Next Month is Māori New Year and to celebrate we’re holding our Puanga Festival 10 July. 🎉

This year's event will be headlined by REI, one of Aotearoa's most exciting contemporary artists. Known for his energetic live shows, REI has performed at some of New Zealand's biggest festivals, including WOMAD, Splore and Electric Avenue.

Returning to the Puanga stage is local favourite Forte, with additional performers and entertainment still to be announced.

There will be plenty for tamariki and whānau, including inflatables, a photobooth, and a dedicated kids area hosted in partnership with Te Manawa. Visitors can also browse stalls showcasing local crafts and products and enjoy a range of food vendors serving up delicious kai throughout the event.

This event is free, accessible and family-friendly. We’re kicking off from 3pm at the Central Energy Trust Arena Pit Lane.

Bring your friends and whānau and join us as we welcome the Māori New Year together.

Behind every Rail-X event is a passionate community of volunteers.

For nearly 30 years, Scale Rail and the Manawatū European Model Railway Club have brought Rail-X to Palmerston North. Creating an event that continues to spark curiosity, creativity, and nostalgia for thousands of visitors every year.

What started as a shared passion for model railways has grown into something much bigger. For many organisers, the hobby began in childhood and has stayed with them throughout their lives, bringing together generations through creativity, craftsmanship, and hands-on fun.

Rail-X is about far more than trains. Behind every working layout are countless hours of carpentry, painting, wiring, miniature modelling, electronics, landscaping, and now even computer programming and automation. Modern displays feature animated scenes, moving vehicles, working forestry operations, cranes, bridges, and fully automated train systems that bring miniature worlds to life.

This year’s event will feature more than 20 working layouts from across the lower North Island, showcasing British, European, American, and New Zealand railway scenes from vintage to modern eras. Visitors can also enjoy Lego, Meccano and engineering displays, trade stalls, and for the first time ever, a large working Radio Control Truck display in the Bell Hall.

“The best part is seeing the faces of young children watching the trains and discovering all the tiny working details hidden throughout the layouts.”

Events like Rail-X continue to connect generations, while younger enthusiasts are helping shape the future of the hobby through digital technology, 3D printing, social media, and automation.

Come along and experience Rail-X 2026 🚂

We're replacing over 5,000 embankment seats around the Arena 1 Oval - with sustainability front in mind.

These seats have been in place for more than 25 years and have started to oxidise and become brittle due to years of sun exposure.

This project is a great example of collaboration across Council, bringing together expertise from our project delivery, Venues + Events, and waste minimisation teams to find the best outcome for both Arena and our community.

Stage one is now underway, with 2,375 seats being replaced in the next month or so, with the remaining seats scheduled for later this year. The new seats are being manufactured locally by Mouldings Unlimited in Fielding - and because Council owns the moulds, we can continue replacing seats efficiently into the future.

Even better, almost everything removed from site is being recycled or repurposed.
The old plastic seats are being turned into recycled products like rubbish bag, rollers, and outdoor furniture
Timber supports are finding new life as planter boxes and garden edging
Steel bolts and fixings are also being recycled

A great result for the Arena - and for waste minimisation in Palmerston North.

Meet Cindy – one of the driving forces behind bringing conferences, events and unforgettable experiences to Palmerston North.

Cindy first joined the team in 2009 on maternity cover and, as she puts it, "never left." Since then, she's worked her way from Coordinator to Team Leader and is currently stepping into additional leadership responsibilities while covering for the lovely Ash.

If you've attended an event at Palmy Venues, there's a good chance Cindy has played a role in making it happen. After helping deliver hundreds of events every year for more than 15 years, she's worked across everything from conferences and exhibitions to community events and major sporting fixtures.

One of the things Cindy loves most about her role is the variety. "No two days are the same. We have such a diverse range of events across our venues, there's always something different happening. I also get to work with a great team."

Next week, Cindy will be representing Palmy Venues + Events at BEIA MEETINGS in Auckland – New Zealand's premier business events trade show. The event brings together conference organisers, venues and industry professionals from across the country, creating opportunities to build relationships and attract future conferences and events to our city.

"It's such a great opportunity to meet new contacts and chat with existing clients within the business events sector. Those connections can help bring conferences and events to Palmerston North, which benefits not only our venues but the wider city as well."

What keeps Cindy passionate about the industry is seeing months of planning come to life. "My favourite part is seeing all the hard work pay off and watching an event run smoothly on the day."

She says one thing that often surprises people about working behind the scenes is how quickly event teams need to adapt. "Even when you've dotted every i and crossed every t, things can change at the last minute. You have to think on your feet and adjust as needed."

When asked what she loves most about attracting events to Palmerston North, Cindy doesn't hesitate. "It's showing that Palmy can deliver an event just as well – if not better – than some of the main centres."

Outside of work, Cindy spends most of her time keeping up with her three kids and, after a busy event, her perfect way to recharge is simple: relaxing at home with the family.

Good luck to Cindy, Emma, Lisa and Casey-Lee as they head to BEIA MEETINGS next week to showcase everything Palmerston North has to offer and help bring even more great events to our city.

Meet Lisa – one of the friendly faces helping bring events to life at Palmy Venues + Events.

Lisa has been part of the team on and off since 2007, making her one of our most experienced team members. Over the years, she’s worked across countless events, helping support everyone from community groups to major national events.

When asked about her favourite event, Lisa says it's hard to choose just one. However, a National Special Olympics event from her early days has always stayed with her. "It made me so happy watching everyone do their very best in every event and how proud of themselves and each other they were. It was truly just all smiles and fun. At the end they had a disco in Arena 2 and everyone had the best time dancing and singing together."

One of Lisa’s favourite things about her role is the people she gets to work with. "I get to work with some really great people. Not just my workmates, but fantastic clients and venue users too. I've seen a huge range of events over the years, and it's always nice to know you've played a part in bringing them together."

This year alone, Lisa has already managed close to 1,200 bookings this year. Recently she’s been supporting events including the Manawatū Woodworkers Show, Red Cross Book Sale, Poultry & Pigeon Show, the NZIB National Championships this week and the upcoming Rail X. "I really enjoy working with these groups. Their interests and hobbies mean so much to them, and they take every opportunity to showcase what they do. They're wonderful people to work with."

She's collected plenty of memorable stories along the way too. "I'll never forget Emma chasing Ja Rule through the complex for a photo opportunity, and we were pretty stoked when we said hi to Nelly and he replied, 'What up shorties'."

When she's not helping coordinate events, Lisa is a Mum to 3 girls, plays and coaches hockey, loves the outdoors and describes herself as a bit of a bird nerd.

After a busy event, Lisa's favourite way to unwind is simple: heading home to spend time with her family.

What a page-turner of a weekend! 📚

The Red Cross Book Sale was one for the storybooks, with an incredible turnout from our community. Judging by the crowds, it's safe to say Palmerston North is full of bookworms! 🐛
