Great start to the season with Manu at Lumsden Show.
Came in very underprepared thanks to the weather, but Manu stepped up and jumped clear round the RTR and had 2 down in the 1m for 4th 🏅

Great end to the season at Southland A&P, coming home with a 4th in the 90cm and finishing up 2nd in the NRM McMillans Equine Feed 90cm Accumulator Series!

Manu & Frankie went to Mt Benger A&P last weekend!

Pop A Manu was on form, picking up 3rd in the 90cm and 2nd in the 1m!! 🏅

Franklin also came along for a couple rounds!
Frankie’s last show of the season, and he’s now going into semi-retirement. Frankie’s been the most consistent and reliable horse for the last 4 years and definitely deserves a more relaxed lifestyle now ❤️ He’ll definitely make an appearance at a couple of the smaller shows next season, but other than that he’ll enjoy just being ridden at home. Going to be strange not having mr reliable on the float to every show next season, have absolutely loved the last 4 seasons with Frankie boy!

🌡️💉STRANGLES IN HORSES💉🌡️

As some of you in equine circles will have heard there are currently several confirmed cases of Strangles in the South Island. This was initially in Canterbury, but there are now confirmed cases in Otago and Southland. All affected horses have been isolated and the risk of a large strangles outbreak remains low.

Strangles is a respiratory disease caused by the bacteria Steptococcus equi equi. It causes purulent nasal discharge and abscess formation in lymph nodes of the head and neck. The mortality rate is low but horses can be very sick and recovery from the disease can be slow. Clinical signs to look for include:
⁃ high temperature (>38.5°C)
⁃ Nasal discharge
⁃ Swollen lymph nodes
Please note that these signs can also be caused by diseases other than strangles.

There is a vaccine available for strangles, but stocks may be low given this situation. The initial course is 3 vaccines, each given 2 weeks apart. Booster doses need to be given every 6 months to provide adequate protection. The vaccine is not 100% effective against strangles so your horse can still get infected despite vaccination.

If you have any concerns please feel free to call the clinic and discuss with one of our veterinarians. There is no need to panic, but it would be prudent to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary contact with other horses where possible.

Huge day on Saturday for Manu! Spent most of the day chilling at Mataura Rodeo, and then snuck away for one round at Winton A&P Show! Unfortunately a very uncharacteristic round for Manu due to the slippery conditions, but behaved himself so well!

Boys were on fire yesterday at West Otago A&P 🔥
Manu brought home the win in the 90cm 🥇 with Frankie just behind him in 2nd 🥈
Manu pulled off a clear 1m for his first attempt at a show, but the silly rider thought we had a rail and didn’t do the jump off 🤦‍♀️ so we came home with 5th 🏅
Frankie completed the 1m with 12 faults.
Overall a super successful day, big thank you to Horsempire for continually supporting us and Dakota Tweedie Equestrian for driving us there & being a super groom!!
