During our recent AC interclub, Our GC Captian Neil Stantiall completed his requirement for the QC Bronze award .. Playing off a 14 Handicap Neil completed a 10 hoop break without Extra Turns even, and even managed to hold on and Win the match . The challenge now is for Neil to get the Silver award. Come on Neil you can do it .

This weekend, Rose Gardens Croquet club hosts the Honda Cars Manawatu sponsored Golf Croquet Levels Tournament.... we have players from all over the Lower North Island coming ro tey and win their respected Grades. Head lining the Open Grade Is ever present at RGCC tournaments The Bullen Family Brian, Nathan and Jessica they go up against Local Hopeful Josh Smith who has held the title for this tournament for the last Three years.

The Four Plus Grade has players from Wairarapa, Levin, Hereatanga, Feilding as well as Rose Gardens, Players to Watch in this Grade, Wairarapa stalwart Russell Ward, Heretaunga Croquet Clubs Neil Armitage as well as Locals Neil Stantiall and John Doolan.

The 8 Plus Tournament has the biggest field to date with 12 Players competing for that title, Players from Gisborne, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay, Feilding Croquet Club, and lots of Locals. This Section is wide open with any player able to come through and take the title.

Thank You to Honda Cars Manawatu for there contuined support of this Tournament, without. This sponsorship this tournament would not be as successful as it is.

It is with sadness that I report the death of Gordon Smith, Rose Gardens Croquet club Foundation Member, Croquet NZ’s, Croquet Manawatu/ Wanaganui and Rose Gardens Life Members and one of the pioneers of modern Golf Croquet in New Zealand.

Gordon began his croquet career in the late 1970s in Canterbury and had early success in 1981 when he won the South Island Men’s Championship, the South Island Level Singles (for players in an intermediate range of handicaps) and the South Island Handicap Singles all at the same AC tournament. He won the New Zealand Men’s Handicap Singles in 1985 and as a consequence of that win won the Arthur Ross Memorial, which was then played as a match between the winners of the Men’s and Women’s Handicap Singles at the New Zealand Championships. Gordon remained a strong player for many years at New Zealand tournaments.



Gordon was one of the leaders of the development of Golf Croquet in its modern form in New Zealand. He was New Zealand’s first representative on the WCF Golf Croquet Rules Committee. He chaired that committee for some time and contributed significantly to the development of the Rules and also to golf croquet refereeing in New Zealand. He was always prepared to contribute to the administration of the sport within New Zealand. During his time in the Manawatu Association he served as its Association Referee and, from 2001/2 to 2005/6, as the Association’s President. He also took on national administration roles, first as a CNZ Councillor for 3 years from 2002 and then as one of the Vice-Presidents for a further 3 years from 2005.



Gordon and his wife Marlene later returned to Christchurch, where he served as the Canterbury Association’s President in 2011/12 and 2012/13. That was a very stressful time in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquakes, which severely affected a number of the Canterbury clubs and, at a personal level, caused severe damage to Gordon’s and Marlene’s house.

Gordon's passion and love and Values for Croquet and Rose Gardens can still be felt at the club today.

Palmerston North’s Rose Gardens club member Josh Smith won Singles and Doubles titles at the club’s Golf Croquet tournament over the weekend.

Players were from Whakatane, Hawkes Bay, Wellington and local Manawatu-Wanganui clubs. On Saturday Smith and partner Amy Gust (also representing Rose Gardens) won the Open Doubles and the all-Wellington Handicap Doubles final was won by Ross and Lynne Dalley from Annette Barnes & Sita Bandaranayake.

Singles competitions were held on Sunday, with two Levels events and one Handicap event. In the Open Level Singles Josh Smith headed the table after the round robin, despite losing to Helen Reeves (Heretaunga club, Havelock North) in the last round, and reversed that result in the final against Helen and took the title 10 hoops to 5.
The Level Singles Division II final was won by Whakatane visitor Nigel Robinson from Rose Arthur of Levin, again reversing the result of their round robin game.

The Handicap Singles final was an all Rose Gardens match won by Tony Collins from club President Pam Green.

Last Sunday saw our club Captian Josh Smith play in the Don Reyland Stars Manawatu/ wanganui Final, with four clubs represented it was a good time to show case handicap play knowledge . Josh being on a minus four had to give away 8 extra turns each game. With Amy Gust( Marton Croquet Club Rose Arthur (Levin) and Rob Barry (Fielding Croquet Club) all on fours the cards were definitely stacked against him but all players played well and each ended the day on Three wins and Three loses ( Just as well for Josh as he's the manager of the National Final)

Amy Gust is the Manawatu Wanaganui winner with a Plus four count back from the others.

Congratulations Amy represent our area with pride we will all be behind you as you go one better than last year ☺️

This weekend sees the thrid of major tournaments RGCC runs every year, this time it's our GC tournament, Doubles on Saturday and singles on Sunday .. this year we trying something new and including Open Doubles as well as the always popular Handicap doubles.

Sunday we will then turn our attention to the singles again both handicap singles and Levels singles. With many being run in level grades we have our open Singles which has okays with handicaps minus 4 through to Four. Then the divisions of Handicap singles. with Rose Gardens Croquet club members on huge numbers as well as always supportive members from Hawkes Bay and wellington.

A mixed day for our superstars .... Amy had the two top seeds in the block to play yesterday win one and likely through to the knock out after already having three match wins against higher ranked players, she gave it her absolute all, although Callum left it to the last match to decide what that block will look like, he played James Duggan ... James wins three way tie for last spot with Amy, James and Callum, but Callum wasn't about to let that happen and won in straight games, to qualifier to the top 16 ..... Where Callum has Drawn current New Zealand Champ Levi Franks ....

Amy is in plate block B along with four other New Zealanders... .

In other Rose Gardens connections Paul Kaiser and Joel Steele, both ex RGCC Players now making other other clubs stronger with their Present and showing a bit of RGCC flare, Joel beat highly Ranked Blake Fields in his Block yesterday to first top of his Block, and Joel will now play the lone Aussie in the knockout Timothy Wright.

Paul Kaiser finished second in his block to the high ranked Egyptian, Taught by Current World GC Champ Moe Karem, he now plays another NZer Robbie Spooner in the first round knockout. However if both Joel and Paul win their first rounds they will play each other in the second round.

The Bullen Clan is also preforming well, with Nathan toping his block it's a shame he had to beat up our Callum and Amy to do it .... Well done Nathan, he now goes against Te Kiri King (the King of Park Croquet Club Hawera ) in the first round of the Knock out.

And Jessica Bullen narrowly missed out on the knock outs and will compete in the Plate :) can't wait to see the Bullen Clan back on our Lawns soon

A bit of news that slipped under our radar for the time being, one of our Members travelled to the sunny Hawkes Bay to give her hand at the Golf Croquet Nationals, While the block play didn't go her way , Izzy kept her head down and kept making hoops and in the end, ended up being the Runner Up in the Plate event at the Golf Croquet Nationals, Congratulations Isobelle Alan Ward a great success for you, look forward to seeing you down on the Lawns showing us how it's done.

This week, Two of out Juniors are off to the World Under 21 Championships, Rose Gardens Croquet club couldn't be prouder at your successes and seeing you guys preform well on the world stage, Amy and Callum Best of Luck .. will be watching your results and live stream where we can represent RGCC well and show them what we can do . Also ex Junior Members Paul Kaiser and Joel Steele will show them all how RGCC swing :) .
