Final LONG long run before Tarawera, tick!

Didn’t bring enough water ❌ Forgot to bring a proper lunch ❌ Watch ran out of juice near the end ❌ Still nervous going through fields and down paths with cows/sheep/goats ❌ But got 56km with 2000m elevation gain in the run bank and gave me the confidence my mind needed to convince myself yep I can get this done in Feb ✔️

Also got to tick off the trail directory trail The Route of No Return (return) which has been on the wish list for a while 😃

Tāwharanui, you beauty.

We were camping for the weekend and managed to escape for an early run along the peninsula and it was such a magic run, one where I felt just so relaxed and my legs did all the work and just carried me up and around the hills. THEN I saw a Saddleback!! And finished it all off with a post run swim 😊

During races I really dislike the transition from hills to flat running. So today I did 8 minutes on the stairs followed by about 8 minutes on the flat, repeated 5 times, to try to get my legs used to the change after a hard climb. Don’t think it really achieved much but nice to mix up a stair rep session.

Today’s training courtesy of was a Spaghetti Fart run (aka Moneghetti Fartlek) which consisted of progressively reduced Fartlek rep times 90,60,30,15 seconds, as well as progressively reduced recovery times.

Not counting WU and CD, this only took 20min and this may just be a new fav wee run type.

Today I had a rhythm run at target pace and ended up running around and around and around a park for 21km as it was flat and seemed like a good space to hit a rhythm.

Have never done that loop de loop sort of training before for a long run and have no intention of doing that again 😁

After being sent on The Goat contingency last year, we came back to have another shot at it, only for the weather to decide that instead we’ll be on a 25km contingency course for 2019.

So straight up the mountain road we slogged for 12.5km before hitting the beautiful and bouncy forest at the top of Blyth track with some technical joy before hitting the slightly muddy parts of the lower Blyth and heading back onto the Mountain road for a final 6km blast back to base.

Not what we expected but once again had a wicked weekend away with , , Kevin, and Ellie, and just loved soaking in the trail community vibe which is full of smiles, support and gratitude.

I can’t tell you how much I hated my run this morning. Had a 5km time trial and all I wanted to achieve was to see that magic number 4 in my pace. Started off too fast - at what point do we learn that this strategy never works? And at around the 3rd Km I legit said to myself should I just stop, it sucked, didn’t think I’d hit my target but how much worse would it have been to have given up?? Anyway, I carried on and am stoked, and relieved to see that shiny number 4 sitting at the front of my pace (yes, just). My speed has gone backwards since the beginning of the year but reckon I can get it back and am up for that challenge.

Waihi Trail Marathon!!

Oh that happened 2 or 3 weeks ago, correct. Well, it was most definitely a race of 2 halves. The first 22km was tough going. Proper Bush trail where the downs were as hard as the up, some fun water crossings and I just couldn’t settle. Then something happened in the second 22km half and it felt amazing, *that* hill felt pretty good, I relaxed and completely enjoyed it from there.

Massive bonus meeting , someone else who trips and falls on nothing during races. Great to hang out with at the start, and having my trail sister there to meet me in at the end after her race really made it special 💛

Nested long run ✔️

Pretty happy to get the top priority on the training program done for the week, basically a long run that starts and ends with 4 repeats of 5min efforts to really push you, especially in the last set. Didn’t quite reach targets in the last nest but not disappointed as was pushing it and still giving it a good effort.

Back on the training program! Have been free styling it for the last 6 months, and have loved the freedom of running however I want. But felt ready for a bit more guidance and discipline leading into Tarawera Ultra in February.

This was a speed work session which I would never have done as my own choice, I would have farted around on some hills and trails for a bit instead.

Highly motivated and ready.

Run commute! I get to run while the family follow afterwards in the car on our way to kayaking. Mr 6 was amazed I had run ‘all that way’ and asked if I had got a medal ☺️
