We told you it would be a Total Harvesting Ltd Outram Rodeo in association with Hyslop Rural Transport Ltd on Waitangi Day to remember and it sure didn’t disappoint!

A huge thank you to our sponsors and to all our rodeo fans who turned up in big numbers just as we have seen all around the country this season to support rodeo, undoubtedly New Zealand’s favourite rural sport.

And a big thank you to the cowboys and cowgirls, many of whom have travelled from the north and from all around the south to put on what was an amazing show, and thanks to the good fella upstairs for not turning on the tap and making it a wet day, in fact, that early sprinkle was perfect, next to no dust!!

Some special moments and some exceptional rodeo action, that’s how we’ll remember this year’s event.
Outram was the highest paying single rodeo event this season and as a result we truly had the best of the best come to our little town.

And what happened, in a day of incredible action has totally changed the top eight contenders for national finals qualification in quite a number of events because of the prize money on offer.

Here’s just a few of the day’s highlights:

𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡!
Hanmer Springs cowboy Fred McRae has been on the cusp of breaking open in the bull ride contest for quite a while now and today at Outram was the day with the young cowboy marking 66pts for the only qualified ride in the Dean Wooltorton Builder sponsored 2nd Divi Bull Ride.

With high hopes of making a qualified ride in his first open Bull Ride contest he drew a bull with the perfect name, ‘High Hopes’ but unfortunately ‘High Hopes’ had a different plan in mind for Fred and ‘buck off’ was written beside his name. But congratulations cowboy, you now get to ride the best bucking bulls in the country and we wish you all the best.

From just down the road from Hanmer Springs it was Culverden cowgirl Georgia Henderson who was the second contestant to move into the ‘Open’ ranks after she won the R.W. Richards Contracting sponsored 2nd Division Breakaway Roping with a 4.960 sec run. Congratulations cowgirl.

𝗔𝗟𝗟-𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗪𝗚𝗜𝗥𝗟 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗚𝗢𝗧 𝗔 𝗕𝗜𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚!
Fairlie cowgirl Kate Hughes has been way out in front in the All-Around cowgirl standings until a couple of weeks ago when Brooke Atkinson made a time in the Breakaway Roping and then all her Barrel Race money and the Breakaway placing on ‘Tango’ at Wairoa saw her move immediately into second place in the All-Around Champion Cowgirl of new Zealand standings, but still a fair way back from Kate.

That all changed today with the big money on offer at Outram.
Brooke won the Barrel Race, Kate didn’t place, Brooke collected almost $1700 for the win and now is only $935 and change behind Kate in the All-Around. Just maybe Kate might be back in the Breakaway contest because that might end up being the decider between these two incredible Barrel Racing cowgirls!

𝗕𝗜𝗚 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗟-𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗪𝗕𝗢𝗬 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗢!
Money talks!
And it talked Matamata cowboy Kurtis Pertab into second place (up from 8th) in the All-Around Champion Cowboy of New Zealand standings today after he and Team Roping Header partner Bevan Clayton-Green stopped the clock in 9.98 secs to more than double their season earnings so far and claim the biggest prize of the season in this event, a staggering $2059.60 EACH to see them move to the top of the Header and Heeler standings and Kurtis moves from 8th to second in the All-Around Champion Cowboy standings where he is still $2315 and change behind the leader, Taumarunui cowboy Will Potts who pocketed a pretty cool $1117.20 after winning his fifth Rope and Tie event this season on his awesome 10yo gelding ‘Lockdown’

And just keep an eye on Rotorua cowboy Broc Maki who moved from 7th in the All-Round standings to third after he and Deanna McCarthy placed second in the Team Roping today. It’s definitely getting tighter at the top!

𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗢𝗡 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘!
He’s our ‘hometown cowboy’ and we hoped he would defend the title he won here last year along with the NZRCA Rookie and Open Steer Wrestling title but it wasn’t to be with ‘no time’ written beside Ryan Adam and his horse ‘Streaker’s names.

But what did happen in the Claas Harvest Centre sponsored Steer Wrestling is Cambridge cowboy Klay Lanigan went to the pay window to collect his winnings, a very cool $1178 and he is now just $57.00 behind Ryan and legendary cowboy Rex Church moved up from 15th place into the top 8 and a chance to make yet another NFR at Waikouaiti Rodeo on the 14th March.

'𝗦𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗧𝗘' 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗖𝗘 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗜𝗦!
If you had to pick the name from ‘Snow White’ and the 7 dwarfs to sum up Reece Valois’s day it could only be ‘Happy’!

In the Off Grid Engineering sponsored Open Saddle Bronc Ride, Blenheim cowboy Reece Valois made the only qualified ride on board ‘Snow White’ and boy, was he happy going to the pay window to collect his $722 in prize money which puts him with reach of the leader, Lane Whitelock, now just $467 and change ahead!

𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗘!
Another big moment from today.
NZRCA defending Team Roping Champions, sisters Ariana (Header) and Kiwa (Heeler) moved up from 15th in the standing to 5th. A good run tomorrow and look out!!

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗦!
Geraldine cowboy Sam Church won his 12th title for the season today in the All Septic and Drainage Ltd sponsored Open Ba****ck contest and is looking very much like he will be the one to beat if any other cowboy wants to be crowned to 2026 Ba****ck Champion of NZ

Congratulations too to Cloncurry (QLD) cowgirl Brandee Ferguson who won the Peter Lyon Shearing sponsored Open Breakaway Roping contest, her first NZ win with Andrew Jamison’s calf roping horse (name?) under her saddle which sees the Aussie cowgirl move up from 11th place to fifth in the standings to be a possible contender for the NFR at Waikouaiti Rodeo on the 14th March

And well done to Te Awamutu cowgirl Riley Wood who collected her first Open Barrel Race cheque after breaking open at Mid Northen Rodeo on the 4th March.

𝟰-𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗡𝗭𝗥𝗖𝗔 𝗕𝗨𝗟𝗟 𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗦𝗔𝗬’𝗦 ‘𝗟𝗘𝗧’𝗦 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗬 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗬’
Our Secretary Marty Deans has been around Rodeo all his life and he’s a significant part of rodeo I NZ and here at our Club. Our Bull Contractors, local lads D & J Bucking Bulls decided to name a bull after him, he’s called ‘Let’s Party Marty’ and he’s an awesome competitor and has been unridden for the last few seasons.

Today, Rotorua cowboy, the 4-time Champion Bull Rider of New Zealand, Johnson Davis drew this bull and they danced together in the Yong Bros sponsored open bull ride contest for the requisite 8 seconds to make the only qualified bull ride of the day for 77pts

So as the sun sets on an amazing day of Rodeo here at Outram, we guess it’s time to ‘Let’s Party Marty’!
But not too hard, we’ve got the Southland Rodeo Association Inc Rodeo in the morning, gates open 8.30am for a 9.00am start!

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗟 𝗪𝗘 𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗢!
And one of the feature events on the card is the Steer Wrestling contest where our very own Ryan Adam, the current Steer Wrestling Champion of New Zealand and his awesome 13yo gelding 'Streaker' will be trying to defend their hometown Rodeo title that they won last year in 5.91 secs

‘Crusty’ as he is commonly known (but has no idea where the nickname came from) started Steer Wrestling 4 years ago after encouragement from the big unit himself, the 2013 NZRCA Steer Wrestling Champion Chris Hood. Ryan was keen and wanted to get be as good as he could be so who better to learn from than the champion Australian Steer Wrestling cowboy Shane Iker.

Ryan went over to Alton Downs in Queensland and had some time with Shane Iker and his wife Jorja (Champion Breakaway Roper and Barrel Racer) and their talented cowboy son Jordan and their up and coming young cowboy son Mason who is mean as with a lariat in his hand like his dad.

Ryan won the first Australian Professional Rodeo Association event he entered at Lowood Rodeo roping off ‘Streaker’ and he knew he just had to bring this awesome horse back to NZ and fortunately, Shane agreed to a sale!

Since then, Ryan has broken open after it seemed he took ‘forever’ to make that final trip to the pay window (that’s the first photo) and since then he has flourished. At the top of the list of achievements for this cowboy was winning both the Rookie and Open Steer Wrestling titles last season and in that season he also won his hometown (Club Member) Outram rodeo!

This season he leads the Steer Westling standings (albeit by just $74.10, the top 8 separated by just $1235), way less than even the money on offer at the NFR hosted by the Rodeo Club.

And he also has two of the top four fastest times this season including the fastest, a slick 3.60 secs to win at Millers Flat on Boxing Day.

This weekend at Outram is the highest paying rodeo before National Finals. It will help define who is going to make the top eight and therefore who might be the 2026 New Zealand Champion Steer Wrestling Champion.

We’ve got all of the top Steer Wrestlers in the country coming to town.
Ryan will be second out in the performance section of the Steer Wrestling contest, just after lunch and the grand Entry.

𝟮 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗟 𝟮 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗡!
Aaron Church Junior has followed in the footsteps of his whanau and the Church name in New Zealand Rodeo is written alongside many, many championship titles.

Aaron Church Junior has 3-times added his name and the Church name to the history books of our sport.

He was the 2023 All-Around New Zealand Champion Cowboy and the 2017 and 2023 New Zealand Rope and Tie Champion and this season he is in contention to be competing at the National Finals Rodeo at Waikouaiti Rodeo on the 14th March as he currently sits in eighth place in Rope and Tie, fourth place in Team Roping (Header) with his partner Jayde on the heels and he’s placed fourth and well within striking distance of leader Will Potts for his second All-Around Champion Cowboy of New Zealand title.

On Waitangi Day at Outram Rodeo you’ll get to see this outstanding cowboy competing in his events as he hopes to make multiple visits to the pay window as we draw closer to the end of the season and the finalising of the top eight spots in each open event to see who will become champion.

Also making the trip south from Taupo is 2-time NZRCA Steer Wrestling Champion and the 2020 Team Roping Heeler champion Waylon Gibson.

Waylon is one of twin brothes in an incredibly competitive rodeo family that travel the lengths and breadths of our great country rodeoing from town to town with his brother Kyle, his Steer Wrestling, Team Roping cowboy dad David and his mum, Justine, the inaugural All-Around Champion Cowgirl of New Zealand who Barrel Races, Breakaway Ropes and she is arguably one of the best hazers in the business!

And as a family they are a huge part of the Taupo Rodeo Club.

These two cowboys are just a glimpse at the incredible line-up of competitors who will be at our annual Waitangi Day rodeo on Friday and what a huge day it will be!!

Waylon comes into town at Outram placed 3rd in the All-Around Champion Cowboy of New Zealand title race, a title he has not won before and he also sits 2nd in the Team Roping Heeler standings with his good mate Kaitaia Cowboy Ryan O’Callaghan on heading duties and is second by just $74.10 behind the standings leader and defending champion Ryan Adam in the Steer Wrestling contest.

The Outram Rodeo is the highest paying rodeo until the NFR at Waikouaiti on the 14th March when we find out who our new New Zealand Champions will be.

As we get to the pointy end of the season our Outram Rodeo with the big prize money on ffer is a very important rodeo as the cowboys and cowgirls try to earn that all important top 8 place in the standings to compete at the National Finals Rodeo to then attempt to go on and the win the greatest prize in our sport, that of New Zealand Champion.

𝟯 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟯 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗟-𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗪𝗕𝗢𝗬 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗭𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗜𝗦 𝗔𝗧 𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗠!

But truth be told, that’s selling this 2nd generation amazing cowboy short.

On his unbelievable resume alongside his three All-Around Champion Cowboy of New Zealand titles sits a record 13 times NZ Rodeo Cowboys Association Rope and Tie Champion titles, and a record 9 times NZ Rodeo Cowboys Association Team Roping Header Champion titles and the incredibly prestigious 2023 Bob Brown Cowboy of The Year award.

This champion cowboy learned his skills from his dad, the legendary Pat McCarthy who won back-to-back Team Roping header titles in 1995 and 1996 and in 1975 he won his first NZRCA Steer Wrestling title and in 1982 won his second title in this event.

In 2015, in recognition for all he has done and continues to do for our sport he also was named the Bob Brown Cowboy of The Year.

Patrick comes to Outram placed fifth in the All-Around standings, well within reach of the leader, 18yo Taumarunui based cowboy Will Potts but even though this young gun is less than half Patricks age, the ‘old fella’ knows how to win!

Will also leads the Rope and Tie standings but the 13-time champ is just $693.50 behind him, that can change in a heartbeat!

And Patrick sits in eighth in the Team Roper Heeler standings – yes, he’s ‘changed sides’ to rope with his dad this season and they are on the cusp of making finals and then ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!!

Nerves of steel and in the heat of finals rodeo, will experience be the difference?

Patrick, with ‘Pete’ under his saddle hold two of the top three fastest times of the season so far in the Rope and Tie contest, the fastest at Maniototo with a 9.690 sec run. And they won at , the host of the National Finals Rodeo on the 14th March last season with 11.25 secs, it’s a happy hunting ground for them.

Will’s fastest time is a very respectable fourth fastest for the season with a 10.230 sec run at Rerewhakaaitu on his 10yo gelding ‘Lockdown’. There’s no doubt they have plenty left in the tank.

So far this season Patrick has won three titles, Will has won five!

To watch these two amazing cowboys is worth the price of admission alone!

They are as good as any cowboys in the world (and the ‘old fella’ has won all around the world – and still would!)

But we’ve got the top 20 Rope & Tie cowboys in the country coming to Outram all ready to deny these two any glory! This is so not a two-cowboy race, this is Rope & Tie as good as it gets!

Let’s celebrate Waitangi Day, our amazing country and New Zealand’s favourite rural sport, the one we know and love, the one called rodeo!!

He’s the grandson of the Father of Rodeo, Merv Church OBE, his dad John won is a 2-time NZRCA Bull Ride champion and his late Uncle Dion won 7 Open Bull Ride titles, more than any other cowboy in NZ Rodeo history including a four-in-a-row streak between 1993-1996 (inclusive)

This season, Johnson sits in second place in the national standings on the road to maybe securing his fifth NZRCA Bull Ride title, right now just $64.60 behind the leader, Waipawa cowboy Klay Ward who, like Johnson is heading south to see if he can claim a piece of the big money on offer this weekend at Outram which is the biggest paying rodeo until the National Finals at Waikouaiti Rodeo on the 14th March.

We’ve got 16 awesome bull riders who will be drawn up against some of the rankest bulls in New Zealand from D & J Bucking Bulls you don’t want to miss this.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟱-𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗟-𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗡 𝗜𝗡 𝟱 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦!
The name Church is synonymous with New Zealand Rodeo.

And at 55 years of age the 5-time All-Around Champion of New Zealand Rodeo is also a record 9-time NZRCA Ba****ck Champion, a 2-time NZRCA Bull Ride champion and also has the 2011 NZRCA Steer Wrestling NZRCA Champion title on his resume and he’s still competing but now just in the Steer Wrestling contest after a shoulder injury last year saw him have to sit out the Ba****ck Event (wiser heads helped him with that decision but there’s talk he’ll be back next season to have a crack at title #10!!)

He’s the man, the myth, the legend!

He is the one and only Rex Church, now based in Poolburn, Central Otago who will make the couple of hours trip down to join us for our Outram Rodeo on Waitangi Day with wife Mitch and his amazing son Victor on hazing duties.

It’s always exciting to watch this cowboy in the arena and we look forward to welcoming him and his family back to Outram, let’s not count how many times you’ve been here or we’ll all feel that little bit older!

But from all of us, we wish you all the best cowboy.

A winning Steer Wrestling run (or placing) and you’re in, or maybe heading up to being part of another National Finals Rodeo, another big number but one we’d love to know (How many National Finals have you been to cowboy?)

At Mataura he went deep in the pen to make his catch to place third. There’s a 50+ year career of try in this cowboy, if anyone can get it one it’s a cowboy with the name Church.

The Breakaway Roping event is only in its third official season in New Zealand and our cowgirls and junior breakaway ropers have been running amazing times this season (a New Zealand record 1.940 seconds set by Osharn Jackson and ‘Manawa’ at Warkworth) and the overall quality of runs is through the roof!

At Outram in 6 days time we have six of the best, in fact no, we have 11 of the top 12 Open Breakaway Ropers in the country coming to try and earn their spot in the top eight in the standings to compete at Waikouaiti on the 14th of March at the NZRCA National Finals Rodeo for the New Zealand title.

There’s just $360 plus change between first placed Omakau cowgirl Sky Sanders and ‘Cappi’ and second placed Cromwell cowgirl Sophie Smith and ‘Rougar’ then another $533 back to third placed Queenstown cowgirl Zoe Johnston with ‘Jagger’ under her saddle.

Truth is, with the biggest prize money on offer between here and the National finals, this event can and will make a big difference in deciding who heads to finals with an advantage.

They will be slick, they will be quick, don’t blink or you’ll miss these amazing ‘cowgirls of the lariat’.
