Thames Cricket Review 27.3.22

On a beautiful day for cricket Sunday 27th March saw a repeat final between both Thames teams. The Dynamites vs the Detonaters. Last year's champions Dynamites keen to defend their title and a very fanciful Detonaters team keen on finals revenge. With the teams sitting at 1-1 on games faced against each other and a big 2nd round win for the Detonaters against the Dynamites fresh on everyone's minds. Both Thames captains headed to the pitch at 10.50am for the coin toss. Narinder the Detonaters captain and Scott for the Dynamites. Narinder getting the rub of the coin winning the toss and choosing to bat first hoping to set a big target. The Dynamites team huddle learning of the toss result happy to bowl first. The Detonaters started the innings off with G Singh and D Curnow being openers. Parminder and Jatinder opening the Dynamites bowling attack. 4 balls into the first over Parminder bowling a ball for G Singh to hit, only to hit straight to the fielder Jas Aujla to take a screamer out for 0. This bought S Singh to the crease. S Singh known for his big hitting being asked to slog a few and upset the Dynamites opening bowlers lines. However Jatinder replying with a peach on his last ball of his 2nd over inviting a shot to S Singh caught out for 3. A beautiful catch coming for Parminder. This had the Detonaters at 15/2 after 4 overs. D Bull arriving to the crease. Rotating strike well between the 2 David's at the crease until a fantastic catch from S MacKenzie off great bowling from Dunc removed D Curnow out for a hard fought 18. Big hitting Tejender Singh came out to bat. A monster boundary from Tejender had the 1st boundary of the innings being recorded for the Detonaters. After scoring at a better rate than balls faced a big mix up with D Bull and Tejender Singh had Tejender run out for 10. A huge throw from Simran clean striking the stumps at the bowlers end. This had M Singh enter the innings to partner a set D Bull. In the 18th over M Singh unfortunate to put up a skier for Dunc to take a nice catch removing M Singh out for 4 off tight bowling lines of Jeremys bowling. This had the Detonaters in a bad way 19 overs in and a score of 77/5. J Singh then arrived to the crease. Jeremy continuing to bowl nice lines taking a fantastic caught and bowled removing J Singh for 2. W Andrews the next man in scoring freely and steadily upping the run rate. D Bull making it through to the mandatory retirement facing his allotted 50 balls faced. This had 2 dangerous batsmen at the crease with P Kumar and W Andrews. A fantastic piece of fielding by David Callander throwing the ball to Dunc to remove danger man W Andrews run out for 12. Narinder heading out to partner Perry. A few runs being added before P Kumar put up a big shot only to be caught out by Scott Mackenzie off his own bowling. Sidd Rana then arrived to the crease and trying for a big score, unfortunately watching as Narinder got caught out by Manpreet from S Mackenzie's bowling out for 9. This had D Bull re-enter the innings keen to get a few more runs towards the total. Sidd however getting caught out for 4 runs a good catch by Manpreet off superb bowling from Parminder. This ending the Detonaters innings a score of 126 all out in the 29th over. The Dynamites contributing 44 extra runs through wides and no balls being bowled. With the innings break in force a team meeting for the Dynamites knowing the game was not over and required the 127 runs to win. Those 127 runs would not be easy against the competition best bowling line up of the Detonaters. When play finally resumed the Dynamites sent Dunc and Tejinder to open things up. The Detonaters gave the ball to competition highest wicket taker Satnum Singh. By ball 5 T Singh heading back to the pavilion out for 0, a good catch from Maninder Singh. This had S Mackenzie enter the innings. After S Mackenzie getting set Satnum putting up a huge lbw appeal, finger of the umpire raised, S Mackenzie out for 5. The Dynamites at a precarious position of 9/2. This had big hitting Parminder arrive to the crease. Both Dynamites batsmen scoring good runs getting through to drinks break. A few overs after drinks had Dunc retire out for the 3rd time facing 50 balls scoring a nice score of 22. Codi Mackenzie arrived to partner Parminder, only for Codi to put up a good catch taken from Sidd off quality Maninder Singhs bowling. Parminder then also being forced to retire out after facing his 50 balls scoring a very fine 44 runs, 3 big boundaries scored during his innings. This had 2 new batsmen at the crease with Jeremy and Manpreet. Unfortunately for Jeremy (0) unable to get off the mark being judged lbw off some fantastic Maninder Singh bowling. Simran Singh headed out to partner Manpreet. After scoring a nice 13 runs Simran getting caught and bowled out by Perry Kumar. Jas Aujla heading to the crease whacking 2 nice boundaries with himself and Manpreet getting the winning runs. The Dynamites winning the trophy for a second straight year going back to back champions. A big mention of player of the day has to go to Parminder for his all round fantastic showing. Well done big man. A special mention also needs to go to big Trevor for sacrificing his Sunday to umpire a very good game. Thank you Trevor. To both Thames teams what a fantastic game played with both skills on offer and the all round fantastic sportsmanship on display. Until next year

Sunday 20 March had the Thames dynamites travelling away to Whitianga to face the mighty Whitianga team. Again Scott won the toss with his magic two sided coin and choose to bat first. With overcast conditions the only major weather conditions were it was bloody windy 🌬️. With a team reshuffle Scott and David went out to bat 1st. 3rd over in and David (2) being bowled out. Jatinder arriving at #3. Jatinder and Scott scoring well before Jatinder (11) getting caught out. Heading into the 10th over Scott (20) getting caught going for a big shot. Parminder and Codi now at the crease. Codi watching some big Parminder hitting. Codi (5) unlucky to be caught out. Manpreet (54) arrived to the crease only for Parminder having to retire after facing 50 balls. Jeremy (1) arriving to the crease only for a batsmen mix up a nightmare runout. Simran (6) being caught out. Dunc (11) came out playing 2 big shots only for the 3rd big shot played being caught out. Surya Dev walked out and then walked away out for a golden duck. Jassu (1) getting caught out. This allowed Parminder to re enter the innings and put the innings to bed a whopping 67 not out. A big target of 250 set. Whitianga needing 251 to win started their innings nicely before Jatinder on bowling debut bowled A Roach (1). S Kumar (16) getting a decent start before being caught out off manpreets bowling. M Kurtz (4) having a run out nightmare being sold down the river. A great return throw from Codi to Manpreet and bails removed. Unsure (4) being bowled out from Dunc another on bowling debut. Marty (6) being bowled out by Codi. P Rawat (0) run out 1st ball. Q Smith (2) edging off to the keeper (dunc) off good bowling from Jeremy. S Harrison (2) out caught by the MacKenzie duo Codi catching and Scotts bowling. D Brownlow (0) being undone from great bowling of Jeremy. Scott then bowled the 19th over before throwing the ball at David for his bowling debut, David waiting 2 years to bowl. A very good 1st ball bowled followed by 2 balls being no balled as one rolled past the batsmens foot similar to the Australian underarm incident. The other double bouncing down the pitch. Trying to re adjust the 2nd legal ball flew away to the boundary Whitiangas Fabians 1st career boundary a nice 4 runs scored. David's 3rd legal ball swung in late and went thru the batsman straight into middle stump, David claiming his 1st bowling wicket. Thus the game over Whitianga all out for 125. This result for the Dynamites see them jump up to top spot of the overall standings pushing the Thames Detonaters down 1 spot to #2. This now wraps up the round robin stage and has a repeat of last year's epic grandfinal pitting two quality Thames teams against each other on Sunday 27 March (weather permitting) at Rhodes park Thames.

Sunday 6th of March had two major competition matches take place at Rhodes park pitting teams and 3rd and 4th equal against each other. #3 Thames dynamite vs #1 equal Tairua Mantarays and #1 equal Thames detonaters vs #4 equal Tairua stingrays. Stay tuned to see if a big upset happens. Firstly starting with detonaters vs stingrays game. The detonaters won the toss and Narinder said we are batting. Wade fresh from a 3 game retirement opting to put his hand up and already being kitted up to bat said I'm opening chief and I'm batting guptill styles today. Gurvir stood back and watched Wade go crazy. Gurvir first man out after not many overs and over 50 runs in the bank Gurvir being caught out for 18. Perry arriving at 3 whacking a big 6, out a few balls later for 15 stumped. Wade aka guptill still firing at the other end 10 boundaries in total 7 4s and 3 6s. Wade aka guptill finally being undone on his 44th ball being caught out on the boundary for 73 trying to push towards his maiden ton. Kamal and Maninder the 2 batsmen at the crease grinding out the runs contributing a good partnership before both men being caught out trying to up the run rate Kamal for 9 and Maninder for 33. Narinder unfortunately getting bowled for 6. Joban and Harpreet the next to enter. Harpreet being tempted into a shot being caught out for 2. Satnum who doesn't stop swinging the bat unfortunate to be caught by a great catch out for 2 also. Sidd entered and suffered a runout for only 2 runs as well. Gurpreet facing the same fate run out a few balls later for 1 run. Leaving Joban stranded on 14*. A total of 206 on the board. Tairua being asked to score 207 to win. Things did not start well for the stingrays and 2 wickets were down before 8 runs were on the board. G Crowe being the first to fall, out for 4 caught by Maninder off Satnums bowling. L Smith also being caught by Maninder off Sidds bowling for 1. H Crowe and a new batter going under the name of unsure, putting a decent partnership together before Gurpreet caught H Crowe (11) off Maninders bowling. Perry then removes unsures middle stump out for a fantastic 37. O Singh and G Keyte partnered the crease. O Singh was dismissed for a golden duck and then G Keyte got caught out for 1 good catch taken from Perry from Kamals bowling. G Kilpatrick and C Crowe got together before Kilpatrick (14) was caught by Narinder off tight bowling of Perry. C Crowe (7) then getting caught out by Gurpreet off Wades bowling (yes guptill bowls as well, normally only in tests and not the short game but hey). Another unsure was debut (6) before his middle stump was broken by Perry. C Collins and B Collins being the last 2 Tairua batsmen at the crease. B Collins being run out in over 24 for zilch game over for Tairua stingrays all out for 113. Detonaters winning the match by a whopping 93 runs. A nice win keeping themselves atop the leaderboard.

This then takes us to the next game #1 equal Tairua Mantarays vs #3 Thames Dynamites. This was the game that had plenty on offer and both teams needed this result to go their way. Who would win this match? The coin toss was done and won by Dynamites captain Scott who again chose to bat first. Sharminder and Jatinder being the first batsmen to the crease. Both batsmen settled in nicely before S Clarke caught a absolute screamer from Sharminder (6) taking a fantastic caught and bowled. Scott (3) arriving at #3 only to have N Clarke remove middle stump. Dunk on debut for the dynamite arrived and partnered Jatinder and both played exception canvassing the ball to all areas of the park. Both Jatinder(38) and Dunk(27) being forced to retire after facing the competition regulated 50 balls. A fantastic partnership vital towards allowing the remaining dynamite batsmen to score a good total in the back end of the innings. Simran and Codi arriving to the crease and Simran not taking long to adjust to the shear pace of B Arnel. B Arnel getting dispatched out of the park. A poor spectators car being hit 🎯. However a fantastic 6 runs scored. Codi following suit a few balls later smacking a 6. After about 5 minutes the next ball was finally bowled. Codi and Simran remaining calm both scoring freely. Simran (18) getting run out. Codi finally playing 1 big shot to many caught out for a whopping 33 off just 14 balls. Manpreet and Parminder coming together. Manpreet watching a fine innings of clean hitting at the bowlers end Parminder smashing a fine 29 off just 10 balls before missing the 11th ball bowled out. Jasaujla (1*) and Manpreet (15*) taking the innings to a close 30 overs done 231/5 setting the more than capable Tairua Mankarays 232 to win. S Clarke (29) and C Sanders-Edwards (22) got things off nicely for the Tairua team before Codi took a smart catch to remove S Clarke from Sharminders bowling. David Callander taking a screamer at point removing in form batsmen C Sanders-Edwards (22) again off Sharminders bowling. W Rodgers came out to bat and was unlucky to get runout without facing a ball. B Arnel deciding it was his turn to bat. David Clarke then hit his own wicket, out for just 1 run. B Finn and N Clarke facing the last few balls before 30 overs up posting just 192/9 losing the match by 39 runs. Dynamites taking the huge win. The win changes the leaderboard significantly with the Mantarays dropping 2 spots to be placed #3 on the board. The Dynamites climbing to #2 spot and Detonaters clear #1 spot. Dynamites are again at home at Rhodes park next weekend vs Stingrays and the Detonaters are travelling to a grass wicket at Morrinsville.

28/02/2022

On Sunday 27th February had both Thames teams travelling away to face quality opposition teams away in the all serious Thames Valley Cricket competition. The Thames detonaters faced Waihi Gold Diggers at Waihi and thanks to the fantastic Bevan from Waihi already doing a fantastic game recap story for game day, not more can be said into the game other than a good win to the Thames detonaters, keeping themselves in top position on the overall leader board.

The Thames Dynamites travelling over to the fortress of Whangamata to face the mighty Whangamata Warriors. What a game, a result being decided in the final over of the match show casing some excellent cricketing skill on display by both teams. Dynamites won the toss and chose to bat first on a damp morning pitch, intent on setting a good target. Things started slow for dynamites grinding away negating good quality swing bowling being peppered with the ball by the Warriors opening bowling duo. After grinding away for a hard fought 9 Jatender putting a catch up out caught. Jasaujila on debut unlucky getting clean bowled by a snorter of a yorker out for 0. Scott arriving to the crease only to be undone early for 1 edging out to slip fielder. Parminder arrived to partner little brother Shaminder who remained poised even after watching wickets fall around him, grinding away putting the bad balls away to the boundary. Parminder unlucky to put a faint edge thru to the wicketkeeper scoring a solid 23, good sportsmanship on show walking off admitting he hit it. Jeremy came out for a good innings of 9 before putting up a skier which was superbly caught in the outfield after what seemed like eternity to come back to earth. Codi came out next putting a few balls out of the park. Shaminder having to retire after facing 50 balls (competition rules) scoring a fantastic 39*. Simran came out to partner Codi until Simrans luck ran out being bowled for 15. Wayne after a short retirement of the game came out next looking to go from ball 1 being clean bowled off stump up ended, returning back to the batting dugout. Gurpreet another on debut helping Codi anchor the back end of the batting innings getting the dynamites to a competitive score of 186/7 after 30 overs. The Whangamata Warriors innings starting off in better weather conditions then the 1st innings with sunshine and a nicely dried up outfield the dynamites knew they had to field well and bowl consistent to take the game to the Warriors. Shaminder and Parminder the reliable opening bowling duo bowling with speed and generating major swing making scoring runs near impossible at times for the Warriors opening batsmen. The big break thru coming via a Shaminder bumper getting MNN Norrie top edging caught out for 3 a great catch from Gurpreet. Parminder keeping N Johnson in check until a fantastic caught and bowled for Parminder, N Johnson out for 6. Matty Aro arriving to the crease clearing the boundary with ease dispatching the odd bad ball. M Forhad putting a nice catch up for Jeremy off Parminders bowling out for 3. Mandeep being run out by a strong return via Sharminders arm allowing Jeremy to whip the bails off at the bowlers end only to be run over in the process however earning Mandeeps wicket out for 11. Matty Aro looking to hang around til drinks finally being undone last ball before drinks clean bowled middle stump up ended by Jeremy out for 21. C Kranenburg arrived to the crease after drinks and steady the Warriors side with the assistance of Meet Patel. A fantastic batting partnership threatened to take the game towards a warriors victory. After a fantastic strangle bowling eating up balls faced, C Kranenburgs innings over after facing 50 balls retired on 32* a fantastic innings. W Everton came and went bowled for 3 by Sharminder. Johno W falling trap to a fantastic ball bowled by Codi returning a soft catch back to Codi out for 8. Meet Patel playing a superb innings swatting 36 runs off 30 balls took the game to the final over. With just 14 runs required for victory the Whangamata supporter base confident on getting the result. The Thames dynamites however had a plan and it worked out perfectly, a strong boundary save and return tho by Codi but with still plenty to do David gathered and won the foot race to remove Meet Patels bails runout for 36. R Smith and D Smith were left to face the 5 remaining balls unable to score any further runs with R Smith(4) out final ball run out by David. The Thames Dynamites winning by 12 runs putting them in 4th position currently overall however with 2 games still in hand.
