We've been running our Saturday morning 9 am Beginner Sword Class at the Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy for about 4 months.

It has 12 students. Attrition so far as been zero. We have low attrition rates across all of our classes - even the Hapkido Dragons and Hapkido Tigers classes. But the sword classes seem to have almost zero attrition.

Because we reached maximum class capacity really quickly, we brought some more equipment so we can now add up to 4 new people in the 9 am Sword class.

But there is also interest from other people who can't train on Saturday mornings.

So later this Winter we will be adding a a new Sword Class and a Self-Defence class on Wednesdays along with possibility a Junior Black Belt class.

We also host a small Aikido group at our Academy on Wednesday evenings as well after their previous venue closed down. So if Hapkido or Swords aren't your thing, then you also have this option as well.

We have started our June gradings.

Tonight Elliot graded to Dragons Orange Belt.

In the Foundation class, Alfie and Aurora graded to Tigers Yellow Belt. Cameron, Georgia, Hazel and Zoe J graded to Tigers Single Red Tip.

In the Hapkido Development Class , Fletcher and Flynn graded to Tigers Single Black Tip.

In the Adult class Connie graded to Yellow Belt. Samo and Alexander graded to Blue Belt. They moved into the adult class from Tigers earlier in the year and this was their first adult grading.

All of the gradings were of a high standard reflecting the hard work that everyone has put into their training.

We are going through a busy grading patch at the Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy.

Tonight Dan and Phoebe did their self-defence tests as part of their Hapkido 2nd Dan Black Belt grading requirements.

2nd Dan self-defence techniques are counter techniques and there were some great techniques on display.

Dan and Phoebe have been working really hard juggling this and their preparation for the World Kido Federation/Hanminjok Hapkido Association's Hapkido World Championships next month. At least they how have a few weeks to focus on this.

A big night at the Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy when we hosted David Ollivier from the Wellington Hapkido Academy for his 4th Dan grading.

4th Dan is a Master level grade in New Zealand Hapkido and takes most people 20 years to attain.

David is the 9th person in the 50 year history of Hapkido in New Zealand to grade to 4th Dan and the 7th person who I have graded to this level.

We have many very competent 1st to 3rd Dan Hapkido Black Belts in New Zealand. Many with 40 years plus training under their belts. Getting them to grade higher is like getting blood from a stone and David has been no exception!

David did a very good grading. Sean and Shihan Mike joined me on the grading panel. I like to have a senior figure from another martial arts style assisting with our high level gradings.

Good late week classes at the Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy tonight.

Thursday is our busiest day with Hapkido Dragons, Hapkido Tigers Foundation, Hapkido Tigers Development, Hapkido Ground Combatives and Hapkido classes.

80% of our Hapkido White Belt group are women. I credit this to our very strong team of female Black Belts.

Big classes at the Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy tonight. Here is the 4.30 pm Hapkido Tigers Foundation oundation Class.

Tigers Foundation Class are either graduates from our Hapkido Dragons classes or have joined with no martial arts experience.

The Dragons students are already well prepared for the structured Hapkido training that this class offers. Many of the other students struggle a bit at first but they eventually do well.

This particular group of Tigers Foundation students are a really good group. A large group of them gave almost finished their journey in this class and will soon more into the Hapkido Tigers Development Class.

The new 'Martial X' class at the Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy kicked off last Friday with 7 people but no fanfare.

Tonight's class had 8. Including 4 people not associated with our Academy.

The Wednesday night Mobility Class now has 10 or 12 regular people.

We launched these two new classes to expose our Academy to a wider range of people - who otherwise might not be interested in doing our Hapkido or Sword Classes.

This helps spread the benefits that our Academy provides wider into the general community.

The next step is to launch a dedicated Self-Defence Class - possibly after the Mobility Class on Wednesdays. If I found a female instructor, we could possibly make this as a woman's only class.

Any interest?
