Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Desert Alpine Club

The Desert Alpine Club is one of three ski clubs operating at Tukino ski field on Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand's North Island. From the relaxed to the adventurous, the friends you can meet and the experiences you can have with the Desert Alpine Club can last a lifetime. The Desert Alpine Club's main purpose is to help members enjoy skiing in a friendly, uncrowded club environment. While skiing is at the heart of our activities, we also promote tramping, ski-touring and climbing. The Desert Alpine Club's lodge is at the Tukino Ski Field Village, at an altitude of 1684m. From its position on a ridge the lodge offers views of Waiouru and a broad vista of the Kaimanawa Ranges, to Lake Taupo and Mt Ngauruhoe. Being on the eastern side of Mt Ruapehu, Tukino ski field enjoys relatively calm conditions, sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds. Our modern lodge accommodates up to 30 people. It has its own power generator and uses rain water and melted snow for its water supply. It features:
Well equipped kitchen with two large commercial gas stoves

Comfortable dining and living areas

Good showers

Bunk room accommodation, with 4-6 beds per room

Warm, social fireplace

Friendly, smoke free environment
Lodge life

The Desert Alpine Club has a welcoming and inclusive environment. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring the lodge runs efficiently day-to-day. With a 'many hands make light work' approach; duties such as meal preparation and cleaning are rostered daily and shared by members and non-members alike. Non-members are able to stay at the Desert Alpine Lodge throughout the season (subject to availability). The Tukino Mountain Clubs Association offers special packages that includes accommodation, meals and ski passes. See Ski and Stay Packages for details.

Please Respect the Tukino Access Road

The Tukino 4WD Access Road exists primarily to provide access for skiers, club members, volunteers, and emergency services traveling to and from the Tukino Ski Area facilities.

We love sharing Tukino's unique alpine environment and natural beauty with everyone who visits. Unfortunately, the access road has come under increasing pressure in recent years from recreational 4WD use. While the vast majority of visitors treat the road with respect, a small number of drivers do not, creating significant challenges for our facilities, volunteers, and road maintenance efforts.

Every marker post along the road from State Highway 1 has been installed by volunteers, by hand. The section of road beyond the transmission tower is maintained entirely by Tukino volunteers and funded through the Tukino budget, which is increasingly stretched due to declining ski ticket revenue resulting from inconsistent snow seasons.

The Tukino Access Road is our lifeline. When the road is damaged or becomes difficult to navigate our visitors, volunteers, and emergency services may be unable to safely reach the ski area and village. Following the weekend of 9 August, one of our volunteer ski patrollers became stuck while leaving the mountain because the road had been heavily rutted by aggressive 4WD driving.

We ask everyone using the road to please respect our access road, drive responsibly, and help preserve this vital route for all users.

If you would like to support the ongoing maintenance of the road, please consider making a donation; https://donate.stripe.com/4gw9ABeXieXpggg8ww; Every contribution helps us keep the road safe and accessible for the entire Tukino community.

Please respect our road.

Saturday offered up fantastic skiing. All 3 Tows spinning and some beautiful runs to be had. A great effort from the DA Clubbies getting out there and involved in all aspects of opening the field.
Sunday was slightly less appealing, so a trip to Waiouru for Mike Glyn and Josh to check out the groomer and prepare it for a journey up the hill🤞 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

A little bit of Desert Alpine team work magic repairing and re-erecting the damaged tower for the Aorangi Tow bull wheel. Amazing work by all involved!

Thanks to Josh Hansen for the video mash up!

What a great Opening weekend!
All tows spinning all weekend.
Early season conditions, you definitely didn't want your best skis for this trip, but the snow that was there was perfect and definitely some nice lines and great runs to be had. Desert Alpine Lodge was warm and full with a great bunch of people to be up the mountain with. 👌
