On Saturday we held our 2026 Annual Regatta, in memory of life member Peter Keast. Grey skies and chilly northerlies set the scene, but a strong turnout from Titahi Bay, Sailability Wellington, Paremata Boating Club, and more delivered for a friendly and challenging series of four races around the harbour.

A huge thanks goes out to everyone who helped out to make this a fantastic day, one that Peter would have been proud of.

Results are up on the website, racing & prize-giving photos below.

🏆🥇Excellent work to our club stalwarts Darrell Smith and Graham Hook for winning the Burnsco 2026 SKUD 18 International Match Race Challenge.

Any time these two aren't in the same boat, they're quietly match-racing each other around the course. It's good to see that experience pay off. 🫡

Hello Porirua boating community. In case you weren’t aware, there is a large southerly storm coming with winds gusting to 60 knots on Sunday night and Monday. If you have a boat moored at the pole moorings in the channel we request (beg?) that you please go out to your boat today and put an extra line on the southern pole to avoid what happens every year… boats breaking old mooring lines, coming adrift, smashing each other up, sinking or grounding. Please don’t expect us to put our volunteers in danger because “Coastguard will sort it out”. It doesn’t work like that and we can’t do salvage jobs. Also, if you have your stern currently facing the south then it would be a good idea to spin your boat around as there have been numerous vessels swamped/sunk from the large waves that roll down through the channel in a big southerly. And the Harbour Master doesn’t like that 😁.

If you are on a swing mooring in the channel, or in the marina, we encourage you to check your lines as well.

Stay safe everyone! We are here to save lives at sea, but your moored boat is your responsibility.

Incredibly sad to see this damage being done to our moana. If you see anyone using set or gill nets, please tell them to stop or call 0800 POACHER.

A Regional Council team conducting the annual monitoring of sediment plates in the Inlet came across a total of 23 dead Rig with slit gills and a stingray with its barb removed. Reports were made to MPI poaching and fisheries teams. While there is no evidence of who or how they were caught everyone needs to know set netting is banned in the inlet and around the coast. The Porirua Harbour is a precious breeding ground and nursery for rig shark and therefore plays a very important role in sustaining the population of the species. Adult rig, or lemon fish, are a significant source of fish used in "fish and chips". Further information on rig can be found on the Guardians website page https://gopi.org.nz/rig-shark/
