BE PART OF OUR STORY!

Ever thought about becoming a Surf Lifeguard? Or keen to get involved and help keep our beach safe as Patrol Support?

Now is a great time to become a member and learn some new skills! Our 2026 Surf Lifeguard training kicks off this month at Kelston Girls pool, and we’d love you to join the team.

If you aren’t sure you are ready to tackle the surf at Piha yet, our Patrol Support pathway is a great way to be part of the patrol team and contribute to keeping our community safe. Come learn from the best - Jacqui (one of our instructors) has just won Northern Region Patrol Support of the Year!

And if you want to improve your swim confidence or nail that 400m time, remember we have our Tane and Wahine swim programmes running, a great way to meet fellow members and smash your swim goals!

If anyone is shopping at New World and doesn’t need the stickers for the Smeg knives, the club would love them! We are always looking to improve our kitchen facilities and new knives would be really welcome. Not fussy, either collect a knife for us or you can message here and we can organise collecting the stickers from you. Thanks!

World Drowning Prevention Day

Today, Saturday 25 July, is World Drowning Prevention Day. This year we’re focusing on the “Float First” survival message - if you ever find yourself unexpectedly in the water, out of your depth and in a rip, simply floating on your back to catch your breath can save your life.

It’s also crucial to remember “Floatation First” when stepping in to help others. Public Rescue Equipment (PRE) at our beach also gives you a way to safely assist someone in trouble when our lifeguards aren’t on duty, without putting your own life on the line.

This World Drowning Prevention Day we remind everyone across Aotearoa that drowning is preventable. Let’s build a culture of water safety in New Zealand that ensures everyone is kept safe in and around the water.

If you are interested to know more about water safety please come and have a chat to our friendly guards when you see them at the beach.

Club Coach | Piha Surf Life Saving Club

Join us and help develop the competitive lifesaving programme at Piha SLSC!

Piha SLSC is one of the highest profile clubs in New Zealand. We have achieved many sporting successes over the years and we are now advertising for a new Club Coach to further strengthen our place in surf sports in NZ.

We have a strong senior squad, a junior surf programme that is keen to grow and some very motivated masters who are wanting to improve and compete.

Key Responsibilities
· Design and run a weekly training schedule (ocean, pool & land-based) for senior and junior squads.
· Coaching Disciplines:
Pool / Board / Ski / Surf Swim / Ironman / Beach sprint / Beach Flags / Strength and Conditioning.
· Demonstrate passion for surf lifesaving, patrolling and building confident, capable competitive lifeguards.
· Create a fun, inclusive, and rewarding environment for athletes of all ages and abilities.
· Development and upskilling of PSLSC volunteer coaches

Who we’re looking for
Someone who loves surf lifesaving in all its forms - the competition, the patrolling, the people, and the place. You’ll be coaching our senior squad, developing our junior and youth athletes, supporting our masters, and helping grow our Nippers into the competitive lifeguards of the future. You’ll also play a key role in upskilling our volunteer coaches and building a programme that’s fun, inclusive, and high-performing.

What we offer
This is ideally a full-time position but we are flexible and would consider a flexi hours role - working 20 hours per week (April to October) and 40 hrs per week from November to March. We would be keen to codesign a role to suit the right applicant for the club and our members. Salary is competitive and will be discussed with applicants.

Meet the Murray family – proof that lifeguarding can become a family lifestyle.

After a 20 year break, Serena renewed her lifeguard qualification in 2024. Sean followed the next year, and now patrol weekends are a true family affair.

Their two kids are regulars on the deck, in the water, and occasionally keeping the younger patrol members on their toes (sorry to all the Noahs! 😆). When everyone needs a breather, you’ll often find an afternoon movie playing in the residents lounge.

For the Murray family, the club is more than volunteering. It’s a place where their kids learn about water safety, build confidence, and look up to some amazing people - young and old.
Lifeguarding isn’t just about saving lives,it’s about finding your community.

This is what Piha SLSC actually produces. Not just lifeguards on the beach, but young people who are calm, capable, and ready when it counts in everyday life.
Last December, Julian was on the school bus home when his mate had an epileptic seizure.
The only adult nearby was the bus driver — no first aid training, no plan. So Julian stepped up.
He asked the driver to stop the bus. Made sure his mate had space. Had someone start a timer. Got another friend to call 111. Called his mate’s mum. And when his mate came around — confused, scared, not sure where he was or what had happened — Julian stayed calm and answered every question until his mum arrived.
Julian is one of our Rookies. He’s a kid who showed up to Junior Surf, listened to his coaches, and quietly kept everything they taught him about first aid.
And then one afternoon on a school bus, it mattered.
This is what we do at Piha SLSC. Not just the flags and the surf — but this. Young people who are ready when it counts.

We’re so proud of you Julian. 💚
