Just downright removing everything will not help you.

It teaches you one thing about health.

That in order to get what you want, you need to remove every ounce of joy from the food you eat in order to get results.

F**K THAT.

Identify the variables you need to control that will help you to improve.

More veges.
More fruit.
More protein.
Portion control.
More home cooking.
Less takeaways.

There are hundreds of variables that you can improve before turning to a soul sucking diet that requires you to eat so incredibly rigid.

Your health is more the abs, the weight and the lifts.

It is a process of mental change that results in a physical transformation.

If you really want to get healthy then address your lifestyle, your habits, your choices, your routines and watch what happens.

You can get physical results by making sharp changes but you won’t stick to them. It’s happened before.

Or

You can commit to a process of development that lets you make consistent progress over time despite the challenges that life presents.

Are you happy?

Someone asked me this last night, I replied yes, stressed but happy.

I then turned the question back to them.

They said, no.

I asked two follow up questions.

1. What are you gonna do about it?
2. How can I help?

I asked them in that order for a reason. Much like health, happiness really only works if you do.

You might think that it is your right as a human to just be happy but happiness is created.

It is a product of what we do, who we surround ourself with and the choices we make.

Much like health, I can support you in finding happiness but I can’t do the work for you.

You still have to do that.

You can focus on calories, lose weight and still eat like an asshole.⁣

The word nutrition comes from the Latin word 𝙉𝙪𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙧𝙚 which means to feed or to nourish. ⁣

Nourishment requires more than calories, it requires quality nutrients to ensure that the body has what it needs to function and then add to that whatever it is you want to do on top. ⁣

Be it performance related, weight loss related or muscle gain related. ⁣

Bodily function comes first. ⁣

So if your goal is health, does it not make sense that while weight loss may be a factor in that a nutrient dense eating style would also play an important role? ⁣

Quality matters. ⁣

You need to stop the black and white thinking for a topic that is grey. ⁣

Health exists on a spectrum and your health that sits somewhere on that should not be dictated by a system of good and bad but rather by one that looks for the most optimal solution at the time. ⁣

If you want to improve your health, rather than taking the old saying of aim for the moon and you will land in the stars, how about you just start by getting off the couch first? ⁣

By labelling parts of health as good and bad we limit our ability to change by doing two things:⁣

1. You make your window of optimisation smaller - this is a target you should aim for daily. When you label things as good and bad you remove large chunks of things that you could use as measures of improvement making it harder for you to actually improve anything. When you do this you minimise your opportunity for success and increase the potential for feelings of failure. ⁣

2. You create an emotional connection to the label - if you label a food as bad or a food group as bad, how do you think you are going to feel if a situation arises and you eat it? Guilt, shame, like a failure. Sound familiar? Labels create emotion and once you have invested emotionally in something it can be hard to break back out. Instead, if you look remove labels and just look for something that is fit for purpose at the time you increase the likelihood of your choice being health promoting and more in line with your goals. ⁣

You can be proud of the person you are and still want to be better.

Don’t look at change as trying to fix something that is broken.

Change is a process of you bettering yourself. Improving. Evolving. Taking it to the next level.

Change is not you fixing a broken part of yourself but rather improving a part that no longer functions the way you want it to.

You are where you are because of the person you are now.

But if you want more. Or better. Or different.

You need to evolve past that.

That doesn’t mean your broken.

It’s means you are human.

There is no one size fits all. Health is about nuance and every individual is different. Learn to understand the subtle ...

Health is about nuance and every individual is different.

Learn to understand the subtle parts that make you different and leverage them to make yourself better.

Dragging your ass through s**t that makes you miserable isn’t a good recipe for your success.

There is something to be said for hard work and discipline but there also needs to a level of enjoyment and an understanding of why.

Bettering your health often starts with trying to fix a problem. ⁣

It could be:⁣

Confidence.⁣
𝘌𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺.⁣
Performance.⁣
𝘚𝘦𝘹 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦. ⁣
Excess fat. ⁣
𝘊𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘳𝘶𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘪𝘥𝘴. ⁣
Puffed walking up stairs. ⁣

You get the idea. You have tried before, you talk to people about it. You sign up with “experts” that try and overhaul your whole life for this one thing. ⁣

But you end up in the same spot. ⁣

I used to be like that. ⁣

Until I realised the problem was me. ⁣

Attention and focus will direct our energy, the famous quote goes something like “I think therefore I am”. I used to constantly think about my problems and you probably do to. ⁣

But where does that direct your energy? ⁣

It directs it to the negative. Instead of focusing on the solutions you need you are thinking about the problems you have. ⁣

Now I’m not saying that you should ignore your problems. Far from it. You need to be aware of them. You just don’t need be consumed by them. ⁣

Start thinking like the person you want to become and more often than not the solutions start to present themselves in your life (within reason). ⁣

If you want to be healthy, you need to think you are a healthy person. ⁣

If you want to stress less you need to think you are stress free. ⁣

Try this out, take a goal you want. Think about who you need to be to get to that goal, what would that person think? ⁣

Now, every morning for the next 7 days when you wake up start your day by thinking like that person. ⁣

Example:⁣

“I am health, I am strong, I am fit”.⁣

If you want better health then remove unnecessary variables.

It wasn’t until I learnt to do this that mine and my clients health changed dramatically.

Focus on the things that can actually impact your current state vs going all in and blowing out early.

As men, we have a tendency to want to go hard.

But there are levels and seasons to this that you have to pay attention to.

If you want to affect your health or improve in anyway then pick 1 - 3 things you can change. Work on them. That’s it.

Go to bed earlier.
Go for a walk instead of watching TV.
Eat fruit.
Get some sunlight.
Go to the gym, regularly.

Don’t take them all on. Just 1 - 3 and see how dramatically your health changes when you focus on doing those things really well.
