Orewa Longboard Club

Orewa Longboard Club Our Longboarding Surf club is based out of the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club We welcome anyone keen to learn or advance in the art of longboarding.

The club was set up towards the end of 2003 following interest from a wide spectrum of surfers predominantly from the Hibiscus Coast/North Harbour areas of Auckland. The aim of the club is to provide a social, competitive and networking base for interested surfers/longboarders. The club presently has around 120 paid up members (male and female)
who range in age from teens to +50’s. The club has a

low key friendly approach
and is open to anyone who is interested (you don’t have to be a Kelly Slater lookalike or a pro-surfer).

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everybody from our surf fam to yours 🤙

We hope everyone has a relaxing, fun, refreshing holiday season, but most of all, we hope you get some great waves!!

If you need some last min gifts is stocked to the brim with all your surf needs including your fave board wax from , will keep your skin safe out there in the water and under the sun, has some sweet merch on the racks and boards if you’ve left it a bit late for a custom! has the best selection of meat for all your beachside bbq needs, and ofcourse has the most delish selection of beers when you want something to wash it all down with.

I’m a bit late with these pics from our last club day - OLBC Club Comp 30 Nov
We arrived at Forestry to a beautiful sunny beach with fairly small waves. There was around 16 competitors, so only a small group, but dedicated.

We walked down the beach to find a good spot and had our first heat around 9 am. The conditions were a bit messy to begin with, it was hard to find a bank, a true low tide struggle!

Some really good surfing as the day went on considering the conditions were fairly average. The day finished on a high with some really nice sets starting to come in after about midday when the tide had come in some more. The top final we had BY, Brayden, Mark, Phoebe and Posh, with Brayden taking out the top spot followed by BY and then Mark.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in the water through the summer, and then on Feb 4th for our beach BBQ and paddle race. Get those arms ready!

Our End of Year get together was an ocean of fun, right down to the N**e Conga that Posh instigated. Of course we didn’t tell him until his 3rd circuit of the room that no one else had joined in. The videos are hilarious though and can be found across all social media platforms 👀🤪 (joking!!!)

The OLBC Crew filled upstairs at the Surf LifeSaving Club. There was much humorous and/or animated conversation among all the guests like, “were those waves on the Orewa Bar that you surfed yesterday really double overhead … when it was flat everywhere out East from Sandy Bay to Takapuna?” Etc., etc.,.

Of course the main highlight was Prize Giving, including the Overall Competition places. Most of us got the highly sought-after and most desirable Club award of all, the ‘Participation’ certificates! 😄
However, a small bunch of us got the less meaningful bits of paper like:

1st in The Open: BY, with Greg in 2nd and Posh/Bryan Western in 3rd.

Women’s’ saw Fleur take 1st place, Amber take 2nd and Emily take 3rd.

Grom 1st place went to Jack Swift

U18 1st place went to Taj and 2nd to Korbyn Schedewy.

Over 40s: 1. Richard, 2. Caleb.

Over 50s: 1. Greg, 2. Rhys, 3. Mitch.

Over 60s: BY, 2. Posh, 3. Scotty.

Over 70s: 1. Brownie, 2. Chris

Finally, some of the other Club Awards…
Aloha Trophy: Greg and Jo Illing. These two have done such an amazing job over the last few years of club President and Jo in support. Thank you from all of us for everything that you are and do! They got an extra special gift this year from Steven Valiere as they hand over the reigns to our new president Mitch.
Wahine: Jo Illing
Global Travel: Natalie
Local Travel: Phil Bonham
Most Improved: Emily
Family: Swift family
Wipeout: Rachel (that was some well overhead wave about to knock you in to the middle of next week, Rach!!
Photographers award: Emily, for all the effort she puts in with the club social media (thanks for helping with words Greg/Q!)

Big thanks to Kev & the for the fine catering & service. Ditto to our sponsors including , Auckland Civil,

Club Competition 27 September 2025

Club Comp Number 4 for the 24/25 Year was being scoped a week out. It was locked and loaded one day prior on Friday 26 Sept. Forestry was the venue. The forecasts were predicting a good metre of swell, so waist to chest and easing through the day, with cross-offshore WNWers.

However, our first analyst to arrive and try to sort a contestable bank immediately noted a well over head high set hit Forestry Point, cleaning up the entire line-up sitting out on it! He instantly started writing a “please excuse him from the contest today as he is not feeling well” text to his parents so they could send it to President Greg!!

There were plenty more big sets throughout the day and at one stage an entire heat of five surfers were stuck in the impact zone just trying to get back out back! Or just trying not to submarine surf!!

Still, there was also some good riding of reasonable waves, a fine and sunny day, plenty of laughs at unplanned dismounts (the diving judges were giving out 10s!) and plenty of smiles on everyone’s faces as the carpark photo at day’s end shows. Our finals heats winners were H1: BY, runner-up Che; H2: Braydon, runner-up Posh; H3: Quin, runner-up Caleb; H4: Dave, runner-up Fleur.

It was also a pleasure to welcome our former Club Pres Michael Gray back into the fray. Michael is recovering from ankle surgery but we couldn’t let him get off that easily so we roped him into helping us judge. Good to see you, MG!!

We’ve got our AGM tomorrow folks (Wednesday 1/10), will be great to see as many of you there as possible.

And thanks as always to our sponsors And Akl Civil 🤙🤙
