While we have all been reaching in the drawers and finding the winter woolies Ben Grant has been in Belgium in 30 degree days umpiring at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro-League.

Over the last week Ben has umpired some of the powerhouse men's and women's teams in world hockey being Belgium, Spain, Pakistan, China and Argentina.

Great stuff Ben - enjoy the last few days of the warmer weather, currently 2 degrees here in Timaru!

With two weeks to go until our Under 18 Men and Women head away to the National Under 18 tournament both teams headed south today to take on Otago in Oamaru.

These matches are great preparation for the teams and coaches in what will be a big week of hockey in Palmerston North and Tauranga starting on July 5th.

Big thanks to Ryhan and Shaun from Otago Hockey Association and Malfy from Hockey South Canterbury for giving up their Sunday to umpire these games.

Great to see the O'H Yes Coffee & Catering 'Flag Bearer' recognised by Sport Canterbury - South Canterbury for his volunteer work on Tuesday nights at hockey.

It wouldn't quite be the same if we didn't have Eric there each Tuesday to keep everyone on their toes!

It takes all sorts of volunteers to make sport happen. Shout out to Eric for regularly volunteering with O'H Yes Coffee & Catering ☕ Keeping our sporting whānau caffeinated on our cold winter nights. Be sure to say hi next time you see him outside Aorangi Stadium 🙌

If you've ever watched a hockey game at the Trust Aoraki Hockey Centre, cheered from the sideline or seen a child fall in love with our sport, there's a good chance a volunteer made that moment possible.

This week is National Volunteer week and it's time to celebrate and thank those who make our sport happen.

Volunteers come from all corners of our community with volunteer committee and board members, South Canterbury Hockey Turf Trust members, coaches, managers, umpires, fun sticks helpers, parents, caregivers, van drivers, the BBQ crew of organisers, the BBQ chefs, the BBQ pickup driver and everyone working behind the scenes - thank you 👏

Whether you're coaching/managing teams, opening and closing the turf, maintaining facilities, helping transport players, serving on a committee at your local club, or simply stepping in wherever you're needed, your contribution makes a difference.

🏆 The Div 1 Women's Challenge Trophy changed hands again yesterday with the Geraldine Women beating Craighead 4-1.

With 6 weeks of games completed it's been pass the trophy with the Geraldine Women taking it off 2025 holders the Cambridge Whales in Week 1, Eastern then taking it off Geraldine, Craighead then taking it off Eastern and now it's back in the hands of the Geraldine ladies - Epic!

The Div 1 Women's competition winners this year could be any one of the four teams with very few, if any points separating the teams.

Congratulations to the Geraldine ladies 👏
