Jacques Cochonnet Trophy lost
Upper Hutt hosted the third challenge of the year for the JC Trophy from Naenae, on Sunday 7th June 2026, on a glorious warm and sunny day.

The teams gathered at 09:00 and play began at 09:30. Upper Hutt took all three of the first round, putting them in a commanding position. However, Naenae then took all three games of the second round, making it 3-3 for the final round. The 3rd round finally went to Naenae with 2 games to Upper Hutt's 1, making it 5-4 to the victors, Naenae, with a lot of superb pointing and shooting from both sides.

Upper Hutt has held the trophy for 23 consecutive wins and Naenae will now face Masterton at Naenae for the next scheduled challenge. We wish them well with their newly gained trophy.

The Upper Hutt team consisted of Dave Gwerder, Linda Brown and Colin Gooch (Triples), Brian Smith and Adrienne Gwerder (Doubles) and Mary Khalil (Singles). The Naenae team consisted of Bronnie Winter, Paul Haines and Peter Van Heusden (Triples), Terry Coleman and Michael Rocks (Doubles), and Lee Mathewman (Singles).

UHPC Autumn Leaves Tournament 2026
This tournament was held at Maidstone Park on Sunday 24th May after having been postponed from 12th April due to a cyclone threat. Although the start was autumnal, the sun shone all day making the cool northerly bearable. 32 entries from around the Wellington region participated, with a couple being shared entries to cater for those unable or unwilling to play 5 full games. The format was 50 minute games with no extra end unless as a tie-breaker, and 3 games were played before lunch. The afternoon was markedly cooler due to the wind but everyone was wrapped up tight.
The unluckiest player was Chris Wood from Masterton, who took home a goody bag donated by Summerset Retirement Homes.
3rd place was won by Graeme Pilcher from Masterton, with 4 wins and a differential of 25.
2nd place was won by Bruce Stephenson from Naenae, also with 4 wins but a differential of 30.
1st place was won by John Pryer, also from Masterton, also with 4 wins, but a differential of 31, making it a very close finish indeed.
The three winners all took home cash prizes, and the $50 raffle was won by Adrienne Gwerder from Upper Hutt.
Thanks to all the helpers, food donors, and participants, and hearty congratulations to all the winners.

The 2026 annual Open Swiss Doubles tournament took place on Sunday 22nd March at Maidstone Park on a most beautiful autumn day. 22 teams were entered from around the Wellington region, although one team was unable to make it so a Bye was used in each round. 5 rounds of Swiss at 60m with no extra end were played over 12 pistes, 3 before lunch and 2 after. Swiss format is a great way to rank players or teams within just a few games, as winners are automatiocally paired against winners, while non-winners are paired against non-winners after each round.
The ranking used after each round of games was based on number of games won first, then by Buchholz 1, then by Buchholz 2 (also known as fine Buchholz), and finally by differential. Most players are familiar with games won and differential, but tournaments such as Swiss are deemed 'fairer' using Buchholz because it takes into account the strengths (based on results at the time) of the opposing teams, scaled by the number of games played, thereby more accurately determining the true ranking. The final ranking results attached show that using traditional ranking by only games won and differential, would have had a very different result for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. At the end of the 5 games, the unluckiest team was John, Kathy and Jan (Bean Bags) from Upper Hutt, with 1 win, who took away a couple of goody bags kindly donated by Summeset. Third place was Colin and Bob, (The Young Ones) from Upper Hutt, with 4 wins. Second place was Paul and Murray (Old Duffers) also from Upper Hutt and with 4 wins. In first place was Theresa and Seymour Harawira (Untouchables) with 5 wins, from Silverstream. The top 3 teams all took away generous cash prizes paid from club funds.
Thanks to all the helpers and food doners on the day, as well as all the players; many of whom travelled some distance despite the price of fuel at the moment, and helped make a great day of play.

Masterton Petanque Club held their annual Open Triples tournament on Saturday 28th February on a sunny warm day, though a cool start. 8 teams were entered from various clubs, including from outside the Wellington region, drawn in part by the sponsorship of the event by Arvida Landsdowne Estate, a popular retirement community in Masterton. Arvida Lansdowne provided a hamper and the prize money for the tournament.
Initially 4 random draw games were played in order to provide the ranking of the 8 teams, at which point they were split into 2 divisions of 4 teams each. Each division then played a semi-final and then a final to determine the winner and runner-up for each division.
The 2nd division winners were Graham and Ingrid Edmondson (Hawkes Bay) and Mike Robinson (Upper Hutt), and the runners-up were Steve Loftus, Dave Roper and Sue Walker, all from Masterton. The overall 1st division winners in a very close final (13-11) were Dave and Adrienne Gwerder, and Derek Worsley, all from Upper Hutt. Their very worthy opponents and the runners-up were Michelle Maxwell and Debby Butler (Kapiti) and Michael Rocks (Naenae).
The sponsorship of such events is key to drawing in entries from farther afield than the local region, and helps considerably to get clubs to communicate socially and obtain a greater mix of players and capabilities, whilst retaining the friendliness of the game of petanque. Arvida Lansdowne have expressed an interest to continue to sponsor this event in the future.
Thanks to Masterton Petanque Club and Arvida Lansdowne Estate for a great day.

Masterton Petanque Club hosted the final challenge of the playing season for the Jacques Cochonnet Trophy from holders Upper Hutt, on Wednesday 28th January 2026, in warm and dry sunny conditions.
The teams gathered at 09:00 and play began at 09:30. Upper Hutt took only 1 of the 3 games in the first round, and another 2 in the second round, making it 3-3 at that point when a break for lunch took place. The final round had everyone on tenterhooks until the end of the 2nd game at which point Upper Hutt had won both, and therefore the match. Upper Hutt then went on to win the 3rd game to make the total 6 games to Masterton's 3. This was the 21st consecutive win for Upper Hutt for the coveted trophy. The Upper Hutt team consisted of Dave Gwerder, Brian Smith and Mary Khalil (Triples), Adrienne Gwerder and Linda Brown (Doubles) and Derek Worsley (Singles). The Masterton team consisted of Graeme Morris, Sue Walker and Dave Roper (Triples), Graeme Pilcher and Vaughan Paul (Doubles), and John Pryer (Singles).
The next year's order of challengers and venues will be drawn at a WPA meeting in due course.
