Masters’ week 2026, at the iconic Augusta National, is upon us. We think this is a good time to reflect and appreciate our own golf course – the only course in New Zealand designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie.
Titirangi has its own rolling fairways, contoured bunkers, and undulating greens. Design features (the famous Titirangi bunkers) blend into the natural beauty of the bushland setting, camouflaged and tricking the eye as we negotiate fairways and make our way to the green.
Like Augusta, Titirangi is a ‘second shot golf course’; it requires accuracy rather than length. There are dangerous temptations of risk and reward on every hole; and if you’re out of position it can punish you - we’ve all ‘had a go’ at the hero shot, and then regretted it!
Titirangi is never boring – it provides strong and interesting tests for the scratch golfer, while being fun and playable for the average golfer. Titirangi’s MacKenzie design always keeps you on your toes.
Of course, it isn’t perfect - Titirangi isn’t Augusta, we don’t have the resources (money!) that Augusta has – we have to prioritise our projects, but we do our very best to maintain its ‘MacKenzieness’ and reflect what we believe Alister MacKenzie would do if he were with us.
Thanks to our course superintendents, course convenors and Boards past and present, we stay true to MacKenzie’s design intentions when refining and modernizing the course. Our consulting architect, and MacKenzie expert, Clyde Johnson oversees our larger course developments; and our savvy greens staff continually tweak mowing lines and shape and sharpen green surrounds. We’re excited to see the results of the recent redevelopment of the iconic 13th hole, part of Titirangi’s Amen Corner.
As we look forward to this week’s Masters tournament at Augusta, we enjoy and appreciate our own MacKenzie gem - Titirangi.
