Have Trouble Feeling Your Core During Core Work? 🫵

Does your lower back love to "take over" during reclined core work? If so, you are definitely not alone!

This is incredibly common when lying on your back for exercises like leg lowers, dead bugs, or hollow body holds. (You know, that highly popular core burner we’ve been doing at the start of class where you extend your arms and legs away from your body!)

Sometimes this feels like your lower back muscles are working overtime. Other times, it shows up as actual discomfort or pain. 😬

When we perform these moves, the goal is to load our abdominals on the front of the torso. But our lumbar extensors on the back love to jump in and steal the spotlight.

Why does this happen?
Usually, we have simply gone past our current strength edge. If we load our abdominals beyond their capacity, the pelvis tilts forward, the lower back arches, and those back muscles fire up.

The fix? Scale it back to build it up!

Regressing the movement is a great way to keep the focus where it belongs. Try these two quick tweaks:
- Reduce the range of motion: Don't lower your legs down quite as far.
- Reduce the lever length: Bend your knees instead of keeping your legs perfectly straight.

Now, you don't need a chiseled six-pack like the guy in our photo to have a functional, pain-free core! 😉 (But learning how to fire up the right muscles is a great place to start).

We are evolving our Thursday 7:30pm Yin class into a 60-minute, science-backed Complete Tissue Conditioning session! Whether you are a dedicated Yin lover or found the old format too slow, this new blend of active movement and deep stillness is built for you.

Here is what you can expect from the new format:
✨Active movement: Muscle-warming yoga poses to build heat and increase blood flow.
✨Targeted focus: Every class features a specific theme or anatomy focus area.
✨Deep release: Floor Yin poses held for several minutes, using props to provide restorative support and melt away tension.

Yoga is never just one thing.
To some, it is a physical workout to build strength and flexibility. To others, it is a mental sanctuary to find stillness, breathe and reset.

The magic of the practice: no matter what brings you to your mat, you always walk away with the benefits of both.

The humble lunge. 🧘‍♀️ It looks simple, but it does so much for your body.

If you spend your day sitting at a desk, driving, or rushing around, your hip flexors could be tight, shortened, and holding onto stress. A deep, intentional lunge in our warm room is the ultimate antidote.
