In short, scorers are an essential part of target rifle shooting. It's a big job that sometimes isn't taken as seriously as it should be. A little chat here - a giggle or three over there... A missed moment - what's the harm? It's just an afternoon on range.
We all have to do it: the sport could not function safely, fairly, or competitively otherwise. It doesn't seem important until you're the competitor who's disadvantaged. Just because it's on Hexta or Shotmarker etc. doesn't mean you do nothing for 10-15 minutes. We all expect a great scorer but seem to have a mind-snap when we step up to score. Yes, we are all guilty at some point.
FOCUS ON THE JOB AT HAND
The scorer plays a crucial role in ensuring the sport is fair, safe, and credible. Their importance includes:
π Accuracy and fairness: The scorer still needs to watch everything going on in that lane. There's a V bull on the target - if you were watching, you shouldn't have to ask, "Did you fire????" Were you watching??? Was it a crossfire from another lane? Zoooops. That's a wake-up call that you weren't watching your competitor nor taking it seriously.
π Safety assurance: Pay close attention to what is happening on the mound - your lane. Things happen - there are rules. Do the right thing. Did you notice that misfire? Is someone in the 'wrong place' - stepping over your competitor's feet as they set up? Is the neighbour's foot ready to tap your competitor???
π Supporting performance: A reliable scorer allows the competitor to focus fully on what they need to do. Most don't mind the peanut gallery chat - but... some do. They like it quiet - they don't enjoy the smug laughter at a 4 or a miss. Their heart sinks and it's made worse.
We're all wired differently - don't assume it's always the right time or place to be a jokerster.
Equally, everyone has to deal with what's happening next door. Sometimes it gets noisy, RO's are called... Tell your competitor it's all OK - it has nothing to do with them. Manage the situation, don't become part of it. It's tough enough at the best of times - let's give your lane the best chance they can.
π Don't be the one who gets it wrong.
The scorer in many ways has one of the most important jobs on range! Wouldn't you expect the best when you're down on the mound?
