HG Yoga

HG Yoga Yoga has been the tool that keeps me centred and encouraged to live the life I was meant to live.

I have split my time between a career in the public sector in strategy and performance, and yoga teaching. My intent is that through demystifying yoga I can make it accessible to busy and everyday people. Whether that be in the work place, by attending regular classes, or attending workshops and retreats. Yoga offers a wonderful opportunity to create a healthier, more positive and passionate life.

This week in class we are focusing on the practice of tapas - one of the niyamas on the 8 Limbs of Yoga. Tapas, the practice of self-discipline, being able to sit in the uncomfortable times and find the blessings. This is a particular good practice for the month of June - practice sitting in the intensity and being silent, being curious. It's on the other side where the change happens, transformations.

And ffrom one of my favourite books The Yamas & Niyamas by Deborah Adele.

"Tapas has the sense of cooking ourselves in the fire of discipline to transform ourselves into something else.

Tapas is the day to day choice to burn non-supportive habits of the body and mind, choosing to forsake momentary pleasures for future rewards."

I’m at the gym and wondering why my ear pods are not working. Spent a few minutes pfaffing around only to realise they’d connected into the yoga studio. 😂. Woops…. Lucky yoga class as I am playing yoga music

Our chant this week in one of my classes - chanting is one of the most amazing things we can do. I remember being both too embarrassed and thinking it was too weird, ie too woo woo for me. But now I understand the science more from actually doing it and feeling the effects in my body.

If you listen closely, your breath is already repeating a mantra.

In yoga, mantra is traditionally understood as a “tool for the mind”—a way of placing and steadying attention. Or, as Rolf Sovik described it: “a thought that protects, guides, and leads.”

So’ham (pronounced “so-hum”) is a mantra that moves with the breath. Rather than creating the sound, you listen for it.

Inhale: a subtle so
Exhale: a quiet hum

In traditional yoga teachings, these syllables are associated with a deeper meaning.

So (“That”) refers to pure, undivided consciousness.
Aham (“I”) refers to the whole of who you take yourself to be.

Together, so’ham: “I am That.”

As your attention settles into the mantra within the breath, its meaning becomes less conceptual and more direct—
less identification with each passing thought,
more familiarity with the awareness in which those thoughts arise.

Because the breath is continuous, this yoga technique can be threaded through ordinary moments—walking to your next meeting, looking out the window, even waiting for the toast to pop.

A quiet thread of recognition, always available.

A few interesting reflections. The yoga sculpt coz people like it, I totally get, but I’m still yoga is yoga and let’s call everything else what it is. Some yoga is closer to jazzercise, very enjoyable as I like to move my body but not yoga. Each to their own 😁😂

some silly things I said in yoga classes this week, there seemed to be many, so many I can't recall them all:
- chair poops rather than chair pose
- big nose rather than just nose - and that took me off into the story of when I told a man (jokingly) to press the lift button with his nose because his hands were full, and he turned around to give me a filthy look, appropriately because who would say that, and he had a big nose
- childs pose multiple times throughout class when standing, moving into savasana - very confusing for everyone

It’s here - the Scorpio full moon and much more. A nice class this morning built around the full moon - moon salutation, gentle but strong surrendering with some soft tunes today.

Talking about ujjayi breathing in yoga class last night. I feel like we don’t have this foundational piece in yoga these days, we’ve focused on creative movements which can be nice but I prefer traditional yoga - this is what allow us to really get into our yoga practice. I see many people mouth breathing, and acknowledge that sometimes there is something going on that makes nostril breathing challenging but we also sometimes haven’t tried to change. That might be provocative for some but it’s a good question to ask ourselves , which is what the practice of yoga is all about. Pranayama, asana and self-enquiry.

Ujjayi Pranayama, or "ocean breath," is a rhythmic yoga breathing technique that involves slightly constricting the throat while inhaling and exhaling slowly through the nose with lips sealed. It creates a soft, audible, soothing sound similar to ocean waves or a whisper. This practice builds internal heat, increases focus, and calms the nervous system.
