MATCH REPORT: Silverdale Premiers vs Mahurangi: 40-19 6th June
This week Mahurangi travelled down to Silverdale and challenged for our Country Cup. Silverdale delivered an impressive attacking display in their latest fixture against Mahurangi, running in a total of seven tries in an entertaining and hard‑fought contest.
The home side set the tone early, with Sam Johnson opening the scoring after sustained pressure inside Mahurangi’s 22. It was great to have Sam back for this game after 2 seasons playing in England. Strong forward play and quick ball at the breakdown allowed Silverdale to build momentum, and it wasn’t long before Dane Sawers added the second, finishing off a well‑constructed attacking movement.
Mahurangi showed resilience and worked hard to stay in the contest, but Silverdale continued to apply pressure across the park. Junior Inamata crossed right before half time.
Heading into the second half 18-12 up, Silverdale maintained their intensity and composure. After capitalising on space out wide, Thomas Rawiri soon extended the lead with a powerful finish following a period of sustained phase play. The forwards continued to dominate territory, providing a platform for the backs to operate effectively. The Mahurangi forwards were tiring so intense speed from Rowan Cole added his name to the scoresheet with a sharp attacking effort, keeping the scoreboard ticking over.
Mahurangi refused to back down and continued to challenge, but Silverdale’s defensive organisation held firm when required. As the game opened up late, Matt Renall took advantage of broken play to score, showcasing the team’s ability to capitalise on opportunities.
The final say came from Kade O’Meara, who crossed to cap off a strong team performance and underline Silverdale’s attacking depth. This was a welcoming gift for Kade returning from his long injury break and topped off a successful day.
Across the field, Silverdale demonstrated strong cohesion, disciplined defence, and clinical finishing. Fitness and a strong bench were also key factors with key playing positions returning from injury. The blend of forward dominance and backline ex*****on proved decisive, making it a standout performance as the team continues to build momentum at the tail end of the season.
Our player of the day was hard to pick, so one to the forwards with Sam Johnson and in the backs for Angus Henare who was instrumental at first five. This coming weekend we head to Helensville to once again defend our Country Cup and hope to keep it in our trophy cabinet for the summer. See you there.
