🏀 Wheelchair Basketball Update! 🏀

The 2026 season tipped off a couple of weeks ago at the Healthvision Festival of Disability Sport in Tauranga, with our local players Luke and Rawiri getting a great first hit-out for the year! 💪

The event also hosted the 2026 Awards 🏆, where Luke took home both Sportsman and the Supreme Award Winner of the Year! What an incredible achievement!👏

Luke now has a busy few months ahead, travelling across the Tasman each week to compete in the Australian Wheelchair Basketball Men's National League with southern districts Spartans. A fantastic opportunity to build on an outstanding 2025/26 season. 🇦🇺

Next up is locally is the National League Round 1 in Whangārei (20–21 June), with Rawiri and Roy playing in this event!

This year we are focusing on growing wheelchair basketball in our region and supporting more local players to step up to National League level. We're excited to see more athletes from the Manawatu involved from Hamilton events onwards. We are also hosting Round 2 of the National League which is pretty exciting and will help drive the continued growth of the sport in our community also! If you interested to be involved please get in touch!

What a day at Pongaroa School on Tuesday giving the whole school a chance to jump in some chairs and give Wheelchair Basketball a go! What a great and skilled group of students with a few photos below showing wide range of students throughout the day between years 1-8!

Just a huge thanks to school for allowing this to happen and Sam from Sport Manawatū for supporting this session!

Looking forward to providing a chance for some more Tararua students starting on Monday 🦽🏀!

Great article on Team Manawatū’s 2026 Halberg Games MVP, Jakob Openshaw-Clarke, sharing his journey and how he’s now pushing for more opportunities in the disability space, empowering others to speak up.
We’re incredibly lucky to have such a strong young leader representing our region. On top of everything, he’s also celebrating his 17th birthday today 🎉👏

Happy Birthday, Jakob!
