Missed Opportunity 😕
Old Boys 1 - 0 Queenstown SFDL.
We travelled down to Invercargill knowing that we needed a positive result to keep the pressure on those above, unfortunately we came up a little short & with other results this one seems like a missed opportunity.
Before the game we spoke about winning our individual moments and when we failed to clear a corner and gifted OB’s the lead inside 5 minutes, it was a message not received and we were on the back foot. A close and competitive game followed; defensively we settled after the goal it was another solid performance & moments of good football but we simply did not click moving the ball forward.
Despite some squandered moments in front of goal at the death this one slipped away, OB’s won the vital moments and were good value for their victory.
The good news is that those same results elsewhere mean we still have everything to play for and it may yet still be in our own hands. 🙌

QAFC SFDL 5 v 0 Roslyn
After a long break the Development Squad were back in action in Queenstown. It is fair that a bit of rust was evident and we were not at our fluid best but still a dominant display & well deserved 3 points.
A few injuries meant we had to shuffle the pack & saw some in unfamiliar territory, but once again they responded well with both Zac (2) & Romeo scoring from their more advanced positions. Felix, pinpoint accuracy from distance and a cool, confidence boosting back post finish (something we have been working on) from Ryder rounded off the scorers.
But also a word to our current defensive group; including Maxim in at GK for the in-form Harper, Maxim has been patient & shown a great attitude and deserved the nod for this one; the group have now gone over 200 minutes now without conceding 👏👏 … they provide the platform on which everything else stands.
Big games ahead Old Boys in Invercargill & top of the table DCR at home, certainly not getting any easier but the Queenstown YDL continues punch well above its weight in this space & with other results going our way nothing is off the table just yet. 🤞🤞

Tonight saw the first (but hopefully not the last) truly local derby, QAFC SFDL U15 v WHS 1st XI. A competitive game was great to watch. Finshed 2-2 after the 4th Quarter and was decided on a penalty shoot out, against quite a back drop, with QAFC 8-7 taking the bragging rights on this occasion.

QAFC YDL 1 - 0 Wanaka

It seems like we are making a habit of contesting some real nail biters!

As we kick off it is evident that Wanaka have come to play and they dominate the earlier exchanges and possession but without threatening the QAFC goal, in fact, the Queenstown goal is hardly threatened across the 80.

That said we just seem a little bogged down and passes are continually missing the mark. But the defensive group of Victor, Kadin, Connor & Jack, keep the opposition at bay on the way to a well earned clean sheet.

As the first half wore on QAFC grow into the game and have the better of the chances, with goal line saves and the crossbar coming to Wānaka’s rescue. Until Arlo pops up for his 13th of the season and we are 1 - 0 at half time. The second half is well contested, but follows a similar pattern, possession to them but chances to us. We swap players & formation with 20 to go and see the game out. Not a classic but another excellent 3 points & another stride forward for the Young Rovers.

We now have a break, but many of our squad head away to the Christchurch International Cup, in collaboration with in July, Wish us luck will keep you posted. ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

QAFC YDL 4 – 2 Queens Park

Hard to remember a more exciting game in The Oval than this one!

Having beaten QP a couple of times in pre-season, we warned the boys against letting complacency creep in; it was a warning not well heeded as we started with an all to casual swagger; we quickly paid the price. The QP No. 9 is a handful, a point highlighted before KO. As a hopeful ball sailed high and we failed to deal with it around halfway it turned into a foot race that he won. Moments later we leave the same player unmarked in the box and find ourselves and 0-2 down. The message from the bench, was not to panic and play ‘our game’ but with the lion’s share of possession, chances come and go and it starts to have a feeling of one of those days. The anxiety exuding from the throng of supporters behind now palpable.

No teacups were broken at half time, just an acknowledgement that we got caught cold, we are on top everywhere but on the scoresheet. We talk about effectively combining in the final 1/3 and how it now comes down to their individual and collective character. The boys believe.

The second half brings a higher tempo & more urgency as we get the desired response. QP get deeper & struggle to get anything meaningful. Our confidence returns and combinations are visible from the back to front, but the ball still will not go in. Then with a little over 20 to go Ryder whips in another delightful cross and it’s turned in by Arlo. Game on. We throw the dice with a tactical change as QP’s attacking spark is now all but extinguished and they start to look rattled. 1 – 2 becomes, 2 – 2 but we are not done we continue to move the ball with authority and control. When the 3rd goes in it is greated by a roar from the stands and Jamie and I allow ourselves a little smile and a handshake, accompanied by a nervous look at the watch. No need, as the game is sealed when Xavier turns in the box and finishes 4 – 2.

This was a team performance full of character and worthy of note.

As we hit the halfway point of the season, we reflect on an 18 + month journey for this young squad with a lot of pride & a pretty good-looking league table. 👇👇👇👇

Roslyn v QAFC. Saturday 18th May

A 7.30 start for our away day to Dunedin was met with the first signs of the winter weather ahead.

I'm filling in for regular coach Mark today.

Rain, sleet and cold winds would be the only real consistent on the day.

We arrive in Cromwell just after 8 to collect Kadin, Jesse, Logan and Ryder. The conversation on route is surprisingly articulate and almost mature, times are changing.

As we approach Dunedin, road works at East Tieri leads to a delay as we join the early morning traffic, the boy's start to get anxious. I remind them that we are ahead of schedule and not to panic.

We arrive at Ellis Park. Roslyn is a good club with good people, they treat me and the boys well.

The game is played in a difficult pitch, slopping from one side to another it makes for a challenging game, passing is difficult due to the bogey grass, we struggle to play our normal game and to many times we are caught running with the ball.

This provides Roslyn with the momentum and first half is a struggle. They score early with a low finish after a good save from Harper, he keeps us in the game first half with a few important stops.

Felix's equaliser just before the break is huge for us, a cool left foot finish gives us parity and it's probably undeserved.

Basically, we look like we have sleep walked through that half.

Connor tells the boy's that's not nearly good enough, I'm a bit more forceful.

My message is clear to win on the road always has to be earned, especially long trips to Dunedin.

Areas we wanted to improve on were being more determined, having a greater degree of aggression and showing better decisions in the way we play, but mainly in the final third.

Second half is chalk and cheese. The pivotal moment comes early in the second half, Zac scores with his left foot from outside the box and our confidence grows.

The sigh from the Roslyn bench and supporter's is felt on our side, now I'm vocal, cajoling the boys to work harder.

No 50/50s, can we move the ball quicker, can we be positive, well done, well done are the standard message.

The lads are amazing, the second half scorers 3 goals from Arlo, 2 for Xav, 2 for Felix.

In the end it could have been more.

Massively proud of the boy's for their second half showing. They showed great character to win comfortably in the end.

A big thanks to Roslyn for providing the boys with after match food and offering me the chance to say some word's of encouragement to the Roslyn boys.

REFNO QAFC Youth.

Next week we are at home to Old Boys.

Saturday 25th May
Kickoff 12.30.
Venue. Oval

It would be great to see as many people come along and see the future Rovers.

Today saw our opening home fixture of the season on a perfect Oval pitch for which set the scene for some glorious football and once again the YDL Squad rose to the challenge. Arlo’s stunning strike after an inch perfect switch from Xavier was the start of a torrid afternoon for the visitors. 3-0 up quickly. A North End penalty was a brief blip, before a slight change in formation & QAFC took back the initiative. 6-1 at the half. Included was the first goal of the season for Victor that capped a towering performance at CDM, with Arlo, Xavier and Jesse all adding to the tally. This week the team were not ready to let the opposition back into this one and with our defence in fine form and collective shape we continued to stretch and control North End in all areas after the break; We added 3 more in what was a brilliant total team performance. Final score 9-2.

Also of note, our wider YD squad played & won today, 4-2. With many of the players playing 2 or 3 grades higher it was an excellent result for Marcelo’s group. Some of the possession football and level of play on display among these young players was very pleasing to watch and consistent with the work being done in the QAFC youth space. Good weekend for Queenstown football fans 😀⚽️

We travelled to Wanaka for our opening fixture which we know are always going to competitive affairs. This one didn’t disappoint!

Queenstown bossed the first half, showcasing some excellent combination play that opened up Wanaka on both flanks, and with Xavier hitting the bar with an audacious lob and a few missed chances, we should have killed the game off, but it was not to be. 2-0 at the half.

Wānaka came out strong in the second period and a couple of lapses on concentration saw us pulled back 2-2.

The game then seesawed 3-2, after great work down the right by Jesse. A couple more golden opportunities to kill it off came and went before disaster and two scrappy moments and we found ourselves 3-4 down.

Last season this may have seen us done and the resilience desert us, but not this year; the character shown across the team, was amazing and they pulled themselves off the floor, rallying and when, in what was a common theme of the Wanaka defensive effort, they hacked us down again, this time it was in the box.

Xavier stepped up and calmly put the penalty away.

We had the better of the closing moments and opportunities to win it at the death but 4-4 it stayed. Exciting game, the boys literally ran themselves into the ground. There promises to be lots to come from this group of young players this season.
