LOOK WHERE I LANDED – Internship
Jessica Geaney – Adventure Tourism Management
Take Off
Jessica chose to study Adventure Tourism at QRC because while she keen study management theory she knew sitting in large lecture halls wasn’t for her.
Realising that not all classrooms have walls Jess was attracted to QRC’s approach of balancing theory and practice through industry visits and internships. She was also impressed with the close ties the College has within the tourism industry.
The Flight
It has been a year since I began my journey with QRC and for the first six months on campus, study was focussed on learning how to manage and run an adventure business.
One of the highlights so far, in addition to receiving an industry specific qualification of course (!), has been making connections with other like-minded individuals and industry professionals.
While in Queenstown I have had the opportunity to get outside the classroom and be exposed to a wide range of adventure activities such as bungy jumping, jet boating, ski/snowboarding, and hiking. This has given me a wider appreciation of the variety and depth of career opportunities within the industry. I’m excited to get back and finish term 5 & 6.
Landing
After finishing the 2021 season on the mountain with NZSki for the first part of her internship, Jessica landed a job as close to the lake front as you could get with Paddle Queenstown. Her day to day involves setting up the beach with kayaks, paddle boards and aqua bikes. Her first job of the morning is usually to hop on to one of the paddle boards and head out to collect the rescue boat from its overnight mooring.
In her Guest Services / Instructor role she greets guests and teaches them basic kayak and paddle board skills then sends them on their way to enjoy the sunshine and scenery around the shores of Queenstown Bay and Lake Wakatipu . Her Operations and Risk Management paper has also come in useful as a large part of her responsibility is overseeing guests’ safety.
With a desire to pursue a career travelling the world on the high seas, Jessica’s ultimate goal is to land a job on board a super yacht turning her passion of exploring into a career.
Travel Tips
“My top tip to get ahead in the industry is to really focus on where you want to go with your career. Do not be afraid to chase after your goals and never doubt your abilities, you are capable of anything you dream to do.”
