North vs South – 2026 Championship Wrap

What a way to finish the season… this one had everything, and was no different to the back end of our season.

From highs to setbacks, pace to problems, and even a father vs son battle on track the North vs South Championship delivered right to the final lap.

Friday

Both cars rolled off the trailer with solid speed.

Time Trials

Jason: 3rd out of 15
Braith: P1 out of 15

A statement straight away both right in the mix early.

Heat Races

Braith opened from Grid 8 and quickly showed pace, charging into 5th and hunting 4th before a frustrating breather cap issue ended his run early with a DNF.

He bounced back in Heat 2, fighting through from 4th to finish 3rd despite vision issues holding him back.

Jason’s night started steady from 10th, working forward to 6th.
Then in Heat 2, starting from pole, he brought it home 2nd after a strong, controlled run the 23GM finally showing real pace with the gremlins gone.

Friday Night Feature

Jason started 4th, Braith 10th.

Both showed real speed in race conditions:

Jason came home just off the podium in 4th
Braith charged forward to 7th, still battling setup limitations but showing grit all the way

A solid, hard earned night’s work.

Saturday – North vs South Championship

Reset. Refocus. The main event.

Everything on the line not just individual results, but team pride.

Heats

Braith showed his strongest pace of the weekend in Heat 1 up to 4th and looking threatening before tightening conditions dropped him back to 8th, recovering to 6th.

Heat 2 unfortunately ended early due to ongoing issues, putting his weekend in doubt.

Jason answered immediately with a dominant Heat 1 win from Grid 2 perfect momentum.

Heat 2 looked even better… until a throttle linkage failure on lap 1 brought a sudden DNF.

Pole Shuffle

Jason locked in 4th and held his starting spot.

Braith pulled off a strong recovery drive, climbing from 10th to 5th after a car drop-out salvaging valuable track position.

Feature Race – 25 Laps

Both cars lined up ready for the big one.

While Braith’s car was still lacking entry grip, he refused to back down, fighting hard through traffic and even working his way toward podium contention.

A late caution brought it all together… and briefly, fans got a rare but great sight Braith and Jason going head-to-head on track before turning their attention back to the podium fight.

At the flag:

Braith: 4th
Jason: 5th

And with consistent results across the top runners, the North Team were crowned 2026 Champions.

Final Word

An epic weekend to close out a season that’s been anything but simple frustrating at times, rewarding at others, but always fun and always full noise, also a huge thankyou to Craig and pottinger family for the hospitality and the event. We know how much goes into these events to make them as great as what they are.

Big thanks to our little crew again the drivers braith and jason, plus the superstars mum and brax. And everyone else in between the Dykstra’s and Iain mary anne, and dan!
And Scotty for the renta wing.

Plenty learned, plenty to fix, and plenty of motivation heading into next season.

A huge thank you to our partners and every single fan across the country who backs us week in, week out it means more than results ever could. Will get a post out later on thanking our continued support with partners and supporters till then.

See you next season, Team Kalin.

Perseverance pays off 👊🏼
Heat race win for Jase & the 23GM after finally sorting the issues. Bloody awesome to get it sorted for the Whyte Motorsport team — an unreal opportunity and a great result.

Happy Easter everyone, hope you’re all enjoying the break.

As we sit at Christchurch Airport on a very gloomy, wet day ready to head home, it’s time to reflect on what was a very busy few days for the smaller team this weekend.

With the Modified Invasion condensed into one night, it made for a super busy day and night. The team has been chasing an oil leak on the 9GM for a few weeks now. We thought we had it sorted — next minute, it’s back again. A continuous gremlin that just wouldn’t go away. But after many hours in the shed yesterday, we finally found it and got it sorted.

Both boys fought hard throughout the night.
The 9GM picked up two 4th-place finishes, while the 23GM came away with a 9th and a 4th.

That put Braith 4th qualifier for the pole shuffle. Unfortunately Jase just missed out, but was right there helping get Braith sorted and had a front row seat for it.

Well… as most of you would’ve seen from the videos of the pole shuffle — whether it was on the pits live stream or over on Daz McGrath flashback media page, definitely worth checking out…

“HOLY HECKER,” as Braith would say.

Heading back to the trailer to organise parts, unsure of the extent of the damage, we then hear he’s going to carry on and continue the shuffle. Proud of you, mate — always giving 150%.

With plenty of hands jumping in, very little turnaround time, and the awesome team at Chunk Racing loaning us a wing, we managed to get him back out for the feature.

Braith started from grid 4 and Jase from grid 9 for 25 laps. Some great, hard racing all round. We didn’t quite have the setup right on the 9GM, bringing it home in 6th, while Jase was down on power in the 23GM, finishing 9th. Hopefully we’ve found the issue with the 23GM and we can get the rocket back where it belongs with race pace.

The team always enjoys the Modified Invasion, and even though it was all packed into one night, it was just as enjoyable as it was challenging.

A few people to thank from the weekend:

Our amazing friends Mary-Anne Hefford and continued partnership with Whyte Motorsport for the opportunity with the 23GM.

Chunk and the team 22 c modified racing for the pump rebuild and wing.

Shaun Ashton for appearing like Batman and finding (and fixing) a broken rotor on the 9GM.

Braith’s Christchurch family Lachy Grant Michelle Rodgers for always being such a strong support crew and hands-on when needed.

Kieran Harris from KH Fabrication — an absolute legend this weekend in so many ways.

Kinder from Woodford Glen for taking such good care of the trailer over the past three weeks.

Rob fromRob's Speedway Images for the wicked photos and ongoing support.

Daz— your video footage is always next level.

Qj Nelmes Construction LTD great supporter.

And Lauren Keegan for the perfect pics.

And to everyone who’s sent messages — we wouldn’t be doing this without you.

No rest for the team though… another big weekend ahead.

If anyone might want a piece of art for man cave re- what’s left of the wing send a message will need to be collect ASAP.

We’d like to thank all the teams that attended the Otago Champs & Modified Thunder for their amazing support of the event — it truly made for a great meeting.

A big thank you to Custom Signs Beachlands Speedway for showcasing the Modified class with style, and a special mention to Braith for all the planning and organisation that went into such a cool event.

A highlight of the weekend was the impromptu prize giving held at a local tavern — it felt like one big family, with great camaraderie and plenty of banter all around. We would also like to thank all the sponsors of the event — without you, it wouldn’t be possible.

Custom Signs Beachlands Speedway, The Mods Return!

After 8–9 years away, the Modifieds finally made their return to Beachlands Speedway and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

Unfortunately, the weather had other plans, cutting the night short. We managed to get one full heat in and a second that was heavily affected by drizzle, making conditions extremely tricky for everyone.

Heat 1 Results
Jason Kalin (23GM) – Started P5 → Finished P5
Braith Kalin – Started P1 → Finished P1

A solid opening heat, with Braith getting the job done up front and Jason holding strong in a competitive field.

Heat 2 Results
Jason Kalin – Started P6 → Finished P4
Braith Kalin – Started P10 → Finished P6

As the rain started to fall, the track became incredibly difficult to race on. With the only real dry lane right up against the fence, passing was nearly impossible, making any forward progress hard-earned.

We look foward to the continuation of the Horsepower Heads Otago Champs! and to take on the Qj Nelmes Construction LTD modified thunder see you there racing starts at 4pm 😎
