Fish are where you find them. Geoff cast a glo bug off the jetty at Lake Okaraka and was rewarded with this handsome Jack. Spawning fish are starting to show up around the Fish and Game release points on the Rotorua lakes. These fish are more interested in spawning than feeding, but a glo bug may work if you are patient enough.

Spawning fish seem to be showing up a little earlier at the release points around the Rotorua lakes, so I decided on a drive out to Rerewhakaiutu to check the shoreline at Ash Pit road reserve. I met a family there who had been fishing for a couple of hours using the heave and leave method. A spin rod, a weight, and a glo bug.
They had six fish in the bin and were well satisfied with their efforts. There certainly were spawning fish, cruising the shoreline, not in big numbers yet, but an indication of what's to come. The pics show how high the lake is. The Jetty at Homestead arm is underwater. The horses being exercised in the lake were well away from the spawning shore.

Lake Okareka is proving a popular and rewarding fishing venue for club members seeking to fish close to home. Fifteen minutes out of the city and boasting one of the best boat ramps in the district, it's a magnet for trolling, jigging, or soft bait fisherman.
