We’re incredibly proud to share that our co-founder and owner of NZCIS Malcolm Gillies has been recognised for his services to business in the 2026 New Year Honours List.

Malcolm’s vision and passion are at the heart of NZCIS and shape everything we do. From NZCIS to Brewtown, and through his genuine commitment to Upper Hutt, his leadership is reflected in the values we stand by and the outcomes we achieve.

Today we honoured our dearest of friends and founding kaumàtua Luke Crawford.

Along with his close whanau, school mates and students from Hato Paora, friends and colleagues, kaumàtua from Òrongomai, and Upper Hutt Kapahaka, we unveiled a beautiful Mark Stafford portrait of Lukey.

Matua Luke, our e hoa ‘Lukey’, took the journey with us well before the whenua had been broken. His friendship, understanding, compassion, and infinite wisdom provided laughter, insights, connection, energy, and ultimately guided our waka.

Luke led the development of the tikanga that welcomes everyone to NZCIS. He moulded our values of growth, persistence, and connection to make the ‘waka go faster’. He directed the uplifting of the Mauri Stone to take its place as the heart of the campus and ensured any of our blind spots were addressed with dignity and patience.

Luke’s taura will forever be in the wharewaka. He has bound us together, and his taura will always remind us of that gift. The many threads of his life and contributions to so many people, here and afar, are bound tightly to form a single taura where his words lead to our actions of being stronger together.

We aroha you Lukey – there will never be another like you.

For the second year, from January 19-23, 2026, the Barça Academy Australia & New Zealand will be running their exclusive training camps at the NZCIS facilities.

Players will have the chance to experience Barça’s world-class football methodology, delivered by coaches from Barcelona, and learn the core values of one of the world’s most respected football clubs.

Announced today by Associate Education Minister David Seymour , New Zealand’s first sports school — the New Zealand Performance Academy Aotearoa (NZPAA) — will open right here on the NZCIS campus in Upper Hutt from Term 1, 2026!

The academy will give young athletes the chance to pursue their sporting dreams while gaining a top-quality education — no more choosing between school and sport.

Leveraging the expertise of the , NZPAA will offer elite football and rugby training, with more sports to come. The school will teach a nationally recognised curriculum alongside world-class athletic development — all supported by NZCIS’s high-performance facilities and coaching environment.

NZCIS is proud to support the next generation of athletes. This is a huge step forward for sport and education in Aotearoa — and we’re thrilled to be part of it!

The NZCIS owners (Malcolm Gillies and Kevin Melville) wish to acknowledge and thank Jamie Tout for his contribution over the past years.

“Having sat at the fore-front of the development, scope and design of NZCIS Performance Institute from its instigation back in 2016, Jamie has spent years invested in the creation of this project, working collaboratively with the now foundation members and a large cohort of international teams. This included the design, the project management and implementation of the operating business. With a significant skill-set in start-up and project management on this particular project – Jamie will now take the opportunity to round out some significant projects in the business, before concluding his consultancy role at NZCIS at the end of September, with NZCIS transitioning from ‘start-up’ to ‘operational business’.”

Jamie’s leadership, energy, and vision have been instrumental in shaping NZCIS into what it is today: a world-class performance environment recognised globally as a blueprint for a unique multi-code and shared-use model. NZCIS has become a destination not only for elite sporting teams, but also for international corporate conferences, leadership gatherings, and wellness retreats that inspire transformation. It stands proudly at the intersection of high performance, sport, and business - where lessons from the field fuel leadership in the boardroom, and where the discipline, resilience, and teamwork of athletes spark innovation in organisations.

As NZCIS celebrates its third anniversary this month, it is timely to reflect on the cultural values that have been embedded from the very beginning - from the waka paddles and taura ceremony to the enduring principles of inclusivity and community that underpin the NZCIS Performance Institute.

Highlights during Jamie’s tenure include hosting Sweden during the FIFA Women’s World Cup, welcoming both the All Blacks and Black Ferns as they established NZCIS as their official training base, and more recently, accommodating international clubs such as Wrexham AFC. These milestones reflect the reputation and reach NZCIS has earned.

As NZCIS confidently steps into its next phase, we acknowledge Jamie’s legacy and enduring contribution. We also extend our best wishes as he takes the opportunity to spend time with his whānau and explore new challenges ahead.

Sense Rugby NZ is an occupational therapy-led rugby program designed to help tamariki and rangatahi participate in active recreation and sport.

Whānau were delighted to experience our spaces, and one of the highlights of the day was an inclusive and fun game of rippa rugby with the Wellington Rugby Wellington Pride 🏉.

Events like this, where families of young people with a range of disabilities and needs can come together, play, and celebrate sport, are truly mana-enhancing for our community.

We’re proud to provide a venue that helps create memories like these.
