Good news to see the numbers for rats caught is starting to rise again. From none to four !!! Although any catch is a good catch in our eyes. We think that Phil over at the Lakes is doing such a stunning job the rats don't even get across the road. Checking the traps isn't a quick job the girls were probably out for 5 hours today.
Their report follows
Slightly more success this week!
4 rats
1 mouse
1 possum

There was a meeting of the workers by chance at Reflection Point this morning . Dene was doing a major clean up
and planted a grove of kōwhai near the steel sculpture Kahu . Peter M and I planted the none natives in a nearby property. Better than the blackberries and nightshade there now then Janet and Lindsay were about half way through trap clearing and setting. It felt like spring is on the way

The team have now screwed down most of the deck beams on the bridge at Swampy Stream. There are two central boards which need to be ripped down to fit, which will happen in next couple of days 👍

A great email to receive !
"Today we spread and rolled 25 cubic metres of fine metal on all the hills and rough areas of the trail. Thanks to the team of Fred, John, Neville, Peter and Storm Waters Contracting Ltd. "
A great job guys, that will be a huge improvement on the Trail. Those ruts were a challenge on the bike.
Storm we couldn't do it without you and your team. There will be a community of very grateful trail users in Pauanui tonight.

Swampy Stream bridge is in place! Sitting next to SH25, this will be the entry point to the new 2.7km section of north bank trail we’ll be opening this summer. Great work as always from Andy and the volunteer team, and we’re also very grateful for the support of Higgins Construction who provided us with Traffic Management services, and Storm Waters for his construction expertise.

Tuis are very active on the Trail at the moment. This one is on a prunus companulata which has grown from a seed dropped in by birds from the neighbouring properties. There are several springing up and we enjoy the colour they bring. It looks great amongst the natives and certainly feeds the birds for a few months of winter. There were also 9 kotare (kingfishers) sitting along the edge of the boardwalk from the Waterways. A great sight. The view is from Picnic Point looking back over the Mikkelsen family seat to a beautiful grove of ponga. The three totem poles have been gifted to us from the designer. Who we'd love to acknowledge if we knew who he was! We get so many positive comments on this area which Julie and Rene Koke maintain. If your family would like to work magic like this on a section of the Trail let us know.

Truss is now assembled and ready to be installed on the north bank trail in the next few days. Watch this space…… 👀

Are you looking for a winter project to make in the workshop? We have just the project for keen Trail enthusiasts, build the ruru on the Trail a nest box or two? Ruru preciously known as morepork would really appreciate a safe nest location where we can put traps on the ground and sheet metal around the tree trunk to deter stouts, possoms and rats to give these birds a chance to safely raise their chicks!
We have been generously offered some locally milled cedar. and pine planks ideal for building these boxes. We have places on both sides of the river where ruru have been seen. Below is a diagram of the nesting box with full instructions available.
This ruru was photographed on the trail in an area where we have trapped many rats, stoats and possoms the first box will go here.
If you have heard ruru in the early morning around you home or bach read the article and build one out of plywood and encourage these birds to nest in Tairua and Pauanui

Eagle eyed travellers between Hikuai and Tairua recently might’ve noticed some construction activity near the SH25 Swampy Stream road bridge. We’ve started work on the trail crossing of Swampy Stream, which will be the entry point to the 2.7km first stage of the north bank trail when it opens this summer. Stay tuned for more pics!
