Greerton Quick Bowler Peter Anderson Takes Centre Stage in the GCC Rich History

The winter cricket break is an ideal time to look back at the GCC players that made their mark in NZC Major and Minor Association cricket.

Earlier this year we covered off the sterling achievements of MJW Wright. This edition of β€œTracing the Rich History of Our Club’, we move on to a bowler who made batsman quake in their boots when he charged in to release his leather hand grenades.

Peter Anderson (pictured), was a long-time contemporary of Mike Wright, at the Greerton CC, Bay of Plenty representative, and played seven first class games for Northern Districts.

Anderson was a fiery pace bowler, who took no prisoners, when on fire with the red cricket ball. His seven ND First-Class fixtures, produced twenty bowling scalps, with best bowling figures of five wickets at a cost of 38 runs.

Greerton’s 50th Jubilee booklet made serious mention of his ND success, and also portrayed his GCC achievements, where he took eleven six wicket bags including three eight wicket hauls. PS Anderson sits in second (8/26), third (8/29) and fourth place (8/37) on the club's premier best wicket hauls, behind Eric Paton (8/15) and Richard Harris (8/22).

Not so well known were his outstanding performances in the Bay of Plenty representative uniform.

Peter Anderson earned BOPCA Representative Player No 319, when debuted against Northland at the Harry Barker Reserve in Gisborne, on the 28th November 1976. The Greerton quick bowler played 22 matches, in the days where Bay of Plenty sometime played as little as three two-day games in a season.

Andersons Bay of Plenty career was spread over six seasons from 1976/77 until the 1982-82 cricket year. He took a remarkable 66 wickets, which averages out three wickets a game, which included four highly coveted five-wicket hauls. He was also a handy lower order batsman compiling 128 runs at an average of 18.29, with a best of 30 not out.

His first five wicket bag came at the annual ND minor association tournament in Gisborne, during 1976, where he grabbed best bowing figures of 5/32 against arch-rivals Hamilton, as the Waikato side were bowled out for just 119. His performance saw Bay of Plenty take first innings honours from the game.

The following season, Peter was rewarded with some tight bowling to pick up five wickets at a cost of 5/58, in a Hawke Cup elimination match with Hawkes Bay in the β€˜Other Bay’.

Seddon Park in Hamilton was the venue of his third 5-fa in returning 5/67 in Hamilton’s first innings. Earlier in the game Peter had posted his highest Bay of Plenty score of 30 not out, batting at ten.

Anderson’s last season saw the Bay quick earn BOPCA honours board mark of distinction for the fourth time, with five wickets, in his teams two-day encounter with Midland at Albert Park in Te Awamutu. Midlands were removed for 291 with PS Anderson recorded as taking 5/96.

B Grade Originals There at the GCC Start

While the Greerton Cricket Club β€˜A’ Grade team hogs much of the clubs early spotlight, the β€œB” grade side were a very important component of the GCC, first season, playing in the Tauranga Cricket Association competitions.

The β€˜B’ Graders were an integral part of the social fabric of the GCC and also proved cover for the first team with work and injury absences.

1974/75 B Grade Players
Roy Brown (Captain) Keith Lowry, Brian Swale, Peter Jamieson, Colin Henderson, Terry Sharplin, Rod Cameron, Rocky Bestwick, Don Harvey, John McWilliam, Bruce Fletcher, Peter Smyth – also Peter Jamieson Jnr, Murray Jamieson, Dean Morrisey, Colin Murray, Keith McLean, Geoff Oliver, Graham Ramshaw, Graham Ryan, Jim Stewart.

1974/75 Annual Report

B Grade - This team was captained by Roy Brown and was unlucky not to finish higher than third out of the seven teams playing in the competition. This was due to a few games at the start of the season, being lost by narrow margins, because the team was short of players. Then as the season progressed we were at times embarrassed with numbers of players, and some had to take their turn at standing down.

The highest score of the season went to Keith Lowry, with a fine display of batting for 70 not out against Albion. Keith also fielded well throughout the season, as did Brian Swale, Peter Jamieson and Colin Henderson. Towards the end of the season Terry Sharplin got more than his share of catches.

Consistent batting became a habit with Colin Henderson, Peter Jamieson and Roy Brown. The following players scored half-centuries: Keith Lowry, Rod Cameron, Rocky Bestwick and Peter Jamieson.

Bowling honours went to Don Harvey and Colin Henderson. Whenever these two were used as opening bowlers, they formed a rather formidable pair as far as the opposition were concerned. Both Don (42) and Colin (42) captured over forty wickets each, which in any grade of cricket is a fine personal tally. John McWilliam showed promise as a good off-spin bowler. The wicket- keeping was shared between Bruce Fletcher and Peter Smythe.

Keith Lowry and Roy Brown were selected for the Tauranga B Grade representative team.
