Waves > Wi-Fi: Our Surf Day Recap
What an incredible day at the beach! Our recent free surf day was more than just a lesson in catching waves; it was a powerful statement about the kind of childhood we want for our kids in Aotearoa.
🤝 A Vital Collaboration
This event was a proud collaboration with Smartphone Free Childhood New Zealand. We’ve seen firsthand how much the digital world can pull us away from the physical one. By partnering together, we wanted to show that when you remove the screens, the connection between parents, kids, and nature becomes the main event.
🎤 Guest Speakers: Kids Unplugged
We were stoked to have guest speakers from Kids Unplugged join us on the sand. Their talk really hit home—reminding us that "real kids" need "real adventures."
They shared the vision behind their new webseries (which launched on April 2nd!), which focuses on:
• Bush hikes and beach rides.
• Hunting for "wild kai."
• Taking on "big missions" that require grit, not an algorithm.
🏄♂️ The Verdict: Success!
We called the event "Catch Waves, Not Wi-Fi," and the results spoke for themselves.
• Zero Screens: For a few hours, the only thing being "scrolled" was the face of a wave.
• Pure Stoke: The confidence kids gained from standing up on a board far outweighs any digital achievement.
• Community Strength: Seeing families connect without the distraction of notifications was the ultimate win.
📢 Join the Mission
If you missed the event but want to support the cause:
1. Join Smartphone Free Childhood NZ: Get involved with the Parent Pact to delay smartphone use for our tamariki.
2. Watch Kids Unplugged: Scan their QR code to subscribe to their series and get inspired for your next family mission.
3. Stay Salty: Keep an eye out for our next "unplugged" surf session.
The best adventures don’t need a signal—they just need a surfboard and a sense of wonder.
