This is a great read on the latest research to help you keep healthy as you age! Luckily we do most of these in our classes here at Queen Street Fitness. Pop along to try one of our Active Aging Classes, held every week day at 10.30am or email [email protected] for more details 😊

A study has found that just a monthly jog is enough to reduce the risk of dementia, and it's not the only easy lifestyle change with a big benefit.

There is honey in the office for sale from our local farm Bluebank in the Akatarawa Valley. $13 for a pot of honey. If you suffer from hayfever and you live in the area, a little honey each day helps to build your immune system up to reduce pollen allergies from local pollen.

It also tastes AMAZING! Grab a pot when you are next in the gym 🥰

Nutrition and hydration is critical to how our body moves, our hormonal state, our emotional state and our overall mental wellbeing. BUT - we all know this is easier said than done! How can we improve our nutrition and hydration to get more out of our fitness, movement and support brain and gut function so our hormones can keep us well and happy?

Food is becoming increasingly expensive. Particularly here in Aotearoa New Zealand. The cheaper foods tend to be processed and lacking the necessary nutrients to support recovery and repair in the human body. Something so simple can become complex when we start to investigate how food can affect our tissue health!

Honestly, we are surrounded by an abundance of food. The easiest way to start to work on your nutrition, is to look at portion control and the speed with which food is eaten. So what can you do today to help?

Here is one thing you can work on:

Time yourself eating your next meal. See if you can take longer and longer to eat your meal. The perfect amount of time for our bodies to intake the nutrients from our food is 20 minutes. Note your time with each meal and not the level of satiety (or satisfaction), satiety levels will increase as the length of time eating increases, thus we have natural portion control.

Have a go, note down your results and comment here to let us know what you discovered!

Do you live with chronic pain?

It can be super hard to keep fit when you are in pain all the time. It will spike carb cravings (read sugar!) and just make life hard in general. It is tiring and can affect our mental health, it can cause weight gain and fatigue.

Many of our clients and members have chronic pain or have had chronic pain. So what is chronic pain and how does it come about?

Pain starts in receptor nerve cells found beneath the skin and in organs throughout the body. When you are sick, injured, or have other type of problem, these receptor cells send messages along nerve pathways to the spinal cord, which then carries the message to the brain. Pain medicine reduces or blocks these messages before they reach the brain.

Pain can be anything from slightly bothersome, such as a mild headache, to something excruciating and emergent, such as the chest pain that accompanies a heart attack, or pain of kidney stones. Pain can be acute, meaning new, subacute, lasting for a few weeks or months, and chronic, when it lasts for more than 3 months.

Chronic pain is one of the most costly health problem in U.S. Increased medical expenses, lost income, lost productivity, compensation payments, and legal charges are some of the economic consequences of chronic pain.

One of the most common causes of limited activity is low back pain and pain related to arthritis.

Other pain disorders such as the neuralgias and neuropathies that affect nerves throughout the body, pain due to damage to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), as well as pain where no physical cause can be found--psychogenic pain--increase the total number of reported cases.

So how can movement help pain?

We have years of experience working with clients (in conjunction with preferred physiotherapists) to find client led solutions to long term pain. It takes time, consistency and some patience to get the body out of a "pain" state and into a less painful state, but with the right guidance, our staff here at Queen Street Fitness can offer solutions to help your body move with less pain!

We work closely with specialists, preferred physiotherapists and doctors to ensure you are fully supported.

Contact us today to chat about your situation, we have many tools available and an experienced and understanding team of people to support your recovery out of pain.

Don't be shy - message us now and see what we can do to help!

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and how can I safely exercise if I have it?

The Mayo Clinic defines Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) as "a complicated disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that lasts for at least six months and that can't be fully explained by an underlying medical condition. The fatigue worsens with physical or mental activity, but doesn't improve with rest.6/07/2022".

Here at Queen Street Fitness, we specialise in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Our Movement Coach Carol Pirika was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue and ultimately CFS prior to entering the fitness industry.

"The hardest part is people can't see you are fatigued, they don't understand that rest doesn't make the fatigue go away and it can make any movement difficult and tiring - you constantly walk around in a brain fog, even just functioning can be difficult!" - Carol Pirika

Bex Otte our Exercise Physiologist has specialised in CFS and also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in guiding clients to help them manage their condition.

Our main mission is to bring a movement and fitness solution to those who struggle with this condition. If you, or someone you know, needs some guidance in this space - please reach out to us! We offer a quiet space, with low stimulation and a capped membership - perfect for those who need assistance when dealing with CFS.
