The Kaimai Challenge brings together teams of six (two Premiers, two Intermediates and two Primaries) in a series of croquet tournaments over summer. Each tournament has a unique six-game format of singles and pairs, where the pairs are across different grades. This is hugely valuable for developing players picking up strategy and technique tips as they play with and against the Premiers.

With the competition complete it was time for a social game and prizegiving hosted by the Te Aroha Terminators at our beautiful Domain lawns at the foot of the mountain.

Check out the action in the video clip, and our winners in the photos.

Our thanks to Denise and her Triton Hearing team for sponsoring the tournament.

Winter Series Round 2 - the results!

The club recently welcomed 40 players from around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty back to our beautiful Domain lawns for Round 2 of our Winter Series.

Everyone was stunned by the ethereal quality of the light that bathed the dew-laden courts as play got underway. There's something very special about playing in a Winter Series under the mountain.

Check out the attached photos for a teaser - the full complement can be found in the Gallery on our website: https://www.sporty.co.nz/tearohacroquet/Gallery

Our special thanks to Four Square Te Aroha for sponsoring this tournament.

And congratulations to the winners! Can you repeat your efforts for Round 3 on Tue 30 June? Or will another team step up to the podium? Stay tuned...

Club members were busy over May knitting 128 peggy squares. Nice work, team!

So were they to keep our mallets warm and protected? Perhaps a scarf to keep out the chills of winter play?

Something much better – we were pleased to get behind Harcourt’s Allison Ward’s initiative to create peggy squares to keep premmie babies warm and comforted. The squares are sewn together to make colourful blankets and distributed to Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

We were delighted to hand over our peggy squares to Allison Ward Harcourts Te Aroha, and our thanks too to Aroha Quilts – our first port of call for needles and wool.

Winter Series - Round 2

Coming up this Tuesday 26 May, the Te Aroha Croquet Club is looking forward to welcoming 40 players from around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty back to our beautiful Domain lawns for our Winter Series, and the weather looks like it's going to play ball too.

Competition was fierce in Round 1 held at the end of April. Will our winners prevail again, or will we have other pairs stepping up to the podium?

Check out the April action and winners in the video, with further pics on our website at https://www.sporty.co.nz/tearohacroquet/Gallery

Really disappointing to see more mindless vandalism as club members turned up to play this morning. As opposed to most clubs we can't fence off our lawns as they're part of our beautiful Te Aroha Domain for the public to enjoy.

We suspect the damage was caused by a fat-tyred eBike doing skids, donuts and wheelies. Certainly intentional as the lawns are clearly marked out.

If you see anyone causing damage, please take photos of both the culprit and the damage, have a word to move them on if it's safe, and PM us so we can get onto it as soon as possible.

Tuesday 5 May wasn’t a normal club day. Before play could get underway we had a very special person to honour with a morning tea. Happy birthday Joan – congratulations on reaching your 96th and still going strong!

Joan remains a formidable club player – while the lack of strength in her shoulder means she can’t quite get her ball the length of the court, once she’s there she’s deadly around the hoop. Underestimate her at your peril!

🌟 Huge Thanks to the Bobby Foundation — and Our Incredible Members! 🌟

Earlier this year every one of our 30 members was surprised with a brand new club shirt — a small way to say thanks for the amazing spirit that keeps our club thriving. Whenever help is needed on the lawns, irrigation, hosting visitors, the schools programme, or catering, our members don’t hesitate.

And a special shout out to our sponsor, the Bobby Foundation. Their support made the shirts — and even our fantastic branded marquee — possible. That marquee has become a lifesaver during tournaments, giving shelter to 40 visiting players and our hardworking volunteers.

To the Bobby Foundation and to our members: thank you. You’re the reason our club feels like family.

As per the whiteboard instructions we had a bit of fun on Easter Saturday. Club shirts stayed in the wardrobe while we let our imaginations run wild with eggs, chooks, rabbit ears and otherwise outrageous costumes, especially with prizes to be won.

And congratulations Gerry who took out best dressed, and Pauline for best hat - as if you didn't have enough chocolate already!

A big shout-out to our club members who recently welcomed two groups of Japanese students and introduced them to our favourite game!

Te Aroha College was very appreciative of how we looked after their international students, and complimented us on creating such an encouraging environment to the point where the students felt welcomed and cared for from the moment they arrived.

To recap for those who weren’t able to make it – the students were from two different schools in Osaka — Sakurazuka last week, and Seifu Nankai this week. They come to New Zealand for a seven-day cultural and schooling experience. During their time at Te Aroha College, they join classes with their Kiwi Buddies and take part in a range of activities like flax weaving, outdoor education, and kiwi cookery.

Croquet was completely new to them. They loved the game and the language barrier didn’t get in the way of their enjoyment. They could relax, join in fully, and simply have fun.

Thanks again to our club members who made their experiences and memories so special.

What a magic day on the Domain! The sun was shining, the music was booming, the food trucks were roaring, there were all manner of crafts to peruse, but most importantly club members were introducing those wanting to "Have a go" to our favourite game.

It didn't take long for newcomers to get into the swing, and to realise that hitting a ball through a hoop is a bit trickier than it looks at first glance - particularly when your opponent has just whacked your ball to the other side of the court!

But the big grins on everyone's faces said it all, and judging by the feedback we may well see some of them back on club days.
