otaki run away to a 2-8 victory. A spicy affair with 5 yellow cards. Amon and Danny scoring excellent goals!

Wanderers were the away team for the Waikanae derby. Danny's final Wanderers game of the season, and a debut for Cam W the team had plenty of reason to put on a show. Unfortunately the Hawks attack proved too much. It's all to play for in the final round! Hawks took this one 0-5.

Another sunny day in Waikanae saw a visit from Manakau Tuakana Teina. Great resolve shown by the Wanderers coming back from a goal down. Matt scoring a blinder to equalize and Rowan putting us in front with his first goal of the season. Goal Keeper Joe caused his poor back line far too much stress when he marched up the pitch to take a late penalty. Thankfully he put it away! 3-1 to the Wanderers!

12 different goal scorers to trouble the stats-man so far this season, who's going to score next?

Bring on the third round!

Wanderers 2024 Round 1 Recap

With only 6 teams in HK Div 2 this year the first round of games is already complete, so I thought why not provide a little update.

The draw saw the Wanderers come up against KCU's The Force for the opening game. Freshly relegated after one season in the topflight, the Wanderers fancied their chances. Unfortunately, the off-season rust was more established for the Waikanae boys, and although they put in a valiant shift, the first game of the season went the way of The Force 8-1. Danny Santos making sure The Force didn't leave Waikanae with a clean sheet.

With plenty to work on from the opening game, the task didn't get much easier with a visit from old foes Paekakariki Cosmic Unicorns, the Wanderers hoping to pick up their first win against the Cosmic Unicorns in the team's history. A fierce battle on the pitch, with both Chris and Matty scoring. Unfortunately, the Wanderers were a bit too dazzled by the Cosmic Unicorns, the game ending in favour of the Paekakariki team 6-3. An improvement on the previous season though, no serious injuries to Wanderers players as a result of this fixture.

Next up and the fixtures got no easier as the team travelled to Otaki. The earlier kick off, and a couple of player absences potentially throwing off the team rhythm, adding to the difficulty level of this game. Otaki Puru Master Blasters the first team to keep a clean against sheet against the Wanderers, running away 5-0.

Up next was the Waikanae derby versus the Hawks, and what a game it was. Chris with one of the goals of the season, Dan, Isaiah, and Amon’s mate Oggie also hitting the back of the net. It wasn’t all one-way traffic though, and Hawks saved face with a couple of goals of their own. 5-2 the final score and the Wanderers picked up their first win!

The final game of the round saw the long trip up the coast to Manakau. Clear skies, and a freshly mown paddock, what better setting for a game of football. Chris making an early run for the golden boot with another goal. Eisa celebrated his Wanderers 2024 debut with a brace, and goals from the two Matts rounded out the Wanderers efforts. Manakau Tuakana Teina with a couple of goals to save face, the final score a repeat of the previous week’s 5-2 to the Wanderers
