Rowers run on carbs and build and recover with protein.

After the incredibly hard work from our squads building fitness and refining their technique this weekend at Mangakino, we are immensely grateful for the ongoing support of our incredible sponsors Wilcox, Bakers Delight Pukekohe and Pokeno Bacon for the fuel they provide us.

Our rowers devoured potatoes, carrots and onions from Wilcox, inhaled garlic bread, toast, toasties and burger buns from Bakers Delight Pukekohe, and pulled pork, sausages and ham from Pokeno Bacon. The generosity of these sponsors enables us to provide delicious and nutrient dense food that our athletes want to eat, while keeping costs down for our families, meaning more kids get the chance to give rowing a try.

And thank you to our families working tirelessly in the kitchen all weekend, churning out meal after meal and keeping things clean, tidy and functional!

Yesterday Mercer Rowing Club was honoured to host the memorial service of our long term patron Jeanette Thomas (nee Roose).

Jeanette’s family accompanied her across the Caesar Roose Bridge with a police es**rt, and she was welcomed into Mercer Rowing Club with a Guard of Honour formed by our newest generation of rowers.

During the service Trevor Simpson gave a tribute on behalf of Mercer Rowing Club, and spoke about her love of the river and significant ongoing contributions to fundraising, especially after damage to the clubrooms from flooding, and support of the annual Mercer Regatta.

Jeanette left Mercer Rowing Club through a second Guard of Honour, this time formed by Life Members, master and former rowers of the club.

Jeanette’s contribution, and that of her father Caesar Roose, was integral to the founding and continuation of Mercer Rowing Club, creating ongoing opportunities for generations of local rowers to experience this life changing sport, from fitness and friendship to competing and winning at the highest international levels.

Jeanette Thomas (nee Roose)
26 May 1934 - 17 September 2026

Jeanette Thomas was an intelligent, progressive, determined woman whose legacy will continue to benefit future generations.

Jeanette was a valued patron, closely connected to Mercer, and a gracious and loyal supporter of the Mercer Rowing Club for many years, as was her father Caesar Roose.

Jeanette donated the land our clubrooms stand on, the building Counties Manukau Rowing Club Inc uses, and was instrumental in pushing for the bridge we use to cross the river. We are fortunate to have benefitted from both Caesar’s and Jeanette’s foresight, which was the foundation for what our Club is today.

Our thoughts are with Jeanette’s family and we are honoured to host her farewell. A celebration of Jeanette’s life will be held on Monday 12 October at 1 pm at The Mercer Rowing Club. Jeanette had a soft spot for the Mercer Rowing Club, and the family has asked that donations in lieu of flowers are made to the Mercer Rowing Club.

Just three weeks into training, it's great seeing our novices growing in confidence with every row.

We love getting videos when they begin so we can look back in a few months and show them just how much they've improved!

Training for the 2026/27 season is well underway, so we asked some of our returning rowers what they like about rowing for Mercer Rowing Club.

Finn Murphy competed at the 2026 ICF Canoe Sprint & Paracanoe World Championships last week; he has performed incredibly on the world stage, making through to the A Finals in the KL3 Men 200m and grabbing sixth place.

We've been watching his global sporting success since he was a high school rower at Mercer, and he commented on the impact of rowing when he spoke to Franklin Times recently, "...the club was fundamental to my development as a young athlete and I’m incredibly grateful [for that].” he says.

From Franklin to Germany and Poland, local paddler, Finn Murphy is laying down the law, leaving the world in his wake. On August 26–30, he’s aiming to add to his laurels with a win at the ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships. However, rather than keeping his eyes on the prize, Murp...
