Sad but happy!
It is with some reluctance that we have sold our larger boat ‘Valda M’ to Tom and Alita Mayne. I say sad, because we had all fallen in love with the beautiful old girl since bringing her down from Whangarei a few year back.
The good news is that the very experienced Tom and Alita will be continuing to operate Valda as a full time charter boat. Those who have been out with us on Valda will be aware that she is a classic historic boat in outstanding condition and set up to fish 8 anglers in comfort with full on board facilities.

Note: With this damn treatment I’m having my health remains a bit up and down. Just a bit too up and down to commit to taking any charters on our smaller Senator just yet. I will be in touch again as soon as this changes!

A long overdue update! It’s incredibly frustrating, but I’m still under Dr’s orders not to take any charters for a little while longer.
I have managed to sneak out for a few family only trips when the weather has allowed. We have been very privileged to have stray-lined some very nice snapper and enjoyed some incredible sunsets. Nothing like enjoying fresh sashimi and glass or two at this time of the day.
Many thanks to those who have sent best wishes and also to those who are patiently waiting to get out!

I’m a bit gutted (err…possibly literally!) that I have to go into hospital on the 20th December for surgery. Not a great time of the year to be out of commission, but hopefully back into it towards the end of January.
My apologies to those clients who I have failed to get out pre-Christmas, while waiting for a weather window to appear.
We did get a brief trip in last week focusing on the squid again. It was awesome fun and they were again very obliging, so do give it a go if you get a chance. Fresh calamari is now rapidly becoming my favourite seafood!
Season’s Greetings to everyone, have an awesome holiday and catch up again in 2022.

On a recent squiding trip we dropped a light in the water, as you do. Initially the usual krill appeared, quickly followed by thousands of these rather cute baby jellyfish.

Perfect weather on Saturday for a charter organised some while back by Jakalah and Chad Trask for Royce’s 30th birthday.
With six mates, plus a couple dad’s to ensure fair play the competition was on. I’m not quite sure as to the accuracy of the referee. There were 35 fish - mostly snapper and tarakihi - on the scorecard, but half a dozen less in the cooler at the end of the day!
In any event the biggest blue moki I have seen for many years, either above or below the water, took out the prize.
You guys sure kept me both busy and entertained all day, thanks!

Yet another great day out with Sean Wood and clients from Creative Kitchens and Interiors. A double celebration with them again taking out yet another 'Most Trusted' business award.
The kingfish were a little jig shy early morning, but eventually came out to play. Whilst we waited for them to sound the dinner gong, some solid tarakihi, many in the 1.5kg plus range, plus the odd snapper (red and gold) and pink maomao more than kept the crew occupied.
Glassy sea conditions as you can see!

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say the last 10 days or so have been a drama!
I was just eying up what looked like some spectacular weather to get various overdue clients out for a fish, when I was carted into hospital for an emergency operation. Fortunately, I’m still alive to write this, but there will inevitably be some disruption to normal service over the summer months and I will liaise with all my regulars regarding this.
It was a relief to end the week with a quick 24 hour trip to Tuhua with my favourite girls. The pohutukawa are just starting to bloom and the birdsong was as full on as ever out there.
In what was a very laid back trip, I was chuffed to baptise my new squiding rod, a Diawa Emeraldas 83ML. It really did cast like a magic wand, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. The Tuhua (broad) squid were solid fish as was a nice arrow squid we managed to extract from a very aggressive shoal that made a brief appearance. Anyone who squid fishes will know of the devastation the ink can cause and cleaning these the next day was, as usual, ‘interesting’. No those aren’t gloves in the pictures!
A small, but exceptionally plump, kingfish caught on the way home was a neat bonus.

Whenever there is mention of wind from the east in the forecast we end up with unpleasant conditions ex Tauranga. The wave period drops down to around 6 seconds and that equals short choppy conditions. At the time of posting this, there is an average wave height of 1.5m (max 2.6m) at A buoy at 6.3 seconds…not nice!
This has given me the chance to catch up on an overdue report from last weekend. On the Saturday, Vishaal and colleagues had a pretty spectacular day on the water with us. Everyone boated several kingfish, including Manpreet who hadn’t ever been on a boat smaller than the Cook Straight ferry, let alone been fishing before! We didn’t break any records, but Wynard’s rugby ball shaped fish was in stunning condition,. Then the sharks appeared, and you just have to move on.
Following the pretty hot kingfish session, the table fish then obliged with ample snapper (red and golden), tarakihi and Joshneel also scored a nice John Dory. 50-65m was the magic depth. Interestingly the quality of fishing dramatically reduced in the afternoon. Still unsure if the was a ‘bit time’ thing or down to us missing the new marks we visited!
For those with cabin fever to the north and east of us you have my ongoing sympathy. Hopefully not long now before you get a green or amber light to get out there, not that I have a clue what this weird traffic light system means.

Excellent fishing at the weekend, except for a few attempted deep drops on Sunday morning that produced zip!
Fortunately this was but a slight blip, with the deeper reef fishing produced a steady stream of tarakihi, large 'pannie' snapper, pink maomao, cod and golden snapper.
Mike had the catch of the day, a reasonably rare 'variant' species of pink maomao with spectacular colour.

Frustrating forecasts are restricting charters at the moment, but we have managed a couple of inshore trips over the last few days.
The silversides (tarakihi) have been the main target and have moved closer inshore.
In addition to the silversides we have also picked up the odd snapper, gurnard and cod, with Grahame Espie having the catch of the week. He demonstrated outstanding patience landing a plump 80cm kingfish on a very light tarakihi rig.

Sunday must have been the busiest that I have ever seen Tauranga’s Sulphur Point boat ramp!
I write this with apologies for AUK clients who must really be getting cabin favour by now, but the fishing was awesome!
Sean and team from “Creative Kitchens and Interiors” had excellent sport with some solid winter kingfish. We also added some nice tarakihi. That was when we could get a bait to the silversides through the prolific golden snapper.
By way of bonus, what I believe was a small Bryde's whale spent at least 20 minutes 'buzzing' around and under the boat while we were jigging. I must remember to carry the GoPro at all times!
By way of a message to several local clients who are waiting to get out with us, I will be in touch as soon as a suitable weather window appears

Just worried I may have exceeded the 20 finfish rule after trying to count the eyes! 😂
