ONE DOOR SHUTS AND ANOTHER OPENS - Hey everyone, after some serious reflection I've decided to call 'Time' on my FB posts. I didn't realise until I starting looking back, that I've been writing them for almost 5 years!!! It's been a real privilege to share ideas, insights and hopefully a little inspiration, over that time. And yes, it will be sad to shut the door on what has been a significant part of my life. However, another new and exciting door is opening that will provide me with opportunities to learn, grow and develop the skills and degrees I have outside of the fitness industry, including my love of writing.

I will still be doing PT part-time and Group sessions (bootcamp and exercise classes) with my awesome clients, crew and participants, but I am taking on 20 hours a week in administration, communications and project management. I'm pretty nervous if I'm being honest, as it's been well over a decade since I had an "office job".

Tomorrow is my first day, so I'm heading to bed soon to get a decent sleep - after eating well and drinking plenty of water (of course). I will be getting up early to fit in some exercise before heading to the office, where I hopefully won't be sitting all day (that's probably what I'm looking forward to the least). Anyway, the point is, the good habits I keep posting about aren't going to change for me just because my routine will be a little different. I am, however, going to have to be a bit more disciplined and self-motivated on the exercise front now that I won't conveniently be at the gym everyday!
🤣🤣🤣

So, I will sign off now by saying thanks for reading, sharing and contributing to my posts over the years. But, most of all, thank you for following me on what's been both a professional and personal journey of: growth, evolution, self-discovery, self-confidence and inner-strength.
💪💪💛 👍👍😊 👋👋 ❤️

TAKING A TECH TIMEOUT - After watching The Social Dilemma the other night and with school holidays on I'm going to take a step away from non-essential tech usage for a while, including these posts. I know I don't use my phone that much, but it's still a pretty big fixture in my life, so I'm going to make a concerted effort to reduce my screen time. How about you? 👍👍💛

PLEASE WATCH 'THE SOCIAL DILEMMA'
This movie was released in 2020, so you may have already seen it, but it is a MUST WATCH!!! It's one of the most concerning things I've watched in recent times regarding the power social media has over our lives - particularly for those born since the turn of the century. Levels of anxiety, depression and su***de have sky-rocketed in young people, along with a lack of resilience.

I was shocked by some of the information and facts presented. Please watch 🙏 It definitely reassures me that my unwillingness to participate in social media, unless absolutely necessary, is totally justified!!! 😲😲😲

ASPARTAME LINKED TO CARCINOGENS - Considering the amount of sugar free gum I used to chew - I gave up several years ago now thankfully - the below online news short caught my attention.

"One of the world's most common artificial sweeteners, Aspartame, is set to be declared a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) next month.

Two sources told Reuters that aspartame, sometimes listed as the ingredient 'sweetener (951)', will be listed as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" for the first time by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the WHO's cancer research arm.

Drinks like Diet Coke and Pepsi Max, sugar-free chewing gum such as Wrigley's Extra, and sugar substitutes like Equal contain aspartame, among other foods and additives available in New Zealand.

The IARC ruling is intended to assess if something is a potential hazard based on published evidence, however it does not take into account how much aspartame can be safely consumed.

Advised dosage would come from a separate WHO expert committee, the Joint WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization's Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), alongside determinations from national regulators, such as the Ministry for Primary Industries in New Zealand."

It will be interesting to see what the recommended dosage comes out at 👍👍🤔

BEER TANNING? SERIOUSLY!!! - An article about a new sun tanning trend being promoted on Tik Tok popped up on my news feed the other day and was like WTF! Are you actually serious!!! According to the article, beer tanning has taken parts of the internet by storm. Thankfully though it's being slammed by skin experts as "downright dangerous".

And, it's not to say there haven't been silly and dangerous tanning trends in the past - coconut oil and baby oil spring to mind from when I was growing up. However, in this day and age, with all we know about just how harmful over-exposure to the sun can be, WHY would you promote what is basically basting yourself like a chicken ready for the rotisserie???!!! The idiocy and dangerousness of it blows my mind, and only serves to fuel my dislike of where social media is heading. If only common sense were a little more common

STILLNESS PRACTICE CAME IN REAL HANDY - So, yesterday I had my first MRI and it was an experience! The guy warned me that the machine was really loud, but I wasn't prepared for just how loud even despite having ear plugs and headphones playing music. And to be honest, it wasn't the volume of the noise that threw me it was actually the fact the sounds changed intermittently, it went quiet all of a sudden and then boom the next loud sound came. Plus, all the sounds sounded like warning alarms 😬

Add to that:
1. I get claustrophobic in small spaces
2. You need to stay really still to get good quality images
3. You need to try to be relaxed not stiff whilst being still

All this added up to just about every fibre of my being telling me to get the 'F' outta there!!!

Luckily for me, I've been doing a lot of meditation lately and my favourite meditation pose is The Mummy Pose (as pictured). So, I shut my eyes as soon as the headphones went on and didn't open them again until it was over, 30 mins later, just as they finished bringing me out of the tunnel. I focused on breathing in a quiet, calm and relaxed way, and I kept telling myself it was OK, I was safe and I was doing this for an important reason.

Mission accomplished. But, I tell you what, staying still and calm in this situation was really putting my meditation skills to the test. 🧘🧘💛

VIT C DOESN'T JUST COME FROM ORANGES!

13. Broccoli and Cauliflower
14. Brussel Sprouts and Cabbage
15. Lemons, Grapefruit and other Citrus
16. Lychees and Pineapples

RESISTANCE TRAINING FOR WOMEN 40+
Ladies, did you know that from the age of 40 you start losing 1% of your muscle mass each year, up to 2% in your 50s and 3% for those 60+. What this means is that, over time it's common to:
A. Lose Strength
B. Lose Stability
C. Gain Weight
So regular resistance-based training is essential!!! The benefits are many:

1. Retaining/building muscle mass
2. Retaining/building bone density
3. Retaining/improving muscle tone
4. Retaining/improving muscle definition
5. Maintaining/increasing metabolism
6. Preventing injuries
7. Improving range of motion
8. Aiding functionality - like continuing to be able to walk up and down stairs confidently
9. Improving mental health
10. Aiding better sleep
11. Maintaining/building confidence

So, come on ladies 40s and over, the positives to resistance training are huge. However, if you're not sure about getting into it then seek help from the pros at your local fitness centre 💪💪💛

MIGRAINES WITHOUT HEADACHES - Did you know, not all migraines are the same and that a migraine doesn't necessarily preclude a headache? I didn't!

Silent Migraine symptoms include:
• Upset stomach or vomiting
• Hot flashes and chills
• Stuffy or runny nose
• Dizziness or spinning (called vertigo)
• Sore neck or jaw
• Sensitivity to light, sounds, smells, touch, or motion
• Confusion

Aura Migraine symptoms can include:
• Seeing spots, wavy lines, or flashing lights
• Feeling tingling or numbness in your hands, arms, or face

Subtle Migraine symptoms include:
• Constipation
• Mood changes
• Food cravings
• Neck stiffness
• Increased urination
• Even frequent yawning

NO HEADACHE!!!

And, what causes a migraine?

• Hormonal changes like menstruation
• Emotional triggers like stress
• Physical triggers like tiredness
• Dietary triggers like missed, delayed or irregular meals, or dehydration
• Environmental triggers like bright lights
• Some types of medication

I found this really interesting 👍👍😊
