Behind every Rail-X event is a passionate community of volunteers.
For nearly 30 years, Scale Rail and the Manawatū European Model Railway Club have brought Rail-X to Palmerston North. Creating an event that continues to spark curiosity, creativity, and nostalgia for thousands of visitors every year.
What started as a shared passion for model railways has grown into something much bigger. For many organisers, the hobby began in childhood and has stayed with them throughout their lives, bringing together generations through creativity, craftsmanship, and hands-on fun.
Rail-X is about far more than trains. Behind every working layout are countless hours of carpentry, painting, wiring, miniature modelling, electronics, landscaping, and now even computer programming and automation. Modern displays feature animated scenes, moving vehicles, working forestry operations, cranes, bridges, and fully automated train systems that bring miniature worlds to life.
This year’s event will feature more than 20 working layouts from across the lower North Island, showcasing British, European, American, and New Zealand railway scenes from vintage to modern eras. Visitors can also enjoy Lego, Meccano and engineering displays, trade stalls, and for the first time ever, a large working Radio Control Truck display in the Bell Hall.
“The best part is seeing the faces of young children watching the trains and discovering all the tiny working details hidden throughout the layouts.”
Events like Rail-X continue to connect generations, while younger enthusiasts are helping shape the future of the hobby through digital technology, 3D printing, social media, and automation.
