SHIKKO – The Art of Knee Walking

Shikko is a traditional Japanese method of moving while kneeling, widely practiced in martial arts such as Aikido and classical Bushido schools. Although it appears simple, shikko develops balance, coordination, posture, hip mobility, and lower-body strength. Every movement is performed with control, stability, and awareness, reflecting the discipline and respect that define the warrior spirit.

When practicing shikko, keep your back straight, engage your core muscles, and move smoothly without bouncing. Lead each step with one knee while maintaining balance and allowing your hips to move naturally. Avoid rushing. The goal is precision, not speed. Every movement should feel calm, efficient, and purposeful.

Regular shikko training improves flexibility in the hips and knees, strengthens the legs, and teaches practitioners how to maintain stability from a low position. It also enhances mental focus, patience, and body awareness—qualities essential for both martial arts and everyday life.

Beginners should practice on a soft training mat to protect their knees and perform the exercise slowly until the movement becomes natural. As skill improves, increase the duration while maintaining perfect posture and breathing. Quality is always more important than quantity.

Shikko is more than a physical exercise. It represents humility, discipline, and continuous self-improvement. By mastering this traditional movement, martial artists learn to stay composed under pressure and develop the strong foundation required for advanced techniques.

"True strength is revealed through disciplined movement, unwavering balance, and a humble spirit."
