This weekend it’s the turn of our Junior Surf athletes to step up at the Aon New Zealand Pool Rescue Championships 🙌🏼

We have 6 Junior Surf athletes (U11–U14) taking on brick carries, obstacle swims, patient tows, relays and more, racing against clubs from all over New Zealand. Special shout-out to Aron May, Junior Surf dad, senior surf lifeguard and SAR Squad member, who is competing too - leading by example for our next generation.

Pool Rescue is about teamwork, determination, and learning the skills that prepare our tamariki to become future surf lifeguards. Huge credit to our athletes and coaches for the dedication and training to get here, and a big thank you to the legend parents volunteering as officials, timekeepers, organisers and more.

🚴 A fresh new bike track for tamariki - right here at Bowentown!

There’s a brand-new look at the Bowentown Bike Track - and it’s been designed with tamariki in mind.

Two fun loops, four different riding lines, and an awesome new start platform make this the perfect spot for younger riders to build skills and confidence - or just enjoy being outdoors with whānau. The compact layout also means it’s easier for parents and caregivers to keep an eye on things.

The rebuild was completed in late July thanks to Southstar Trails and a crew of over 20 local volunteers - part of a broader community project connected to our Bowentown Rescue Hub. While the hub’s core purpose is to support surf lifeguarding and SAR response, we also chipped in to help fund this rebuild - a practical way of giving back to the community our lifeguards serve.

Huge thanks to all the groups involved in bringing this project together:
Western Bay of Plenty District Council
Waihi Beach Mountain Bike Club
Pio Shores Sports & Community Association
Waihi Beach Lifeguard Services
Waihi Beach Trails Charitable Trust
Bike Clinic

And to the awesome local businesses who donated time, gear or materials:
Bowentown Beach Holiday Park
Design House Architecture
Beach Contractors
Bay Worx Contractors
Mears Earthworks
Oswald Homes
Bike Clinic (yes, twice - they’ve been incredible!)

🌱 A quick reminder: please stick to the main riding lines while the new grass settles in, avoid using the track when it’s wet, and keep all motorbikes (including electric ones) off the track for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

Take the kids for a ride this weekend (if the weather plays ball!) - it’s a brilliant local space built just for them!
