Whānau,
After a lot of thought, long conversations, reflection, and more emotions than we can count, we made the decision to close the doors on NBR Functional Training and bring this chapter to an end.
Back in February 2014 we ran our very first class at Alpha Muay Thai. A handful of gear, kids climbing the boxing ring, and absolutely no idea what this would grow into. We just knew we wanted to build something for our people.
Then January 2015 hit and our world flipped when Liam had his stroke. Everything stopped but the NBR whānau didn’t. You wrapped around us, carried us through a season we didn’t think we’d survive, and showed us what real community looks like. From there, we rebuilt, we healed, and we kept moving forward together.
Over twelve years, this place became far more than a gym. It became a home. A whānau. A space where people showed up on their hardest days and left stronger, not just physically, but as humans. We celebrated over 180 milestone workouts, survived lockdowns with Zoom sessions and driveway burpees, dragged ourselves through mud runs, smashed Round the Bays, competed across Aotearoa, and built memories that will live well beyond the soreness.
From Alpha Muay Thai, to CrossFit Porirua, Titahi Bay Beach Park, Zone Dance Academy, Kapuni Grove, and finally the CBD, every move shaped us. And while the walls changed, the heart never did.
Our kids grew up here. Kora, Layla, and Malakai didn’t just watch this journey, they lived it. This whānau helped raise them, and for that we will forever be grateful. And behind it all, Gangan and Poppa were the quiet backbone that allowed us to keep showing up when the days were long.
Now it’s time to close this chapter. Not because the love is gone, but because seasons change. Right now, it’s time to give our kids the same energy this place has had for twelve years.
We didn’t do everything perfectly. But we did it honestly. We stayed in our lane. We led with heart. And we built something real.
The legacy of NBR was never the name on the door or the equipment on the floor. It lives on through every single person who walked through these doors, every relationship built, every hard season faced together. And that legacy doesn’t end here. We are proud to be passing this space on to the Hurunui-Sefesi whānau, and we cannot wait to see what Berta, Pata, and Nia bring into it. To watch them live out their dreams in this space, build their own community, and experience the same growth, challenges, and magic that we have had the privilege of living is something we are genuinely excited for.
Thank you for trusting us with your time, your effort, your stories, and your lives. Thank you for making NBR what it was, and always will be.
This isn’t goodbye forever.
It’s a deep breath, a full heart, and a chapter we’ll carry with us always.
Ngā mihi nui ❤️💛💚
