✨ Did you know? The horses at River Valley Stables are carefully selected for both temperament and ability — because the terrain they cover demands it. Our high country treks involve river crossings, steep terrain, and big open spaces. That means we need horses that are sure-footed, calm under pressure, and experienced on the land.

Every horse in our string is matched to its rider’s ability, not just their size. It’s one of the reasons we ask that riders have genuine experience in the saddle — our horses are partners in the ride, not just transport. Want to know if our trips are right for you? The riding experience — high country landscape, what to expect on a trek

There’s something about heading out into the Rangitikēi on horseback that clears the head like nothing else. Wide open high country and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think.

Our treks take you through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the North Island — the kind you won’t see from a road. Day treks with River Valley Stables run November through April.

Multi-day adventures are bookable now for the 2026–27 season. Riders need to be comfortable and confident in the saddle — our trips are designed for those who genuinely love riding, not introductory sessions.

Home on the Range

With the stables closed for winter, now is actually the ideal time to start thinking about a Home on the Range riding holiday for next season.

Our 2–4 night riding holidays are built around natural horsemanship — time bonding with your horse in the arena, exploring the Rangitikei hill country on longer treks, and returning each evening to River Valley Lodge for great food and a well-earned rest.

Fully tailored to you. Intermediate riders and above. Min age 13, maximum weight 95kg. Season opens 1 November.
