Heretaunga Boating Club

Heretaunga Boating Club Welcome to the Heretaunga Boating Club. We are a dinghy sailing club located on the Petone Foreshore at the north end of Wellington Harbour.

Our club is relaxed, friendly and family oriented. We sail most Saturdays from October to April. New members are always welcome. We have something to offer any sailor, whether you want to cruise, and afterwards enjoy our facilities, such as hot showers and a cold drink at the bar - or, if you want serious racing, there are a wide range of boat classes to choose from, each with plenty of trophies u

p for grabs. There is also a Rescue Boat close at hand, should the need arise. The Petone Foreshore is an ideal playground for sailing. There is Ramp access onto a wide sandy rock free beach. Winds come from around the compass at varying strengths. A moderate southerly wind is the favourite. Club sailing is predominantly on Saturdays, with junior training in the mornings, and racing in the afternoon. The season starts around the beginning of September, finishing around late April . The main classes of boat sailed at HBC are Optimist, Starling and Sunburst and we have small but enthusiastic Open fleet of Fireball, Jollyboat and Farr 3.1. . The Junior membership is thriving, with an excellent training programme for both junior and senior members, run by Yachting New Zealand certified coaches. You can't beat our view of Wellington Harbour, and the venue is often hired out to members for personal functions. Heretaunga has held many national and international events including co-hosting the 2002-03 Tauranga and Tanner cups with Muritai Yacht club. If you'd like to join us come down for a chat. There's plenty of friendly people to help you out or point you in the direction of those who can. We generally race on Saturday afternoons with Junior training in the mornings. So from around 9 am to 6 pm there will be someone there to help you.

HBC junior sailors and their parents had a great time at the 2026 Queen Charlotte Interislander Regatta last weekend. Sailing, exploring, socialising, hydrating, re-hydrating and even footballing, the trip had it all. Thanks to QCYC for hosting us and to all the parents that made it happen!

After a disrupted first month of sailing due to holidays we are now well underway with the second part of the season. The theme for the summer so far has been “resilience”. We’ve had strong northerlies buffet sailors with gusts from multiple directions, and steady but strong southerlies that c...

Congratulations to all who participated in the gusty HBC Regatta on Saturday at Petone Beach. We had 31 boats head out but only 10 make it across the finish line for our one and only race before abandonment. Well done to Morgan McKeown (Radial and Open), Aaron Judd of Paremata Boating Club (Laser), Rudi and Penny Hoy-Mack of Muritai Yacht Club (Sunburst) and Tilo Monien (winner and only Optimist finisher) for your wins.
A big thanks to our sponsors (Resene, Seaview Sails and Burnsco), and to all the volunteers and supporters for making the day a success!
Check out the drone footage to see some of the action and photos of some of our winners on the day.

Looks like objects have been speeding past the club at night as well as today during our Regatta!

A large flash that lit up the night sky over much of New Zealand was captured by a live feed camera and prompted speculation it could have been a meteor.
