Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandads and father figures in our GBAFC whānau 💛⚽️💙

A special shout out to all our dads who coach, manage teams, help on the committee, run the sidelines, move goals, wash kits, drive kids around and simply turn up week after week to help make football happen.

We appreciate all the time you give to our players and our club.

Hope you’ve all had a great Father’s Day with your families 💛⚽️💙

⚽ 9th Grade Fun Football – What a first season!

As we wrapped up the season, it’s a great opportunity to look back on what has been a fantastic first year of 9th Grade Fun Football for our club.

This season, three teams took part – the Collingwood Assassins, Takaka Roosters, and Takaka Tornadoes - with the Tornadoes also becoming our first all-girls team at this age level.

Under NZ Football’s new Football 2.0 framework, Fun Football is the next step on from First Kicks. The small-sided 5v5 format gives kids more time on the ball and more opportunities to develop their skills, confidence and understanding of the game, while keeping the focus on what matters most at this age – having fun and enjoying football!

Previously, our 9th Grade players competed in a 7-a-side competition. As part of the new Football 2.0 this wasn’t offered by Nelson Bays Football this year, so we had to create our own in-house programme – and what a great first season it has been!

Every three weeks, the kids had the opportunity to travel over the hill to Saxton Field and play against teams from across Tasman. They absolutely embraced these trips and often seemed to save some of their best football for them! Playing against new opposition was a great challenge and helped build their skills and confidence throughout the season. Thank you to Nelson Suburbs Football Club for welcoming us!

Another highlight was our Interclub Days, when our three Golden Bay teams came together every three weeks for some fun and friendly competition. The sportsmanship and encouragement between the teams was fantastic to see.

When we weren’t travelling or holding an Interclub Day, we had our home training sessions, with plenty of fun, game-based activities – and, of course, the Parents vs Kids games, which provided lots of laughs and friendly rivalry!

While the weather certainly wasn’t on our side for several games, the commitment and enthusiasm from the kids was awesome to see. Whenever we managed to get onto the field, they made the most of it.

It has been really rewarding to see how much the players have progressed since coming from First Kicks. Their confidence on the ball, decision-making and understanding of the game have all improved. Even better has been watching them develop as teammates – communicating, supporting one another and learning that football is about playing together.

A huge thank you to all our parents for getting the kids to games, making the trips over the hill, cheering from the sidelines and getting involved throughout the season.

And, of course, a massive thank you to Felicia Schroder, our amazing Fun Football Coordinator, our coaches – Paul (Roosters), Jess and Felicia (Tornadoes), and Clay (Assassins) – along with our team management, for all the time and effort that went into making this new format work for our kids.

For our first season of Fun Football, we couldn’t be prouder of how the kids embraced it. They’ve developed their football, grown in confidence, made some great memories and, most importantly, had plenty of fun along the way.

Finally, a special shout-out to Laser Electrical Golden Bay and OnTheSpot for supporting and sponsoring Little Kicks and Fun Football. The future is bright, and your support means so much to our club and our young players.

What a great first season! 💙💛⚽

A huge congratulations to the Golden Bay High School Girls' Team that competed this week in
the NZ Secondary Schools Gary Sowden Tournament in Christchurch.

On the back of a great season with the Shield Maidens and Wahine Toa, they went out there and delivered something truly special.

Drawn in a group with big schools Upper Hutt College, Burnside High School, St. Margaret's College and Hillmorton High School, they didn't just compete—they topped their group. Three wins, one draw, and zero goals conceded 🤩

They made the semi-final, losing narrowly 1-0 to Rolleston in a game that could have gone
either way.

But the result doesn't tell the full story. With a tiny squad, battered and bruised, these girls
showed unbelievable heart, resilience and courage. They played real tournament football,
managing games with maturity beyond their years and lifting each other up when things got
hard. Playing on artificial turf for the first time was a real experience and this actually suited the girls passing style of football really well. The practice and approach pays off! The attitude the girls showed was impeccable and this was commented on by opposition players, coaches and managers a like.

Finishing 4th out of 18 teams, ahead of so many larger and more fancied schools, is truly
remarkable! 💯🔥

A huge shout out to the coaches and parents that were there with the girls too. Pew, Tori and Marina you are legends and what you did to support these girls is monumental🙏💙💛

You did the Bay so proud!

Tiny Tots on again tomorrow :)

Look forward to seeing any 0-5 year olds that would like to give football a go. No experience needed, lots of fun!

Last week was so much fun, so many little ballers out there charging around! And it looks like the weather should get much better than it is now.

We might be a few minutes after 10am as we are also doing Little Kicks prize giving.

A huge thank you to Kinetic 💙⚽

Getting our kids onto the football field each week takes a whole community, and we are incredibly grateful to Kinetic (Go Bus) for their support towards our club’s travel costs.🚌

Living over the hill means travel is a big part of playing football. Many of our families have multiple children playing, often at different grounds and sometimes on opposite sides of the hill on the same day. As much as we’d love to split ourselves in two, unfortunately we haven’t quite mastered that yet!

Having buses available means our teams can travel together, our kids can get to their games, and the financial and logistical burden on both the club and our families is significantly reduced.☺️

Support like this genuinely makes a difference to a small community club like ours. It helps us keep football accessible and gives more of our tamariki the opportunity to get out there, play the game they love and represent Golden Bay.

Thank you, Kinetic, for helping us keep our kids moving. 💙💛🚌⚽

CONGRATULATIONS Zac Bulters and Kiyo Ejima!
Selection amongst the best in the region to represent across the South Island! Phenomenal stuff and great reward for a huge season with the Golden Bay Mountain Goats where you two had more minutes than any other players and played so well! 💙💛

Mainland Football would like to congratulate the following players from Nelson and Marlborough who have been selected to represent our region in the Under 17 Boys Youth Southern League competition, commencing in September.

The Boys Youth Southern League provides an exciting opportunity for these young players to test themselves against quality opposition, gain valuable experience at a higher level, and further develop their skills and confidence.

Congratulations to all players selected — we look forward to following the teams progress throughout the BYSL competition.
