Tairua a huge thank you for combining with us to make the Gatsby Evening such a success. Tania who already has her name down for a section of Trail to maintain. As a professional gardener we are thrilled to have her on board. Sarah and Terry who are just getting into photography and will keep an eye out for great bird shots. Nigel who just wants to get on his bike and enjoy a 30km return trip in safety. Thanks to the pest control team who are already getting underway. We may be on different sides of the river but the feeling conveyed was we are in this together and the bridge will make that so much easier.

What a night!!

We’re tallying up the numbers but it’s safe to say last night’s Gatsby evening was a huge funding boost for the trail. A big thanks to all who organised and attended - what an amazing community we have. Check out What's on at Pauanui for a full set of photos. If you missed it but want to contribute to the trail, you can see all the options at tairuarivertrail.org.nz/donate.

About 4 pm today, an incoming tide and the river like glass. A perfect time to walk the Trail. John and Peter had been busy this morning with the skid loader getting a few loads of mulch then this afternoon I met them near Picnic Point cutting up a couple of cubes of firewood to be sold tomorrow night at the Gatsby Evening at Puka Park. As the tickets say all proceeds go towards the Tairua River Trail. Thanks Pat Courtney for organising this event. We are looking forward to a fun night.
A few photos from the trail, the maple really is this colour the works of art quirky and seeing Logan Humphrey's Kahu in situ very satisfying.
On stunning evenings like this we are so grateful that Gary Fowler, 13 years ago had the foresight to gather others around him and start building this - New Zealand's Best Little Trail.

We just walked the Trail to see how the last planting was looking. So exciting to see a magnificent kererū bending over the branch of a little kōwhai. If he is visiting now his family will be there later in the year for the blossoms. I just can't tell you how good this was. We have planted thousands of trees and grasses over 12 years. Kōwhai and Puriri are my favourites as much as they are to the kereru. To every one of you who have bought or grown on trees for us, planted and watered while out using the Trail, thank you so much . We are achieving our goal - a bird corridor. You can all feel very proud.

Jeanette here - I have been rather overenthusiastic with my $1million comments below. We are very grateful for whatever monies we receive of course either into our Give a Little page or through the Buy a Plank for $2,000 promotion. We are very confident that amongst the communities of Tairua and Pauanui or a philanthropic person anywhere else, there will be somebody who could take up the challenge of sponsoring the bridge. This bridge and trail for years to come will provide the only safe connection between these two small towns. At the moment there is no access except by car, the roads are very busy with no footpaths. So if we want families to explore the outdoors together we need to provide a safe environment. Talk to your neighbours, give family and friends a nudge a million dollars would give naming rights, be great for both local businesses and tourism which we need to thrive. To discuss this further contact Derrick Adams (chair) 0272244277 Hikuai District Trust - a registered charitable trust responsible for the Tairua River Trail

In January we asked on Linkedin if there was a landscape architect who could do some pro bono work for our future Tairua River Bridge. The next day we had a phone call from Chris Combrink of @ The Arch Christchurch- specialising in architectural visualisation and design. Chris had spent family holidays in Pauanui, loved what the community were creating with the Tairua River Trail and was keen to use his expertise to help us realise our dream. The next day he rang back to say that Andrew Norriss of @ Hone Studio, Auckland, a colleague and fellow landscape architect was keen to offer his time and experience also free of charge.
This generous offer was followed up by a trip to Pauanui for a couple of days, meeting some of our team, going out to both sides of the Tairua River. The drone, still photography and the creative work that Chris and Andrew has done for us is quite remarkable. The hours of work they have put into this project, bring to life what the neighbouring towns of Pauanui and Tairua could only dream about. This bridge will be built and it is community minded people like Andrew and Chris who make it a reality so much sooner than we could have hoped. Thanks so much.
