A proud and humbling moment for Piha SLSC this Anzac Day, as we were given the privilege to lay a wreath in honour of those who served. Representing the club were President Peter Brown, his granddaughter, and our junior lifeguard Lewis.
Thank you to Piha RSA for bringing community together.
Lest we forget.

With an Orange Heavy Rain Watch for Auckland from 9pm and an Orange Strong Wind Watch from 10pm Saturday 11 April, rest assured that our Piha Fire Brigade and First Response, and Piha and United Surf Clubs, are organised and coordinated to provide support where and as needed.

And as your Piha Resilience Group we have connected in with these other groups to ensure that we can assist if need be too.

Key messages for the weekend ahead:
• Keep an eye on weather updates
• Prepare your home – clean gutters and drains, tie down outdoor furniture
• Check in on your neighbours to see if they are prepared- now is also a good time to reconnect with your neighbourhood WhatsApp or Facebook Group
• Let neighbours know if you are away
• Charge torches, phones, battery packs, fill water containers and anything else you need to be prepared for a power outage
• Prepare an alternative cooking method- for those without gas
• Make a plan for your household- what will you do if you need to evacuate?
If extreme weather strikes:
• Stay at home unless you feel unsafe
• Call 111 in an Emergency
• The Piha Surf Life Saving Club is open till 10pm tonight and from 6am Sunday morning and ready to provide a place for people to stay if you need it. They are prepared to stand up as an emergency hub if needed.
• United Surf Club is also ready to stand up as an emergency hub If needed
• If you’re feeling uneasy about being at home ahead of the weather the Piha Surf Club is also open for you to pop in- you’re welcome to bring what you need to be comfortable there (emergency after hours access will be through the back door)-
• If we do lose mobile phone connection the Resilient Piha Group has analogue radios to stay connected across neighbourhoods. We can connect with Auckland Emergency Management and if needed we can connect you with the Fire Brigade, First Response and the Surf Clubs.
The radios are spread across Piha, and are located on:
• Piha Road (top of the hill)
• Te Ahuahu Road
• Piha Road (by Pendrell)
• Rayner Road
• Seaview Road (by the Milk Track)
• Marine Parade South
• Beginning of Glen Esk Road
• Beginning of Garden Road
• North Piha Road (by Monkey Rock)

**Check in with your local WhatsApp Group or Facebook Group to find out who is holding the radio for your neighbourhood**

• Chris and Dave Lamont
• Denis Atkinson
• Stop Digging Services

We appreciate the work you’ve put in to help improve our patrol deck.

After a busy couple of months patrolling Piha during the week the Paid Lifeguard Service season has now come to an end! Thanks heaps to all the guards who worked hard to keep our beaches safe from Monday-Friday.

Lifeguards will no longer be on duty on Monday-Friday and we highly discourage people from swimming during this time. Instead save your swims for the weekends where our very own volunteer lifeguard patrols will be on duty from 11am to 4pm!

If you see someone in trouble in the water, please dial 111 and ask for Police to task the Piha Area Search & Rescue Squad.

Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you between the flags on the weekend!

10/10 day for the team yesterday - Piha Pirates making their mark on debut! A few highlights from the team… Claire and Zoe in the double ski race as they navigated a couple of decent waves to finish in 2nd. Also in the double ski Grant and Jay chased down their competitors on the last leg to take silver as well. Rick aced the swim, Freya took out gold in the beach flags, Claire claimed gold in both the surf race and Iron, and Nici had a monster swim in the surf teams race to bring the ladies in 2nd. A huge collective swag of treasure from the pirates time in Ohope!
Massive thanks to Conor, Adam, Ron, the senior squad and parents for their belief and encouragement. Arrrrrrgh! 🏴‍☠️💚❤️🖤

If anyone is keen to join this pirate crew please chat to Captain Claire or Conor the cabin boy 😂

A big thank you to Craig and his team at Positive Image who turned the Pirates tees round in record time! ⭐️ thanks for all your support this year.

Piha SLSC recently had the privilege of hosting a wahine workshop with . Founded by Lizzie and Harriet — two of Australia’s most successful surf athletes — KaMana’s mission is to educate and empower athletes to build confidence and better understand their bodies so they can reach their full potential.

It was fantastic to see so many members there, from Nippers to guards, parents, board members and friends of the club. Lizzie and Harriet shared a wealth of knowledge and personal stories, and their openness gave us so much to reflect on and learn from. It’s uplifting to know we have such strong support in creating space to talk about all things menstrual cycle and reaching our goals.

A huge thank you to Macreadie Builders, Richard & Ruth Adams, and the Club for sponsoring the evening. We’re also incredibly grateful to Two Islands, Almighty, and Modibodi for generously gifting products for our wāhine to enjoy.

We hope to continue building our relationship with KaMana and empowering our members through their workshops, if anyone would like to partner with us to assist with this please let us know! Thanks.

A small but solid team of 13 Seniors and 3 Masters had a great weekend recently at the Northern Region Championships in Omaha. Our senior squad placed 3rd overall, an awesome result. We had a number of silver and bronze podium finishes along with some close near-misses and a few gold medals to make everyone celebrate!

Open Men’s Beach Relay – Gold
Open Men’s Board Rescue – Gold
Isaac Gear – U19 Board Champion
Macy Hains – U19 Swim Champion

Our growing Masters squad also brought home plenty of medals and are now in their final training block heading into Nationals.

Congrats to everyone who took part, it was great to have some old faces back in the team, and to have competitors in all age groups - from U15’s to Masters.

Excited for Nationals!!

Piha crew take on the best! 🌟
Three huge days of racing in testing offshore conditions for our Piha Open Women over Waitangi weekend!
Back together for the first time since Whangamata, the crew didn’t miss a beat at Eastern Regionals and North Island Champs — powering into every final and finishing the weekend with a trio of hard-fought 2nds against the NZ crew.

They wrapped up Waitangi Weekend with a strong performance at Champs of Champs, winning the B Final against tough open crews.

Next stop: Ohope Beach in few weeks, where they’ll defend their Open Women’s title at Nationals.
We’re proud of you!💚

On Wednesday the 18th of February the Piha Area SAR Squad was alerted to a fisherman who had been swept off the rocks south of Piha Beach. Together with off-duty paid lifeguards the team responded immediately launching an IRB and RWC.

Fortunately, the fisherman was wearing a lifejacket and was thrown an angel ring by a nearby fisherman. Our lifeguards worked with Police’s Eagle helicopter to locate the patient and perform a swift rescue of the patient, who was able to return home in a stable condition.

The use of appropriate PPE by the fisherman and quick utilisation of public rescue equipment is fantastic to see and played an instrumental role in this rescue being a success.

Rock fishing on the West Coast is highly dangerous and we urge everyone to use the utmost caution. We are proud to have partnered with DPA to provide a lifejacket library at the south end of Piha Beach and we encourage all those in heading rock fishing to ensure they are equipped with the appropriate PPE.

A big thanks to everyone involved for their great work. Remember if you see someone in trouble in the water call 111 and ask for Police.

The Piha invitational is a huge community event, organised by clubbies (and an ex clubbie!) and run totally by our members and their families.

We are really lucky to have support from locals too, this year our volunteers were really well fed by both the Piha Store and Surfside Bites and Brew. Starting at 6am setting up the course a mid morning refuel from the Piha Store went down a treat and then a burger at the end of the day for all our competitors and volunteers was the perfect way to finish!

Thank you for your support!

Please support the companies who support us. 💚❤️🖤
